LOL Opteron 248 (for keychain?) $3.99 @ Newgg clearance/refurbed

In for 2, $8.54 shipped with Shoprunner. I don't even know what I'm doing with them since I don't have a socket 940 motherboard, but at the very least I can practice IHS removal on these, and then turn them into keychains :p

That is a fantastic price if someone needed one of these. Sometimes, a machine is just doing its job and needs to be a bit faster for whatever it is doing. :) I do not have a Socket 940 board myself though.

cut off the IHS and drill a hole in the corner.. bingo!

Makes sense. I'm not sure how high end this was before but it could give an old system a little more life.

Myself I'd get it for a key chain though :).

HA! This would be cool for some Christmas decorations or something.

I had a buddy in Texas several years ago that bought a bunch of old, outdated RAM for like $.50 a piece, punched a hole in the top, slipped a key ring thru it and sold them on Ebay for $5.99. Claimed he sold over 1000 of them! Dont know if he actually did but I wouldnt be surprised.

You could make keychains with these and sell them for $9.99. LOL! Maybe I could finally quit one of my jobs. :D

I think I've found an even better deal from geeks.com:

Opteron 248 HE (55 W, low wattage keychain) - $3.99

I still have 4 of these Iwill ZMAX-DP Dual 940 Opteron systems:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856101809

They were decent mini-workstations for a brief period of time until the Core 2 Quad (Q6600 specifically) came out and outperformed it in every possible metric. Most importantly, in terms of heat and noise. The ZMAX-DP's were as loud as some of the old 1U servers.

I also need a ZMAXDP or ZMAXD2. Working or not. PM me please.

I kind of want one of these, but then I'd convince myself to buy the other parts necessary to make a server with them. Silly, I know.

I remember when this was beast.... haha

I remember Sledgehammer being all over the news when AMD was crushing Intel. Then after that the X2's. Must have been a couple years where I refused to recommend Intel under any circumstance except centrino.

In for 3! 2 for my Tyan DP board which may or may not work (part of a surplus server buy) even assuming you can run a board without the 6-pin (not PCIe) power connector, and a third for decorative fun.

I still have an Opteron 165 skt 939 still running...

My son is still running the Opty 165. Still going strong. A year ago before I swapped for the Opty, he used to run a 3000 Venice. Times have changed. :p

Ahh, I don't remember these.

They are too new for me.

I was a major hardware geek from ~1991 to ~2003 and then took a 6 year break.

I was still running on my Socket 754 Athlon 64 and GeForce 6800GT in summer of 2009, when I was unwittingly sucked into the hardware addiction again :p

Tempted to buy one. I have my free shoprunner account to get it shipped at that price.

Got an S939 Opteron 185 running in my HTPC still. About a year ago, these were still going for almost $300 ...not sure what they are now.

i'm tampted for it to be used as keychain. still i think it'll be better if thing plate is used to make tight square around it's edges and than put keychain on it. rather than drilling

I wonder if the Gold on the pins is worth more than $3.99?

I'm tempted, I still have a Tyan K8WE and 246 from the AMD Tech Tour... I think it's in my attic somewhere.

If anyone has a AMD Opteron 1356 for my T105 server, I would rather buy it than have it made into a keychain...

Let me guess, Got married?

:D

that's what it was for me. 4 years later my desktop went out and I logged back into hardforum.

Almost, met my to be wife and got engaged. :p

Didn't get married until after I rediscovered my hardware addiction though :p

I'm glad I'm not alone in this. :p

Just got mine! For those of you looking for nostalgia/actual use, note: These aren't Sledgehammer's as Newegg says, they're actually Troy (90 nm) parts. Not complaining mind you, if my board works, I like the extra SSE3 capability and DDR 400 support.

Also: Packaging is pretty shoddy. If you want to actually use these, add something that requires a box. I thankfully did...they came in the standard newegg mailer bag in antistatic sleeves with just a small piece of styrofoam filler protecting the pins.

I've got work to do tonight! :D
