USB only power strip? How come nobody makes one?

Now that almost every gadget is charged by a USB connection, why aren't there USB only power strips? I think I saw a 4 port strip on thinkgeek, but it looks like it's powered off a USB connection itself. What I would like is something that can provide 2A to 5 or 6 USB ports so it can accommodate pretty much any device you want to charge.

Anyone seen something like this?

I'm 27643836% with you. My gut is telling me that it's time to build one. My main gripe is all we want to charge is our (insert flame war comment) Apple gear and I'd like to use our chargers for travel use. Bad news is from my research that the/our Apple gear has some pretty specific circuitry to charge effectively.

Why Apple hasn't or heck, even an Andriod mfg, made something like this is beyond me, seems to make sense.....don't people have 2 USB powered devices nowadays? Or do I need to go back to my cave?

So you just want a 7-port powered USB hub. Not that hard to find.

We did some experimenting (see the video up top) and determined that in fact the different voltages/resistances did effect the charging rates! Using the 2.8V&2.0V setup resulted in a 1 Amp charge rate and the 2.0V&2.0V setup resulted in a 500mA charge rate.

The standard for USB battery charging is to connect D+ and D- together. I'm fairly sure apple devices will charge in that configuration though i'm not sure if they will do it at full speed.

I'd allow an amp per device, so if you want 5 charging sockets you want a 5A PSU to run it.

as enginurd said.. You want a powered usb hub.. I have that is velcro taped to the bottom of my desk..

If its a powered hub & you dont connect the USB port back to the PC then you have exactly what you are looking for..

Edit: this is the one I am using & my phone is currently charging without the hub connected to the PC..
