Which kind of gamer are you?

So I had this discussion with my wife/friends this week and I was wondering how some of you are...

Do you put "yourself" into games?

I imagine I am the actual character in the game. It is a reason I can't really get into sci-fi games and such, when the main character is not a human. If it is some kind of alien/mutant/etc, I lose interest quickly. Character creation, I always try and make the character like me.

Do you not care?

My buddy can play a game, and usually is some freak looking thing or even does a female character. He doesn't mind it either way and still can play for hours on end.

I play as a female character because secretly thats how I identify myself....

Actually, I don't really mind what it is as I have a good imagination. I actually tend to get too deep into games with good storyline and go off on a tangent instead of completing objectives. And then I obsess over plot holes/armor, and then I read the fanfics... and then I realize I got too far into the game and quit playing it.

Neither,

I just play games that are fun and don't over think things.

I play as a female because I'm not gay. If I'm going to spend hours looking at my avatar, I want it to be one that is easy on the eyes.

I imagine myself to some degree, I feel it helps with immersion. In RPGs I generally try to make the decisions I would if faced in real life. (Light Side options) Of course there are exceptions to that rule.

Recently in MMO's and such, I have been creating female characters. For some reason, I always find that the models seem to look better than their male counterparts. In WoW for example, the female characters' armor is always much more proportional to their size compared to the males, who generally look much bulkier even in the same gear.

The exception to this was when I played through Skyrim as a male character. Why? Who knows, I guess I just liked to look of the male dark elf or something.

Based on that, I'd say it's not that I try to identify myself with the character I create. Rather, I just go for what I think looks the coolest (to my own eyes).

I usually play as a burly male (human, alien, or otherwise) that want some epic action (when allowed to customize a character). I view a story as if I'm reading a book but one that I have free will to control the main character's actions from a 3rd person standpoint (not necessarily from 3rd person PoV though since I enjoy FPSs, too).

Overall, I'm a right in the middle of a normal (not casual - right in the middle of casual & hardcore) gamer & a hardcore gamer with how much I play.

I usually play as a Male character (alien or Human).
But I also only play first person (except for Fable). I don't want to be controlling a character, I want to be that character. It's much more immersive for me in first person.

I don't LARP, but I do care. My character doesn't typically need to have my personality, likeness, or moral code. I do play them as they are intended, however. If I roll a Chaotic Neutral Rogue, that character will be Chaotic Neutral, and consistent.

My wife asked me why I will usually pick a female character in the game and this is what I told her.
If it is a third person game, if I have to look at an ass all day, it will be a woman's ass. Plain and simple. lol
Sometimes I will do the thing of trying to make the person look like me though, it depends on the setting.

I usually just select the default male character since i'm too lazy to make him look like me.

I've never selected a female character once in any game.

I am very manly.

The end.

I immerse myself in the game and try to feel like I share my character's perspective and experiences. Whatever character I make, I try to have it exemplify or exhibit some trait that is of myself - if its an RPG, I'll usually make dialog choices that I find personally agreeable, and use a play-style that seems logical and practical to me. Also, I always like to make female characters -- to resemble what it is in a general sense that I desire, I guess. If my character is a new person (albeit a fictional one) that I am meeting, coming to know and share the game with (in some abstract sense), why not make the character be someone lovely?

I'm an odd one. I suppose I read too much literature as a kid and didn't get out enough.

I'm not gay either which is why I don't play as a female. If I secretly wanted to be a female or transexual playing as a female would be understandable.

Here we go, pissing contest time!!

I pretend I'm a chainsaw when I'm gaming, because that's the least gay thing ever.

I'm not a moron with no imagination and I play in first person, so race/gender isn't really a big deal.

As far as RPGs are concerned, I am an immersion gamer first and foremost. I am looking for experiences and great stories and I put myself in the characters shoes and do things I would do in those situations. It doesnt matter what race the character is. However, a gender does.

Thats why I always use (if possible) male character as I am a man myself and doing above gets harder with female characters. I voluntarily choose them ONLY when I am conciously breaking the immersion mold and play the game for experimentation or just for fun.

*edit* Someone mentioned that they would prefer to stare female ass over male. Generally I would agree but that wouldnt work for me when I am in "immersion mode" because then that would feel like I am staring my OWN ass. I dont think I need to explain how creepy that is. :D

So you just enjoy looking at man-arse all day long?

