Dell PowerEdge 32 Xeon Cores 64GB RAM, 4 servers in 1 - $1199

They have been selling these for awhile. I would totally get one if there was a SB/ IB or SB-E upgrade path AND they were 6x 2.5" slots per system. That would give a nice upgrade path. Those are Core 2 Duo generation chips so 2.5GHz of C2D != 2.5GHz of Sandy/ Ivy Bridge.

I do wonder how much those things consume power wise.

Good server to load up with 512GB SSDs, 64GB of total RAM, add a couple CPUs, and use for free version of ESXi (that way you can run multiple servers by VM).

Pretty sure you can still buy a warranty on them if you decide to spend the cash.

Its 4x 8 core systems, that's a lot of money to do smp. I'd run from it.

No, it's really four two socket blade systems. The CPU's in question, the L5420, is a four core non-HT processor. So... each sub-system has eight cores for 32 totals cores combined. I don't know if there's any kind of QPI or Infiniband between the "blades"; but you could theoretically combine them all together with VMWare.

Interestingly enough, those processors don't sell for shit on eBay. Glad I'm not off-loading any of those suckers!

BTW, if someone were really tempted by this, I would suggest searching eBay for that CPU and you'll find lots of similar servers for sale.

For those that are seriously contemplating this (never know), it is known as the PowerEdge C6100.

If density in not of a concern you can pick up any number of 1U dual L5420 servers w/ 16GB & 4 SATA II bays on eBay for between $200-250 a each.

Yes, pretty much *any* name brand 1U or 2U server is going to be loud. I think that's pretty well known.
Some are pretty quiet actually. Most of the newer Dell and HP 1-2U servers have surprised me for how quiet they are

To this day, I'm still pimping out Conroe/Merom to friends as a good platform (recommending, not offloading my old goods).

Have had seriously mixed results with 1/2/3U servers here at work. A custom firmware finally fixed the most obnoxious of the bunch (the 3U); but the current Intel & Dell 2U systems are usually dead quiet even under full load. Have a 3U at home that I wound up removing half the fans from... which reminds me... need to order better fans. :p

You can buy 4 1u off lease dual L5420 machines for less on ebay.

If you did ever want to colo them though, this would be less expensive since you need less rack space and probably save a bit on power due to fewer large fans.
