The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

Does anyone have a primer for this game from the perspective of someone who is familiar with MMOs but never played Guild Wars? I know their website has a lot of information but I'd like a better breakdown of classes, skills, special abilities, explanation of acronyms, maybe a wiki of some sort?
I doubt you'll have a problem. Beyond the setting I think the game has more in common with MMOs than it does with the original Guild Wars. Some of the mechanics are a bit different, but really easy to figure out.

look up a YouTube channel named: Enigmius1 (not 100% sure of the name, pretty close to that). his channel on GW2 is truly awesome. mature look at the mechanics and many other aspects. very great channel. love the guy

This is the best run down I've seen floating around, it's been updated relatively recently:

Unfortunate... What would be your recommendation for a 24" for this game? IPS or TN?

Feel free to PM so that we dont hog the GW2 thread anymore....'

Back on topic:

Cant decide between Human and Norn. I like Norn better but i dont want to look so freaking....big (i play as a guy).

I may need to read this, as I'm considering getting the game with the pre-order to see how I like it. I hope I do, I never like spending money on games that I only play for a week. I've been watching videos on Elementalist gameplay, that may be what I end up doing. I remember them being fun as hell in GW1, is that general concept still there?

The smallest norn are about as big as the biggest human.

The game is so different now, it'd be hard to compare really.

I just read this part in the link someone posted earlier:

Let me give you an example:

Say there’s a Dredge army making their way out of their base. You could possibly get together with people and defeat the Dredge allowing you to push into their base, defeat their commander, rescue captured soldiers, and then even defend the base against rallying Dredge who try to retake it.

Now let’s say you either ignore or fail to kill the Dredge army, that army will then create a base in friendly territory, they’ll build walls, create siege weaponry for defense, etc. They’ll then send out bands of Dredge to sack nearby towns, they might send out a sniper to the nearby hills to kill merchants. Now it’s your job to defeat them, destroy their new base, liberate any taken towns, and even then push back to their original stronghold. This all stems from ONE single event, the Dredge army marching from their base and there are 1,600 of these events currently, all hand scripted.

On top of all of this ArenaNet has said things aren't going to just respawn 5 minutes later, events can take hours, days, weeks, and even months to be back in the same exact way you may have seen it originally. Also, this has to take into account player interaction, if no player does anything the enemy will still move on and conquer the world whether you're there or not. Events also affect other events like a chain reaction, some events can have zone wide consequences, some are triggered through player interaction with an NPC or an object in the world, weather systems, day & night cycles, etc. Nor does this take into account the different experiences you'll have playing with different profession combos making even those experiences unique due to profession synergy.

If this is really how it works, I'm sold. When I read that my heart started beating really fast and I got that "Damn that's cool!" feeling.

This is how it works. In the human starting zone there is a large irrigation pump with pipes coming out of it. I saw at least 2 separate event chains that had different lose events after them. In One the bandits tried to blow up the pipes and you had to defend it. If you lost then you had to defend the workers trying to repair the pipes. In the other the bandits were trying to poison the well and if you lost you then had to cleanse the well by killing slimes. Whats cool is you still get some exp/money even if the event fails.

Plus most of the events we have seen so far are low level ones which Areanet has said are meant to respawn quickly and be fairly straight forward so people can get the hang of whats going on. In the later zones they will be much more complex.

Really awesome. The more I read the more I like.

thanks for posting that; thats dope dude. I just kind of thought it was one event. the spider boss drops down and you kill it. end of event.. this makes it significantly cooler. and it was already cool

There are some events that are really only one "event" and gets repeated quite often (pretty typical of the lower level areas). Some are chained (and can have quite spectacular endings) while some are actually almost zone-wide larger meta events.

The one described with the dredge is one of those larger events. You'll notice that these are pointed out even when no real "event" is happening. There will be a description along the lines of "the bog is quiet..." or something like that. The end result of such an event could be a huge bog monster spawn after a series of other events. Another example is "The centaur are preparing war dogs", but no real event is actually occurring. If you stick around, there would likely be an event related to these war dogs.

The swamp event is pretty fun...gives good rewards as well. Some of my guildies that made it to higher levels, said that some of the events become quite challenging.

At least this time if it's a disaster you are only out the initial purchase and not the extra 15bucks a month.

Just getting to max level will provide more entertainment and take more time than many single player games out there. Hell getting to 30 will more than do that.

Yeah I mean as I continue to read I get more excited. although I am interested to see how end game ends up playing out

I enjoyed the swamp event quite a bit. It was pretty awesome when the giant worm boss spawned when I wasn't expecting anything like it. Definitely an "oh shit moment" when the worm came up from the ground literally just a few feet in front of where I was standing lol.

I'm pretty pumped. I always get pumped when a game is weeks away, I hate having to wait for shit.

Hell yeah man! Check out the forums, introduce yourself.

So, anyone else having connection issues? I know it's a stress test and issues are a given... but I've been able to play about three minutes out of the last hour. You'd think to stress test it they'd want people to be able to log in. :(
