Saw that Steam sale and decided to pick-up the Quake pack for 6 bucks or whatever it was. Quake 2 was like my first shooter and I loved it. Can't wait to play it again...but right now i'm playing Quake for the first time.

It's a bit easy, even on [H]ard, but I replaced the original Quake soundtrack with the Quake 2 soundtracks and i'm actually enjoying it.

It makes me think we should have some of these game companies put up retro-style shooters, with no B.S. story to speak of...just fast-paced, rocket jumping fun with updated graphics. I missed that with Doom 3 and Quake 4. I was hoping there would be that Primus-type soundtrack running with it but the games got too story-oriented.

Speaking of retro...looks like Black Mesa is gearing-up, eh? I'll finally be able to play Half-Life!

What do you think?:D

In a similar vein, I would love to see some of these old shooters re-done.
Quake1/2/3, Doom, Unreal/UT, and so on. Redone with the latest graphics, physics, and all that.

Quake 1 was the first FPS I played, and is still my favorite. The soundtrack is fantastic, imo. An updated version would be awesome.

Funny you should mention it, I've been replaying Quake for the past few days. The last time I played it was on my cousin's coal-fired Macintosh back in 1846 or whenever it was the game came out. I think neither of us were good enough to get to the boss without noclipping into the area...

Anyway it's a hell of a lot better than I remember it being. As for it not having a story, I think it actually does have a story, but it just doesn't beat the player over the head with it when what they really want to do is shoot some eldritch abominations with a giant rotary nailgun.

Between this and more Serious Sam games, hell yes I want some more good old fashioned pew pew action.

(And seriously, you never played Half-Life? If you can take Quake graphics, you can surely take HL graphics. And I honestly don't think BMS will be able to top HL's voice acting, especially the little gems like "Take me with you! I'm the one man who knows everything!")

Kids.... :) I'm not old compared to some on here, but Quake 2 as your first lay? Ouch.

I'd love to see those oldies redone, but redone right. Too many attempts at modernizing older games just turn out like shit - they are the same in name only.

I remember when I first played Quake and it had that kinda pseudo-3D and I was like, "Holy crap! The graphics are 10x better than Doom!"

Wait, you got rid of Trent Reznor's soundtrack and replaced it with Quake 2 music?

I just can't do it...seeing the same scientists walking around saying the same things. All the Barneys yappin' at you. It's hard to take it serious. I can handle the bad graphics in Quake because it's just all fun...

...and I see the purists don't like the idea of me replacing the NiN soundtrack. Most of it is just ambiance music. I just love that driving, heavy metal soundtrack of Quake 2 as I remembered it. I'm glad I was able to swap it out...so much more fun for me.

Call me super-corny....but this is just bad-ass to play quake to:

I don't know call of duty has stayed pretty retro

I too preferred Q2 soundtrack to quake 1's.

I really did enjoy the game play of Q1 but honestly I can't remember another game that gripped me like Q2.

if you goto www.quakeone.com you can download Perfect dark and use that with the regular client it's a cool port.

Personally the game desigers have it all wrong they create objects instead of making a good design. A game like Crysis every object in the game looks like something you recognize in everyday life thus making the game pretty plain by design. In Quake you have these blocks forming the levels and weird enemies that are in no way human which made it a hit plus the M-player on M-Player was a hoot.

A game that doesn't apply to these rules are games like Borderlands I and II that just makes the level design up and doesn't base it on being realistic.

I would love to play an Unreal Tournament HD version similar to how the Serious Sam HD series were updated with the modern engine, yet still felt like the same old Sam.

That would be pretty awesome.

A remake of UT99 on UE4 that is PC-exclusive would instantly restore Epic's faith in PC gaming, since the sales would be that good.

Not much interest from me. Though I did like UT 2004. UT3 had some nice changes, but was a bit disappointing.

Though I doubt I can get interest in such a game anymore.

I think there are some versions of Quake1 floating around with redone textures and whatnot. Not a true remake of the game but a decent step up, graphics wise from when we were playing software rendered or using a voodoo1 :)

Serious Sam 3 & Hard Reset are as retro as they go for newer games. Hard Reset is especially fun if you want to be nostalgic about Quake-style gameplay.

