OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) Thread

Well, I'll preface this by saying that I just did a clean install on a new Vertex 4 SSD but...

Mountain Lion is FAST.

I'm still running SL. I didn't want to make the move to Lion, back when it released, because I heard some people (with the same MBP as me) complain about performance. I've since upgraded my memory from 2 to 4 GB, but I think my particular laptop is part of the oldest set of MBPs that meet the requirements for the upgrade to ML. I might wait and see what others, with this particular computer, experience after they've upgraded.

I advise you to upgrade. I've installed it and used it on every iteration of the macbook from 2009 to current and it's well worth it. If you have any other iDevices there should be no questions.

subd to this thread, cant wait to install it on the mbpro in my sig

the arstechnica artilce in the last paragraph quotes a "revamped graphics subsystem" anyone know what that means?

Poking around so far and about 20% of my apps don't work. Luckily I'm in the mood to delete stuff I don't use all that much, happy to ditch growl - not so happy about ditching Onyx but it looks like they are still around so an update will come hopefully. Shocked to find out Perian is no longer being updated. Still getting the hang of things, had to change the way two finger up/down scrolling worked and allow applications from "anywhere" to get a few things working.

openCL and openGL

I didn't install Perian when I started using Lion and I haven't missed it yet. One benefit, though, is that they'll release the source code if people do want to continue development. Who knows, someone might make a rival to VLC player that looks more fitting on a Mac.

I think I'm the only person in the world not interested in this update. I'll be buying a copy for my classroom (Mac Pro) but not for my personal laptop.

You only have to buy it once per Apple ID, so if you share the same iTunes account at both places, you'll be able to install it on both Macs if you want.

Just upgraded (I skipped Lion), and it seems faster so far. But I miss spaces. I've played with it enough to get Mission Control to "almost" do what I want it to, but not yet.

I miss having a single space that had my Email, To-Do-List, Calendar and Notepad all perma-pinned to their respective corners (so if I needed any of them, I could flick to the upper-right corner, and be on that space in a split-second)

Also, WTF is up with Calendar being too wide to be efficiently pinned to a corner. The old iCal app would resize to fit into a corner, the new one is ~10% too long to be in a corner, and so overlaps anything I attempt to pin to the other corner. Very annoying.

It's ridiculous how your redemption isn't instantaneous. If you enter a valid serial number, the site should provide a code immediately.

I assume everything is being manually checked to prevent people from copying serials from boxes at the store and getting free copies of the OS.

Whatever, I just better get it tomorrow, which is my last day to return my MacBook if ML doesn't wow me.

I'm kind of disappointed that you can't Airplay Mirror your desktop. It only works from compatible applications.

Downloading now.

How the hell do I save the img file so I don't have to re-download it? Same way as for SL?

downloading now. will update and maybe do a clean install later.

Brilliant. The installer says my startup disk can't be used to start the computer.

Mountain Lion doesn't like external monitors in portrait mode. I have a latest gen 27" iMac with a Dell U2412M hooked up with a mini displayport cable. The image on the external monitor stutters badly when swiping between desktops. Landscape mode is fine. I didn't have this problem with Lion.

For a test, I used a Time Macine backup to go back to Lion and the problem went away. Re-installed ML again and the problem returned.

Very annoying problem.

I agree. It's now been 8 hours, and I'm still without my redemption code. Is there a legitimate way to grab ML aside from the app store?

I suspect you could just grab the DMG. Considering that's how you do clean installs, I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

My understanding is that the app store is the only "legitimate" way that the OS is being offered for this release. So, hurry up and wait... or time to get scandalous ;-)

Anybody have any luck with messages syncing with their iPhones? Nothing shows up for me. I also never had messages really sync to my iPad. It's like it only does messages that originate from that device. I was under the impression that it was just a persistent sync of everything all the time, like reminders or mail.

It's worked fine for me since the beta.

I have sync between my iPad and iPhone 4S.

I think I figured it out. In the messages setting I had both my @gmail and @me addresses listed. My AppleID is @gmail and thats what I had chosen as callerID on all devices. But once I removed the @me as an address to receive at, it started to sync. It makes no sense to me how that caused the problem but it looks like it did. Serious flaw if thats the case. Why even have the option to add multiple addresses???

Apple finally has a usable browser in Safari 6. Chrome's still quicker and has a better selection of shortcuts, but Safari's scrolling is all kinds of wonderful.

Installed...seems that battery performance has decreased.

Be sure to drain your battery and then recharge. I don't think an upgrade install from Lion retains your battery life history.

o_O I was always told that "draining Lithium batteries damages them and will permanently decrease battery life" is this no longer true?

(of course on the other paw, I have full Applecare which I assume includes battery replacement if it gets bad enough, so........)
