The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

absolutely cannot wait for this game. hopefully it is not a bust. MMOs are a risky purchase these days

Worst case scenario you can play it like a single player game ala GW1. No monthly fee is going to be nice.

Nice part about no monthly fee: not feeling pressured to get your $x.xx/month worth of playtime in. Play as much or little as you want.

Ah thanks, sorry for skipping over your previous post.

lol np, if you do buy retail thought make sure your recieveing the Pre-purchase and not the pre-order. pre-order ones dont give nearly as many perks. If you buy it digitally from the gw2 site it will always be the pre-purchase version.

No kidding... I have 3 groups of people I want to play with all likely rolling on different servers.

All [H] members should choose one world. Or we should choose all of them, and then add eachother so we can go to a ton of different worlds? Decisions decisions.... :p

That server list isn't final is it?

It's missing a few, like Sanctum of Rall (which was named after a fan that passed away sadly before the game came out).

Damn.. now to choose a class, and research. Necro, Thief and Warrior are all near and dear.

Gates of Madness missing from that list too.

Your right. Silly of me to think data from ArenaNets website would be up to date and accurate :p

The actual list can be seen here (with the two you mentioned):

World- Server Names

Which also says the list may change before release. So who knows.

Personally I usually don't do too much pre-planning picking servers for MMO launches. Rather wait until I have more information available to me, such as server population, if/what server anyone I know is playing on, etc. than randomly picking a server beforehand. Though it's likely less important for GW2 because of guesting and shards and whatnot.

Servers will fill up. I'm in an alliance of 1000+ so getting the right server is pretty high on the list to get everyone settled in together.

There's a list posted somewhere on which communities are picking what servers (reddit, yognauts, etc.). The unofficial RP server is Tarnished Coast, so that's where I'm heading. I usually pick RP-PVP servers because I find the community is a bit more mature, though I don't partake in the RP.

A bit more mature? Every rp server I play its the opposite.

Compared to just straight PVP servers? Interesting. Guess I just get unlucky with PVP servers and get lucky with good PVP-RP ones. :p

Yeah. Most of the time it's a small handful of actual roleplayers, a ton of anti socials and trolls there to troll the roleplayers.

This. Trolls are going to be a problem on RP servers because people can transfer in from different servers to just troll. And, no monthly fee.

GW2 doesn't have "PVP servers", right? It's a WvW or some type of small groups Arena PVP setting?

That is correct. No straight PvP servers. My understanding is that it will have a huge zone for WvW and then as you said smaller arena style matches.

Four large PvP zones with keeps/control points and then competitive smaller arenas for PvP as well.

I hear you there. BWE was all that needed to compell me to upgrade my crossfire 6950's to SLI gtx 670's haha.

I HARDLY believe that this game requires something like that, if it does, screw that. You play any other games?

I can't wait to play this, but after talking with my buddy about pre-ordering last night, he was a voice of reason.

The last game i pre-ordered was Diablo 3. I think i'll wait a week to see if ANet purchased enough servers and make sure that the game is actually good lol

After all, there's no point in having a 3-day head start if the launch is going to be like diablos, where it's just staring at error screens.

What? crossfire 6950's aren't fast enough? what resolution are you running?

I was planning on playing at 2560x1440 on a single 6950. Do I really need to upgrade?

Nah. I was playing the last beta weekend on my 6950 (unlocked shades though) on my eyefinity 5760x1080 setup just fine.

the game isn't hard to run. just sounds like the beta had optimization issues for certain people.

You'll be perfectly fine. The crossfire'd 6950's ran BWE well for the most part, I didn't feel any choppiness. Especially running PvE and sPvP, you should be golden. I'm running games at 6080x1080.

In places like Divinity's Reach & Lion's Arch, a little slowdown here and there (maybe sub 30-40, I wasn't FRAPSing), but no complains overall.

During heavy WvW sessions (50+ people & siege) though, I had to tone down some of the effects to reduce the graphical lag.

I also play BF3 and I honestly just got tired of the microstutter issues I was having on CrossfireX. Sold them each for around 160~ each, and picked up a pair of gtx 670's instead, and couldn't be happier. On BF3, I was hitting 30 avg fps, and dipping down to 10-14 FPS when FRAPSing. On GTX 670 SLI, constant 60+ FPS.

How is the PvP in this game? I have purposefully ignored this game for as long as I could but now I am looking into it.

Also can anyone comment on the profession balance for Guardians and Warriors vs others. I live melee...

Everyone has melee and ranged.

Balance will be changing constantly. You can make whatever profession you want for sPvP in a matter of minutes and hop right in.

From what I've seen in the beta weekends, I expect a fairly smooth launch. Likely not Rift smooth, but somewhat close. (Rift's launch was one of the smoothest I've seen.)

I like the WvWvW pvp, I played Guardian the most in the beta weekend events, though dabbled in all the classes. Melee felt a bit rough to me, though in an organized group, it was pretty good. All classes can be set up for ranged or melee. The Thief is incredibly fun and lethal for switching between melee and ranged in mid fight.

do you all think a single GTX 670 could run this game at 2560x1440? im not sure what resolution monitor to buy....

whats your budget :p

Does anyone have a primer for this game from the perspective of someone who is familiar with MMOs but never played Guild Wars? I know their website has a lot of information but I'd like a better breakdown of classes, skills, special abilities, explanation of acronyms, maybe a wiki of some sort?
