Can an [H]'er give me a quick summary of what exactly this game is, and what's so amazing about it?

It's a hard core survival game where you spawn with nothing. Zombies spawn near buildings and if they hear or see you, they will fuck you up if you do not have a weapon to defend yourself. You use stealth and tactics to evade them and find gear and supplies.
Then throw in 60 other people in the same server as you, with guns, who might shoot you to steal your stuff, and it gets interesting fast. You can find increasingly powerful weapons and equipment to help you along the way, but remember that one mistake or being caught out of position once can mean instant death.
The game environment is ~25km by ~25km, so it's a huge environment. Your character's location and equipment is saved on a central database server, so no matter what server you join you will spawn in the same place as you last disconnected.
Basically it's a survival sandbox and can be both extremely challenging and extremely rewarding.

Thank you. I'm sold. Wondering if I should wait and see if ARMA II:CO get's any cheaper and if I should just bite now....
If you like games that punish incompetence and require you to use tactics and thinking to succeed you'll really like it.

It's actually 225 x 225 kilometers. Pretty big difference there...
Chernarus is 225 km2 in size
So is it really better to buy Arma II Co from someplace besides steam? Saw that mentioned a few times.
Steam version works fine for me with Six Launcher. Don't even need to have Steam running after installing ARMA 2.
Nice. So is the game playable right now. I saw some rumbling of bad bugs from last patch...
Yes, it is definitely playable. At some point in time, you'll likely die due to a bug (most likely, several times) but that doesn't mean you won't have plenty of fun prior and after the death. Plus, the devs are very active with patching the game and do pay attention to their community.
Patch 1.7.2.3 was just released so it is hard to know if it is good or not. Going by the release thread, it seems fine after the PlayerID stuff got updated.
Are there any [H] groups or anything? Seems like a fun game to play with a group.
I'll be hammered on US91 with 4-5 people if anyone wants to join.
Thinking about checking this out but not sure if my rig can handle it. Will I have to turn view distances and stuff way down to play? Rig in Signature

So I read ARMA 3 is due out by the end of this year?
What is the difference between an expert server and a veteran server that has crosshair, chat, and 3rd person off?
Expert also removes all HUD markers, like for the squad leader and waypoints, and it removes VoN ID and the scoreboard.
For DayZ not much of that is probably important, though.
Careful sticking weapons in your backpack. I tried to put my AKM in there so I could have a weapon ready for my buddy, and it vanished.
That left me with a G17 and a crossbow I found in a barn. Not exactly a good trade!
I also picked up the PMC and British DLC so I could have the hi-res player models. Combined with me not being a moron (I finally noticed the advanced tab under graphics), the game is looking a lot better!
I honestly think if they allowed private servers and possibly localized persistent databases, it would be a LOT easier to get into this game.
