What is a good price on 3 TB nowadays? I am looking to spruce up my video storage, and I think 3 TB makes the most sense.

Newegg has a deal for $150 which Amazon matches. I seem to recall seeing those before, but has anyone seen lower? Not necessarily talking about today, but wondering if that is the lowest yet/post Tsunami or if it isn't "really" on sale.

I bought 2 of the drives you are talking about today. I need the drives desparately and I can't wait anymore.

Think this would be better in the Hot Deals Discussion area. IIRC around $150 sounds about right. And, seriously, that price would also be about right if this were early October, 2011. JMHO.

i think costco is going to have them for 100 dollars next week

amazon had it for 90 dollars today but sold out way too fast

what drive?

my costco carries the new model goflex desk drives with usb3. the old model was usb2. normal price for a few months has been $140-10 instant rebate at checkout, so $130. i think in the ad this month i saw that they would be $20 instant so $120 out the door. OP, i would say anything under $130 is a "good deal" for a seagate, about $10 more for the WD.

I got a couple of the Seagate 3TB externals back in November - one for $110 from Amazon and one from Staples for about the same with a $25 off coupon. $130 seems like a decent enough price right now.

I'll need to keep an eye on Costco then. How did you hear about this? Rumormill?

I'm out of backup drive space and need another one.

For those curious about prices pre-flood. Not quite there:

Lowest: Sept 2011 --> $123

^^ That's the NewEgg one mentioned in the OP.

I just found this site, pretty awesome. Just plug in a product and it'll give you a historical outlook of the pricing.

Which disk will they have for $100??? I'm about to buy a bunch of 3tb disks.

its probably the seagate goflex desk i mentioned in my post. great external IMO. i dont think they carry any other 3tb drives any more. 2yr warranty, cant take it out of the enclosure without breaking the enclosure, has cool lights that tell you available space, detachable base, usb3 with separate power cord.

Theoretically you can take it out and not break the enclosure as i've seen a vid of it, though i did break ~3 tabs on my first go round.

That said the go flex desk drives have a 7200rpm drive and when i checked the serial on seagates website the bare drive also carried a warranty.

Currently i think these are the best value for a 3tb. You can also reuse the enclosure for a smaller drive if you need a portable HD. Confirmed that it worked with an older maxtor drive.

I did the "scavenge from externals" thing a few years back. I greatly underestimated how annoying it is to have a big pile of empty enclosures hanging around. Ditch the enclosures and you lose the warranty. I promised myself I'd never do that again.

Do Seagate drives still blow?

I'm debating buying one of the externals and getting the bare drive. WD jacked the external price up.

yeah i tried it on the first one i got but i kept marring the plastic from prying on it and i couldnt get the sides to separate after i got the middle piece out. i was sure i was gonna break it. really i was just doing it to see if i could, dont really mind the enclosure. so theyre all 7200rpm drives? i didnt know that, i assumed they were green drives. also didnt think the bare drive would have a warranty. also 2 years? thanks for the info.

All the reports i have seen have indicated 7200rpm drives and that's what was in mine. Not sure if all of the bare drives have warranties, i believe i have seen conflicting reports on this but not sure if it was all the same model external they were talking about. The warranty on my bare drive was 2 years.

did you check your bare drive serial on seagates website?

well i just checked my costco and the 3tb goflex desk went up from $130 to $140. :/

Even though it's a dirty place - check out walmart. I've seen Seagate 3TB goflex drives for $129.

Yeah you will pay tax but it's still an okay deal.

And I can vouch that you CAN take those external eclosures apart without damaging them. Just need one of those all plastic non marring plastic flat picks that are generally used to take phones apart. Going slow and steady is the key. Soon as you get in a rush you start breaking clips.

I have about 9TB so far -- thinking about picking up another here soon. because I've been going on a 1080p MKV spree via bit torrent :)

They have Linux distros in 1080P now?

The one linked by someone up above goes to a 1TB Seagate external. So it may have just been pulled for a listing error and not sold out.
