Steam Expands Beyond Games

I want titles dammit.

I'm interested, but I'm a big-time user of freeware instead of pay, so It had better be good.

I won't buy productivity software from Steam until they introduce Family Accounts, or else transferable licenses.

I can put-up with the fact that only one person at a time can play my entire game library, but once you delve into other types of software that restriction is a little too demanding.

So...are they gonna come up with categorical stores or "asiles" like the CNR store for Lindows/Linspire? They probably should since I don't think it would be a good idea for underage 20-somethings to accidentally end up in the special monkey-time application section. They could keep that in a dedicated area because we don't want Steam to get too Steamy. Monitors would get all fogged up and such.

Where the hell is episode three? Valve needs to quit dicking around with this sideshow stuff and get back to what's really important!

HL:Episode 3, Valve Linux exclusive launch title..... Sit back and watch the adoption rate.

I pick and choose some games from Steam, but depending on the game, I'd rather go through somewhere else.

I have bad luck from Steam. I bought my wife the Thief game pack and it's a hit or miss if they run at all.

If they didn't have those sales, I wouldn't even have it installed anymore, really.

Its not Steam's fault Thief runs hit or miss. The newest Thief has audio issues caused by MS fucking around with audio paths in vista and beyond (CoD 4, Bioshock, Just Cause 2 have similar issues) and the older Thiefs are OLD. I understand its frustrating, but you picked a bad example, and sorry bout your luck.

Steam just changed it ToS as well.
All that new lingo about how you don't own the software from them, you only lease it indefinitely. You can not re-sell the software. So on and so forth.

I am really starting to get away from Steam more and more and move back to physical discs. It's the only way to retain your rights as a consumer.

As for auto updating apps? If my software isn't working properly I'll find an available patch easily enough. I will NOT trade my rights for a small bit of convenience.

AFAIK, it has always been this way, with or without steam. A disc does not let you own it, it makes it so you have a license to it. I'm fairly sure some years ago, this was put to trial and the license side won out.

And now Gabe shows off the real reason he doesn't like Windows 8: He's afraid of competition from the Windows Store.

Of course he is, microsoft is in position to be block out other people's stores from being default installed or easily installed. They could monopolize and shut everyone out. Its actually scary for a lot of people since they are moving towards a hold your hand apple approach.

How is Microsoft responsible for patching some other company's games? If Steam is selling it and doesn't get really specific about what can run it (or detect hardware and operating system - something they already do) and advise the user about a possible problem then it's Steam that's wrong for trying to mooch a few dollars. At least GOG is nice enough to test something and work with developers to make sure a modern computer can run old stuffs. If they can do it, Valve, with its infinite monies can certainly pay more attention to what they're selling.

This issue gets brought up but the comparison of physical copies and digital copies with services like Steam is still not similar in regards to the license issue.

Lets say you hypothetically buy Office from Best Buy and Office from Steam. Yes in both cases you are in license agreement with Microsoft. However now with the Steam purchase you are also in a license agreement with Steam. Why is this distinction important? Best Buy no longer has anything to do with your copy of office post purchase while one purchased with Steam is still controlled by them. So now you not only enter a license agreement with the software creator but also the distributor/place of purchase.

Not all games work perfectly from GoG, either. Sometimes issues with Vista/7 DirectSound and/or older rendering methods (DirectDraw) don't play nice. With pre-Win98 games, your best bet is to install outside of Program Files when you get games from GoG, run compatibility mode and admin permission.

Only a handful of games still have issues, but neither company is perfect in that respect.

Hey! You're not supposed to make thoughtful responses to stuff!

Anyhow, I've bought lots of stuff on GoG sales and only played a few of the games I've purchased. Since none of the stuff I've bought has caused any problems at all, I refuse to believe that there are issues. REFUSE! LALALALALALALAAAAAAAAA! I'm not listening to yooooou!

Productivity software, on the other hand, is something that I can justify getting at a... "discount" so to speak. Adobe wants $2,600 for CS6 Master. Thats a joke. I fail to see how steam is going to magically fix my issue with software like that. .

So you'll pirate software that's for productive purposes and generally used to generate income? Especially now that you can pay $50/month to use it?

this is one of the things that worries me. i have 3 computers that i use EVERY DAY. my laptop, my gmaing pc, and my htpc/server (which i also game on). i am fine with having to log in to steam each time i want to play something on one of them, cuz i dont plan on playing more than one game at a time. i can very much see wanting to use multiple productivity programs at once though, and if the same problem exists for those, then there is no way in hell i will spend a dime on anything i can only use through steam on the 1 computer its logged in on.
the other problems are: ads for all manner of shit i care nothing about constantly flooding my steampage and taking away from the great gaming sales i see there now. and valve as a company stretching themselves out too much to where they go from doing one thing really well to doing a ton of things very poorly. for example, newegg used to be THE BEST place to buy computer parts. it was all they did, and they did it perfectly and with the best prices. now they have terrible prices most of the time, usually being beaten by amazon, and their service is shit. i dont want this to happen to my precious valve.

