Here's what I plan on throwing in it. Some of these parts I have lying around.

Intel S1200KP Server Board
Pentium G860 3.0GHz Sandy Bridge
8GB DDR3-1333
ASUS PCE-N15 MIMO n
Intel 320 160GB SSD
160GB + 320GB HDDs

not so far...the BIOS is a very vanilla UEFI... looks and feels like the AMI BIOS but different if that makes sense...as soon as I dig up a spare hard drive I am going to load windows and put it thru the paces :)

just waiting on that and a new PSU... I'll be sure to post up a thread with pics soon

Hi - I've built ATX tower systems before but, as computers proliferate, I want to go small. Maybe I'll eventually end up with a home rack but for now I have my eyes on mini-ITX.

Have spec-ed out the following system:

Intel Core i5-3450S
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116507
ASUS P8H61-I (REV 3.0) LGA 1155
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131727
APEX MI-008 Black Steel Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case 250W Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811154091
Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EARX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136939
and 4, maybe 8, GB of memory

I wanted the system Intel or AMD driven for software compatibility and relatively performant. Want to load Linux on it (probably Ubuntu) and Ivy Bridge does seem to be compatible.

So my questions are

  1. Is 250W enough?
  2. What kind of cpu fan will fit?

On the 250W, I've identified relatively low power parts in the form of the S 65W processor as well as a low power hard drive.

I imagine I need a low profile fan. The only one I've found so far on newegg that's compatible with LGA 1155 is the following:

Xigmatek CAC-D9HH4-U02 PRAETON LD964 Low profile HDT CPU Cooler
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233103

Advice appreciated.

250W should be enough (unless it's some sort of 30% efficiency PSU) ... one of my systems with slightly overclocked 65W CPU, AMD 4670, 2 sticks of RAM, 4 spinning drives and 4 120mm fans eats125W at the wall when stressing the CPU.

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 SFF as a server does that count lol :D?

Specs:
Core 2 Duo E7200 2.53ghz
4 x 2GB Hynix DDR2 800mhz
Seagate Barracuda 160GB 7200rpm
DVD ROM drive
XFX 8400gs 256mb passive cooled

I just finished a my workhorse/file-server build!
Lian-Li Q25B
Asus P8H77-I
Intel i5 3450 Ivy Bridge
Startech PEXSAT34 Sata3 PCI-E card
Samsung 2x4GB 30NM memory (extremely low profile! Also rated very highly!)
1x Crucial M4 64GB SSD boot/NZB temp download drive
2x Seagate 3TB archive drives
Random other old Sata2 drives will fill up the hotswap bays
eSata bracket.
Silverstone Strider Plus 500W ST50F-P with short cable kit.

I chose that PCI-E card and motherboard specifically to maximize my internal and port multiplier capable esata ports. It is very unclear if the chipset provided esata ports on most motherboards supported port multiplier, so I just went with the 6 sata port ASUS, and grabbed a card which advertises port multiplier, and used the built in esata port, as well as providing another via a bracket. I still can fit 7x3.5 and 1x2.5 internal (more 2.5" easily if I didn't want them bolted down), with massive expandability possibilities using 5xsata port multiplier cases (over 6Gbps esata as well!).

I used 8" startech left angle sata cables for the 5 hot swap plugs, as well as the seagate on the bottom right, and a 12" startech left angle sata cable for the seagate on the bottom left. SSD is on the stock cable.

Sorry for the low quality camera phone pictures. I more wanted to post this block of text to help out any others wanting to make an expandable, space maximizing file server!

This is pretty old school compared to what you guys all have, but its still running.

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/nuzzo_atari_rig

It was featured as Maximum PC's Rig of the Month for July 2007. We built it in 2006 for about $400 (including tools and materials)... this was back before you could buy an ITX motherboard from NewEgg that actually supported a desktop Intel or AMD CPU. It took forever to find something faster than a Via C7, and a P4 2.4Ghz Northwood was the best performance\heat ratio we could get.

That is crazy how many drives you have in there!!! How are the temps of those bottoms drives?

Any idea"s which is the best cpu cooler for the SilverStone SG02F ?
Spec"s on signature. Now running one stock from 1050T and some times is like
landing 747 in the bedroom.

Probably because the cpu cooler has no way to push the air OUT / over the heat sink AND because its pulling the hot air from the psu and pushing it into the cpu cooler

Why not make a deflector and have it pull air in from the side of the case ? or something....

ehh dont think the small fan from the cpu to pull air vs the fan of the psu.
After all the psu suck the air from inside and push it out.
Your opinion for deflector it was very heplfull and im thinking smt (if it works).
I was thinking to switch side the psu (fan above) but the SilverStone dont have holes to switch it.
The bad news? I was already make the holes in the cover....... >.<

waste of a good dreamcast... just kidding!

That's awesome, the fact that you use the stock optical bay and it's fully functional is A+ in my book, keep up the great work!

Haha! I just couldn't bring myself to destroy a working dremcast so I made sure I bought one that was fried. The one I found was only showing a black screen. The guy I bought it from asked me if I was going to try to fix it. He looked pretty surprised when I told him I was going to gut it and turn it into a media centre / gaming PC.

Haha that's awesome!

I would've put a comical "no dreamcasts were harmed in the creation of this htpc" lol.

Anyways, again, great work!

4 year old gaming machine so specs are not that greats, but i got this new case for cheap and it looks good. :)

have any more details on the build? i was thinking of doing something like this

pretty standard build.. parts list in sig. storage is 4 x 128gb ssd boot and 2 x 2tb drives for secondary storage. So much quieter and cooler than my nuclear dual 295 setup.

I've gotten myself a desktop again, after 8 months with only a MacBook Pro 15".

It's a Shuttle SZ77R5, with an Intel Core i5-3470, Corsair XMS3 1600mhz 2x8GB, EVGA GTX670 (reference-cooler), Samsung 830 256GB SSD and a WD GreenPower 2TB drive for storage!
I have also ordered a Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 wireless network-card with some cables to put antennas on the rear of the case.

I guess that happened when the something crashed when i posted, I love it already! Had it since 4th of december! :)
Why waste so much space with an ATX setup, when you're only going to have one graphics card? :)