It's kinda lose-lose. You're either a tranny for wanting to play as a woman or gay for staring at man-arse for long periods at a time. :p There are definitely times in games where I've thought "why did they choose this camera angle which emphasizes the dude's arse?"

Anyway, on topic. I like to be immersed in the game I'm playing, so even though I don't really get into roleplaying or anything, I do like to try and get into the mind set of the character I'm playing as. Games aren't movies to me, I don't play them to observe someone else, I actually like to feel a part of the game.

Well would you rather be a dude staring at his own arse thinking "dayum! I look good!" or a woman staring at her own arse thinking "yeah, shake that thing, you look HOT!"? :p

I wouldn't consider it a LARP either...I just think it has to be semi realistic...something I think could possibly happen to me...

Like in L.A. Noire, I like because I feel like I am the detective. If it was a woman or some such, I probably wouldn't be into that game really.

I loved Skyrim...played as a male, and felt like I was in the game, and I played it nightly. But I realized I stopped playing it as soon as I got to the whole dragon magic stuff (I did alot of side quests lol). It took me out of the game. I didn't even realize that until I stopped and thought about it.

I mean there are some games, that I don't even think about like that. Mario, Batman, Dungeon Defenders, etc....that I love.

But I know for a fact every FPS I ever play, I feel like I am that character...I immerse myself into that person in the game. I don't say "My character's agility sucks..." I say "Man my agility sucks" etc... It is weird, and its funny, to me, that alot of you don't do the same. I guess I am in the minority, when I thought I was in the majority. :p

I try to play the way the writers intend for me to play. I don't typically put much of myself into it.

I don't put myself into the game, not even games like Half Life 2, where "You are Gordan Freeman". I am just along for the ride. Except for when a game requires certain sets of skill, usually FPS then I put the try pants on.

Depends on what I'm playing but generally I role-play. Mostly because when I sit down to play a game I'm totally escaping. Pretend like nothing else in my life is involved. I'm obviously way different in my in game persona than normal. Anyone who plays with me knows Piscian in game is a totally different character.

Is Piscian in-game a suitable volunteer for dateline NBC? :D

I'm going to have to agree with this. At one point, 3 out of 4 of my WoW characters were female. Although, after a couple character changes/redesigns/whatever, and some more alts, now the only female (out of 11 85s) is my human mage (I consider her my main).

Awkward story actually, the dude that invited me to my first guild thought I was a chick. We had been playing together quite a bit due to some asshat griefing us in Duskwood way back when, and I never thought much of it as it was my first MMO/online game beyond Halo 2. Then he invited me to the guild and started referring to me as "she" and I was like "waaaaaaaaait a minute!"

Usually I don't care, but if I am given the choice between male and female I always choose male.

I'll imagine I'm the character but I don't imagine the character is me (if that makes sense). People who can only play a character just like their real life self must have really limited imaginations.

on RPGs im a bad girl, a cute one, i fuck people up, i find more amusing playing that way.

Second one I guess. I just don't care. I do whatever I feel like doing, and play whomever I feel like playing as a character.

I normally play female characters just because the pixels are more aesthetically pleasing :)p), but I don't put myself in the character. I just like playing badass chicks with a big gun or big axe.

I'm the same with being unable to get into a game with a fantastical non-human race as the player character, but not due to anything to do with suspension of disbelief. I just find running around as Dwarfs and Orcs and High/Shadow/Wood/Night/Train Station Elves to be unbearably cringe-worthy.

Though I do play as a female with all sneaky characters. Subscribing nicely to some nonsense gender stereotypes there, with big burly mêlée characters as male and nimble, graceful thief-types as female. Figure that one out, I guess.

I hate to be "that guy" that can't answer the question directly because the topic isn't relevant to his interests, but here we go. The character itself is one of the least important things I focus on because I don't "role play" as them, so I don't really care. If there was a choice between male or female, I default to male. I haven't played a game with full character customization as of yet and I'm glad I haven't. Most games I enjoyed have a designated hero, so it takes care of the pointless customization.

Even games like NHL, NCAA Football, Madden and such...I create a character that is my exact name, body type, etc...so that it feels like I am controlling me. Haha

I'm the kind of gamer that likes making people angry, nothing makes my day more than some noob calling aimbot or hacks!

As for the character.. who cares! Usually pick the dumbest looking one.
