Eight Rotor RC Copter Used For Movies?

As the demo reel below shows, this eight rotor RC copter can take some pretty damn impressive shots. It's probably a lot cheaper to use this thing for aerial shots than current methods of filming. Thanks C. to Marc for the link.

This could definitely make for some interesting shots in future films where it's unsafe to bring a helicopter to close to the actors (or close enough for the rotors to blow stuff around). I can see this being great for car chase scenes where a car goes off the cliff and the camera could follow it down in ways that were not possible before.

If it has eight rotors, does that make it an octorotor AND does this mean someone needs to find a dead, eight-legged cat to fly around their backyard so they can keep up with the Jones?

That is pretty cool. Now mount a machine gun on it. Or a couple Hellfire missiles...

I'm impressed by how minimal the shift in direction affects the camera. Equip that sucker with 3D camera & Kinect tech and you've got a sure winner.

this cant be used for movies in till they equip it whit the shaky camera tech, but that thign is realy realy cool and i want one

to bad this is illegal to use in the US lol
untill the NPRA in Oct.

on and it may STILL be illegal after that
as it would be classed as an sUAS and would if what we hear from the FAA is turn would need an airworthiness cert for commercial use

these guys used to fly under the rules for models but the FAA didnt like that

here is the site i was looking for

Here are the people whom have decided to stop all “commercial use” of an RC HELICOPTER or RC AIRCRAFT from flight anywhere in the USA, at any altitude. Does not matter we maybe in a controlled space, on a film location set for a movie, flying at 40 feet above the grown, no where near an airport, NO FLIGHT OF ANY TYPE ANY WHERE, is the answer we got.

First thing that came to mind was mount an airsoft gun. If that thing's strong enough to carry a high definition camera, it's strong enough to carry a gearbox, ammo, battery pack and targeting camera.

i want one, thats so cool and cheap...er than using an helicopter :D

There's a new quad-rotor one out that is $299. It comes with a 720p camera and is controlled via your phones wifi (complete with video image) for both movement and recording.

Saw it advertised on YouTube.

Wow that could save film makers so much money. Just to rent a chopper and pay for its fuel/pilot is at least a few hundred thousand for a whole day. You could buy an army of these for all kinds of shots and never approach that number.

The big question is though is what is the failure rate of those motors? I can't imagine many film makers being willing to ruin a $30,000 rig when one of those things takes a nose dive. If it has fail safes for landing in emergencies than it'll be amazing to see what someone like Danny Boyle could do with it.

For aerial photography a much better than the A.R. Drone is the QuadShot: http://thequadshot.com/

A electric multicopter, especially one in the circular configuration like the 8 rotor system pictured is actually extremely reliable with respect to hardware failures. Not only are the hardware failures uncommon, but multiple rotors can fail before the system becomes uncontrollable.

I figured Steve would like this use better:

FPV Drift

His Golden and Bali is great stuff for FPV Videos. Get bored try searching for FPV Cancun or FPV Everglades. He's got some great stuff too....

Since when where movies filmed with flip cams? GL mounting a real camera to this...?
Flip cams? This is a top of the line Canon EOS, probably EOS 5D Mark II or III.
Full crisp 1080 HD 24 megapixels, most HD movie cameras don't even match this, at 10 times the price, the weight or battery requirements, or more.
A whole episode of House was filmed with an EOS last year. I believe it was the final episode of the season.

The definition and clarity of the pictures was amazing, so was the smoothness and fluidity of the camera movements, they must have some gyro sensors to keep it all level regardless of the speed and direction or elevation changes.

Definitely want one!

That was really cool, but I'd have liked to have seen some ground hugging obstacle dodging footage.