Give me a shooter with crazy fast pace, varied weapons, dodge-jumping, massive skill cap, a billion gametypes and maps on release, free ability for anyone to host servers and make mods and custom maps in a dev toolset -- aka UT2k4, but call it UT2k13. Sure, use Unreal 3 or 4 engine, but keep it colorful and in the ut99/2k4 style, not the brown washed out UT3 style.

That's what I want for multiplayer.

For single player I want more HL1 and Unreal Gold. Explore a big place and let the story be told via your exploration. Be able to get lost and mixed up and take wrong turns from time to time. That sort of thing.

Serious Sam 3 was OK but SE is a much better game. I like SS3 but could not replay it like I did the old ones as much.

Would like to see old games like Quake, Hexen, etc remade exactly like the original but with 2012 graphics.

Same monsters, same level design. Not blocky but rounded corners etc...Don't want the devs to get creative. just remake it exactly but newer.

I personally have no interest in devs using their time and resources on old games. I played them all back in the day, and I would rather have them be as they are.

I however would like to have devs spend time making newer, more interesting, up-to-date games. That statement isn't meant to invoke irony, I realize that there has been a dearth of interesting FPS's recently (with the notable exception of DX:HR, Bioshock series, and a few others.)

In any case, I can play old games any time. I'm looking forward, to the future, and hopefully less rehashing. I have a big enough problem with that with Star Wars, and other annoying Hollywood remakes.

I played Quake mostly raw and ugly. I think there was a widescreen and mouse hack with the Ultimate patch I used. Stupid ending...otherwise, great fun. On Quake 2 now with graphical improvements...

Secret level FTW!11!!!!

Was it UT99 that did so well?

Either way the first few UT games were epic... wish they would redo them on modern hardware... would be tits.

Remakes are fine, but I don't like paying for games I already have. I want new games, with new levels, done in the style that made the originals fun in the first place.

Meh, not really. I don't hate those old retro shooters, but I never really got into them either. If other people want them, more power to you, but since you asked I thought I'd answer with my "no not really" opinion :p

Wait, you got rid of Trent Reznor's soundtrack and replaced it with Quake 2 music?

Yea really. Trent's soundtrack was great.

Anyway I wasn't a fan of quake 2 because the physics were not stable for a while and changed with builds. With quake 1 if you were good you could run through crazy fast. I was never nearly as fast as the quake done quick guys but you could have some real fun running through doing rocket and grenade jumps.

Anyway some of the remakes of the old games are not bad although they do show age. I kinda liked duke forever and am looking forward to the new rise of the triad. The old game was interesting. Descent remade might be interesting as well.

I loved UT2k4's gameplay. There isn't a FPS out there that matches the speed of that game. If they could forget what they did in UT3 and make a proper sequel that would be swell.

would be cool to see another retro style shooter like quake just for nostalgia but i'd probably never play it.. grew out of those type of games a long time ago.

I absolutely despise today's FPS, so bland, boring, linear and generic gameplay. I prefer old school FPS games like Quake.

Yes! I would love to see the original Unreal world remastered - that was the game that REALLY got my into pc gaming. The maps on UT and Q3 were simply epic, they didn't need vehicles to get round just pure FPS gameplay.

I think we're due to bring these space shooters back. We've done WW1, WW2, Nam, the Golf and now Modern warfare. It's time to get rid of gravity and recoil and have some fun!

Tragically, nobody played Shattered Horizon. It was one of my favorite games before the devs messed everything up by adding new weapons, new grenades, and changing the hitscan shooting to projectile based.

I'd buy it on day 1.

Maybe someone should start an online petition.

They already made a game like this.

Duke Nukem Forever.

You hobos thought it was bad though.

mod communities have tried redoing the game, however it get canceled because of the companies trying to sue the modders for doing it.

Been waiting years for a sequel to Descent - too bad it's never going to happen. The closest thing was Shattered Horizon and that felt like moving through mud by comparison.

A modern netcode would do the game wonders - skipping / rubberbanding was a huge issue due to minimum amounts of client side prediction and the fact that players moved in three dimensions instead of the typical two.

Unfortunately Interplay is still too busy failing to bring back its old IP's like Planescape Torment, Descent, and Sacrifice :(.
