You can have the internet when you pry it from our cold, dead hands. :D

"The Internet has grown precisely because it has not been micro-managed or owned by any government or multinational organization," Kramer told a forum sponsored by the Information Technology Industry Council. "There is no Internet central office. Its openness and decentralization are its strengths."

Each country can dictate the rules of what occurs in wires in their borders, they do not get to say what other countries can do, if that means that country needs to throw up firewalls ala China then so be it.

I'm sorry I can not respect any organization when there are entities (countries) which have permanent seats and the ability to veto what they don't like.. United my ass.

They all hate us anyways. Why the fuck are we still "in" it? I would cackle as I spat on them all and left.

So you could run gasoline up to $7 a gallon and run up the prices of all imported products and have China call in the US' loans? Wow, you planned for eveything [/sarcasm]

Hope you like your electronics to have a 2000% premium on them.

You think the UN has anything to do with international trade and market prices? Please.

They would have some power over it if the countries that trade it were in it... unfortunately for them, they are denied like all the time.

The UN is a joke. It is nothing but a forum for tin-pot dictators.

The fundamental problem is that it represents governments, not people. I do not recall electing anyone to represent me at the UN and yet they wish to levy taxes on me.

It is far past time that the UN found another source of funding.

The president has already stated he wants the gas prices to go to around $8/gal. So give it a few years and ya, I would like $7/gal gas because it will be cheaper! lol

This. Right..... HURRRRRRRRRRRR

As much as I hate it, in my perception of reality, this is 100% inevitable. None of the most powerful humans or groups of humans that have ever lived have ever really had full control over the entire globe. I know this is about the internet but to me, they're trial runs. If you can implement these kinds of controls once, the second and third time will be much easier. I mean, look at the UN and US's reach already!

I know people will say I'm wearing my tin foil (much) but today I'm crazy, couple years later (or ten), It was right. If the US is against this, it's because they're not getting the best deal in this situation (more corruption is needed...I mean persuasion). Put them at the top of the hierarchy and they'll "for" it before tomorrow morning.

Calling in the loans will not get them paid, it'll get them a big FU and a war! We (not me, our government) already threatened to default on all owed debt if the debt ceiling wasn't raised, a couple times. The only thing they're getting is an interest payment, nothing more, ever! Because it's a ponzy scheme for lack of better definition.

tl;dr - Doesn't matter if it's not today, sooner or later the elite wherever they are, want this in place, it'll happen. The internet in its current state is too informative for average humans and it must be locked down more tightly.

Disclaimer: Of course this is just my little personal opinion seating in my little chair (wearing my little tin foil hat) in my little house...lol

How would the US take control of the internet anyway? Remote access to the Masters around the world?

Why the hell did the United States create the UN in the first place? Guy who thought that up needs to be dug up and pissed on.

The UN is the abortion follow-up to the abortion that was the League of Nations. Both are utter failures for their intended purposes (transparency to other nations regarding international treaties and bring up issues between member nations to resolve, unfortunately the League of Nations failed and we got WWII, the UN is a failure and all it has to show for it is a bunch of bitching and moaning...and Russia and China just veto-ing the shit out of everything). They are both failures in the attempt at globalization. The UN can take their Small Arms Treaty and shove it, and while they're at it they can get the fuck off my lawn.

The small arms treaty already failed thanks to the NRA. They were able to take advantage of their NGO status within the UN and they scared off the politicians from moving forward with it. Thank goodness.

Wow, this is funny...I could have sworn for a moment that I landed at Free Republic by accident when this comment thread loaded up.

/fire up the Black Helicopters, boys...

If I were President, I would order the U.N. building in NYC torn down and made instead into a monument to truth, justice, liberty, freedom, and the American Way of Life.

The Halls of Justice? Where does the Batcave go? :D

Remember all the times the US government has illegally seized domains used internationally, and not given a shit? The UN is not the answer, but the US government are doing a great job of being fuckups.

This.

You can't say the internet should remain the way it is, yet it hasn't been the way it "is" since the early 2000s.

Who cares about veto power, we don't need the U.N. to hamstring us.

Checks and balances bro.

The US with total control would mean alot of bad international laws being passed by them.

PS: the US knows that if it leaves the UN, all other nations will follow and it will be chaos around the world. So in essence the US has to deal with it so the world doesn't go batshit insane.

They are willing to sign away a Constitutional Amendment, but the Internet? Hail no.

Of course neither should even be considered but the fact that our current "Administration" feels differently about the two is just plain scary.

Barry wants to give them control of our guns also, write off the Second Amendment.

That's why I am starting the Internet 2.0....I found some old dell servers on craigslist and some cat 5 I picked up at goodwill....hooking up my neighbors for free tommorrow..crossover cable until I can afford a switch....they don't know they are the only ones on my network....maybe I can get some more people hooked up before they realize it....*adjusts tinfoil hat*

I don't get it....the internet is run by a globally elected board called ICANN.

Why would anyone want to hand it over to the UN?
