The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 rumor of the day is that Bethesda is taking over development of the game. The source of the info is anonymous but, as always, it's always fun to speculate. Here's a translated quote:

To begin with: what is written below is derived from a very reliable source whom I trust, but it is not official information. Keep this in mind, please.

Sergei Grigorovich does not sell brand STALKER. STALKER game by Bethesda and published all the rights to play it. The game makes a number of platforms (console, plus a PC) on the technology of Bethesda, the studio most familiar with this technology. Perhaps Obsidian Fallout 3, or a team in Bethesda, but not the fact. It is important that the studio is not in Ukraine, it is almost 100%.

I don't even....
If it's alive and still "stalker", teh dream will live on.

That's a dissappointment. With the way Dishonored is going with pre-order exclusives etc, I don't trust Bethesda anymore. C'est la vie.

This is going to be a nightmare if it's made on the Gamebryo engine :( (assuming it's true)

Another reason to join this so you don't have to pay for it!

I think that is the ONLY way I'll play whatever polished turd Bethesda squeezes out and calls "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2"

Ok, now I see. When reading the quote above I was like "gosh I hope the game isn't as poorly written and confusing as this quote is". then I see on the post it's a google translate page.

STALKER was a great game. But I don't like how the PC build is an after-thought, console first.
(console, plus a PC)
. I'll wait for a demo to pass judgement.

I always knew Bethesda was full of stalkers. I really think Maryland should just change the name of that particular city to something like Stalthesda.

Oh yay, Bethesda is going to ruin another established franchise just like they did with Fallout!

At least that means the game engine will be better!

It'll be another Oblivion engine game with reskinned characters and only two voice actors ported from a console with a linear storyline that lacks any replay value and sends you on pointless side quests to fetch a tube of toothpaste from someone standing a mere fifteen feet away in order to gain enough favor for them to give you a key to a door that you need to go through to fetch somebody else's socks.

Come in.....don't stand there.....come in.....

That quote was really bad.
I can't tell what the guy's point was other than the fact that STALKER2 will likely be a console port.......and buggy as shit, to boot.

I don't know, the Stalker engine was pretty nice, and I think a new engine derived from it could be a better experience than the engines Bethesda makes.

I love Fallout 3 and New Vegas, I love Skyrim, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. felt so different, and I would want nothing more than to make sure it all stays that way.

It's clear Fallout 3 was heavily influenced by STALKER. But it's also clear the game was held back by the console influence. I'd hate to see a STALKER game on the bug ridden Gamebryo engine. A true STALKER game would make no concessions to the insidious consoles. The more I think about it,the less I like it.I can see it now,we'll pay full price for half a game, then pay again for the rest of it parceled out as weak DLC's. You want a real STALKER game, wait for the Lost Alpha mod to be released in September.

Still boggles my mind how a perfectly viable franchise with a devoted (if niche) following could go from actively in-development to D.O.A the way STALKER 2 did...

Why does everyone assume it'll be on Gamebryo? Bethsoft owns ID, too, could be the Rage engine.

I didn't make anyone feel better, did I?

This was a old rumor some months ago .. but was refused by Bethesda in twitter with an ambiguous message ... no comment or something like this .

Ugh. The only thing worse than a good series getting canned is a good series taken over by a crappy publisher, designed for the lowest common denominator, and pumped full of crappy overpriced DLC.

Can't we just let it rest in piece? Maybe make some new IP sometime instead of ressurrecting a name from the dead, only to slaughter it so you can sell a million copies to every xbox and playstation kiddie out there?

It could be on the greatest engine of all time, it would still be a horrible misinterpretation of what STALKER was meant to be. They would make an EPIC storyline, and you would be the CHOSEN ONE of every faction. In the zone, a great hero rises. He is... the Mutantborn!! *bombastic orchestral music followed by countlessly spawning mutant dragons

Sorry , but if this is a new rumor and if the source is Sergey Galyonkin , is a reliable source because is the marketing manager of 1C in Ucranie , is a men of the industry

really? Fallout was quite dead before the Fallout 3 revival. It actually introduced the OLD games to many new gamers.

I've never played any of Bethesda's creations.

That being said, all this talk of there being a console version is disconcerting.

Anything made to coexist on the console is inevitably going to suck.

I liked the original three games (I even enjoyed Clear Sky), but if its going to be consolified then I'm out.

You want a real STALKER game, wait for the Lost Alpha mod to be released in September.

More info please?

If I see any traces of Gamebryo engine/Creation Engine/whatever the hell they want to call it I will avoid it like the plague.

I had no problems with the Xray engine. I was particularly impressed by how well it handled large open outdoor spaces without slowing down too much.

Only downside - for me - was the difficulty in getting any real antialiasing to work in it.

This doesn't bother me. Just like with all of Bethesda's games, I couldn't play any of the STALKER games without mods. As long as it has mod tools for modders to use then I don't have a problem with them taking over the franchise.

By making a game that wasn't at all what the original creators envisioned? Most of us wanted Van Buren. Bethesda adds too much of their own flavour to IPs they didn't create. Unfortunately, their flavour is bland.

The joy of playing S.T.AL.K.E.R. games is that they're different than the generic, repetitive Western games that've been rehashed thousands of times. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has a different atmosphere and mythology/fantasy, it feels different than other games.

I just can't imagine a group of developers outside the Ukraine getting it quite right, even if technically they end up making a good game. The fact that this rumour is saying Bethesda have it is really depressing, there is little glimmer of hope that it might end up being good and 'right.' It'd be more respectful just to leave it alone and let the franchise stay dead.

I think you guys are overreacting to this. First, it is just a rumor and second, if they are going to start development now, it will probably be released sometime on the second half of next year, which may make it a release title for the next generation Xbox and this means it will be a DX 11 and run great on the PC as well.

It's not the hardware limitations of consoles that concern me. I've played many fantastic graphically limited games.

It's the fact the console games tend to be dumbed down and limited to appeal more to the consoles semi-retarded user base.

I disagree that Fallout 3 was heavily influenced by STALKER.

I would say that Fallout 3 was heavily influenced by The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (which was out 1 year before STALKER) and Fallout 2 from year 1998.

Since the developer’s of STALKER clearly got most of their ideas from earlier games such as The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, it makes sense for Bethesda to have a go at improving it. I would expect such improvements to be around the character representation. Perhaps they can put some voice dialog to them.