Everyone and their mom wants to have their own app store. Everyone wants to be the middle man. Screw making your own content like HL3. Steam, Windows 8 ... it's all about having the same profit margins as Apple and having that app store. Apple has the carrot and MS and Valve know it.

Owning a disc offers you no more rights. It's still a software license with an EULA. Steam has a function to turn off auto updates, as well.

Sometimes whenever I turn off auto updates, it has a good chance of actually not updating my game. Hit or miss. I still haven't figured out the "revert to previously non-broken patch" part though. ;)

Gabe's a classy fellow. Shit on Windows 8 because of the Microsoft Store then turn around and start pushing apps on Steam.

Does that changes anything?

Microsoft store would be a competitor for games against Steam before the announcement. Now its a competitor for games and other software.

His horse in this race didn't change one bit. His main business was in competition with the Windows Store before and its in competition with the Windows Store, still.

Silly, considering that if you use CS6 Master professionally, you can afford it. You can use GIMP if all you are doing is creating image macros for Reddit.

So instead of the "catastrophe" remark all he had to say is that "I don't like Windows 8 because it puts Microsoft in competition with Valve and Steam." I think most people could respect.

I like GIMP, though it sucks when I get those .psd files though.

The beginning of the Valve ecosystem. Next is music and ebooks, then email service, then a Valve mobile OS!

Also, I'm looking for a partner to help me get the Office 14 end boss co-op achievement. PM if interested.

Not sure if you think he is silly or me, but I can live with either :)

If I used CS6 professionally, I'd pay for it (although $2.6K? Seriously? I find it hard to believe that Windows, an entire OS, can cost $100 but Creative Suite needs to cost 26 times that.)

I tried GIMP. I hated it, but I understand that that is just me. And I can honestly say I've never pirated an Adobe product. Or really anything that was still purchasable (old games don't count if I can't get them any other way).

Standard CS6 certainly isn't $2.6k. More like $600. The master collection is about $2099. The point is, these are powerful tools. Not needed when dinking around removing your grannies mustache for family photos.

A decent freelanced contract will net you well over the asking price, depending on what the project entails.

Anyway, way OT now...

That was true when he maid the statement. There's no revelation with this article.

I mean people here are trying to make out this is some kind of 'gotcha' discovery that Newell is in competition with Microsoft. I mean the fact he is in competition with MS shouldn't have been news to anyone with or without them branching into general software.

now if only they'd let me change my log in from the email address i had 10 years ago with an ISP that no longer exists...

They will if you submit a ticket with:

All relevant contact info,

Proof of addresses,

Any CD keys tied to the account that you can produce a photograph of with the original media.

And you'll get your account back. Your only excuse would be laziness.

Waiiiit, you mean he runs a BUSINESS?

Microsoft has competition?!?!?!? OH SHIT! Someone call the president.

I don't want productivity applications tied to a service where I have to be logged in. Otherwise Valve need to fix the offline mode once and for all.

maybe they will have a free 2 use productivity suite, and you'll have to pay for all the bells and whistles in micro transactions :)

Autoupdating the steam way sounds horrible, no control over bandwidth, does not know to back off if you are doing something else. Updates anything any time.

That being said this could quickly become the main way linux users get legit software if steam goes to linux.

I like GIMP, though it sucks when I get those .psd files though.

Which is why proprietery formats are bad.

Owning a disc offers you no more rights. It's still a software license with an EULA. Steam has a function to turn off auto updates, as well.

And that is why I am in the process replacing all of the proprietery applications on my computers with free ones. Games, I'm a little more tolerant of because they are artistic rather than functional but I am done with user subjugating applications.

CS6 is an overpriced bloated piece of shit. It installs all sorts of background services and applications that you don't need and it answers not to you, the user, but to Adobe by phoning home to their servers.

The Windows Store doesn't sell desktop apps. Steam doesn't sell Metro apps. They exist in two different markets.

That would be awesome, as long as they kept a "buy full product" option available. There's always a lot of features of productivity software I never use, so if I could choose to only pay for those I did use, I'd be saving a bundle :) The best of both worlds.

What applications do I need or not need from CS6? What suite offers more functionality? Is Adobe spying on me? Do you think they know I pasted Chewbacca's bandolier and face onto a naked picture of Stoya?

lol productivity going free 2 work would be awesome. Want to use bold? Unlock with 2000xp or $5. Get the starter pack that includes all the basics, cut copy paste and will actually respect windows DPI setting for just 14.99 plus 40 gold.

HA maybe I should patent the idea $$:D$$
