Newegg is a wasteland

How the mighty have fallen.

Back in the day I used to advertise for them by word-of-mouth religiously... shop at newegg, shop at newegg, shop at newegg.

Now, I can't in good faith really send anyone their way.

Here's an issue I had recently with Newegg.com and frankly has led me to look elsewhere for my build needs.

I saw that they had an incredible deal on a Corsair 128G SSD. Was like 89.95 or something like that. Got the deal through an email blast. When I went to the site, the promo code didnt work. Nowhere on the site did it say anything about a limited time or quantity. Saw it at 8AM Central time. Sent an email to complain that the promo code didnt work. After about 3 eamils either way, they said that the promo code was working now and to go get it. Tried to go get it and the site then said it was sold out.. Wrote another email and complained about the fact that if the promo code had worked when it was supposed to that I would have gotten the SSD. Never heard back from them.

Imdy.

Here is one thing I hate. You know those deals where you have to add it to the shopping cart to see the price? Well, NewEgg has taken it to a whole new level. You have to add it to the shopping cart and you still do not see the price. You have to provide your credit card details now as well.

And how much you want to bet that if you accidentally order it and contact them they'll say it's too late to cancel it?

I agree what with others have said about their sorting/filtering functionality though, it's best anywhere. For the juggernaut Amazon is, if you don't know what you're looking for the experience is maddening. I was helping my mom look for a new cordless phone the other day based on some requirements she had given me. After not finding anything that matched them after over half an hour of searching, I came across a phone that fit perfectly in a "Customers who have looked at this product have also looked at" list. Somehow it had never appeared in my searches/browsing despite the fact that I had looked at *all* the phones of that particular brand.

Agreed. Just searching for a not so incredibly popular item on Amazon is often a long process. All the sub stores or retailers make regular search functions not strong enough. My single biggest beef with Amazon is their search engine , not up to par for how massive they are.

But Amazon beats Newegg everywhere else and then some. Prime Membership paid for its-self within the second month of use. I love it. And it even has the added benefit of streaming programming. Its hard to compete with an entity like Amazon but I think Newegg still has benefits.

I've only just realized how bad the egg has gotten after ordering an item during their black friday sale only to find it even cheaper the next day at "regular" price! I no longer chose newegg as my primary part retailer

Apparently Newegg things we're stupid.

I've been keeping an eye on Blu-ray burner prices and the cheapest they've had them is $60. I just got this "coupon frenzy" email with a coupon code for 15% off all Blu-ray burners. But oh, guess what? They bumped the price to $70. With the coupon code? $59.49. Rather insulting if you ask me...

Granted, Newegg has the lowest prices on Blu-ray burners, but that's not the point.

And egg saver shipping (this wasn't on the Blu-ray burners)? Thanks Newegg, but I'd rather not have my memory (or other small items) arrive in a smashed package 2 weeks after I order. DHL is a joke.

Just woke up in a shitty mood and felt like ranting lol

I keep emailing amazon telling them to buy newegg, if only to bury it and get their search engine and use it for amazon.

Still sad to see newegg keep sliding into oblivion. I miss the good days of free FedEx and awesome service.

I'm not buying from newegg for a long time. I drove out to do will call pick up on a video card. I wanted to return it a few days later and they want to charge me a $40 restocking fee? What? I never had to pay a restock fee before for a return... sorry Newegg... I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt... but I'm done.

There has never been a time when "only nerds knew about newegg" as some of you believe. Newegg has been nothing but a stellar online presence since it's inception and is the #2 online retailer after Amazon. Your perception of Newegg was simply wrong. Nothing more.

Whenever I use Amazon, I just use the free Amazon shipping option on the left to filter out all the merchants.

Staples.com is actually the 2nd largest online etailer in the world after amazon.

In the world, perhaps, in the US, it's Newegg. They are a profit machine.

According to what measure? The only reference I can find to such a title is in the tech-only department, and that was last year. They most CERTAINLY are not #2, that goes to iTunes/Apple.

NewEgg doesn't even make the Top-100 list for all retailers from 2011. Amazon is in the top-20 with Apple/iTunes close behind...even wasteland-stores like Radioshack and Home Shopping Network make that list.

By Forbes. How about it?
Newegg makes BILLIONS. I can't believe you people think it's some small operation. itunes isn't a retailer. They don't sell you physical product. We're talking about e-retail. Not fucking grocery stores. Should I really have to say this? This is a tech site.

And Forbes doesn't even list Amazon in their listing. So I have no clue who to believe. Heck they claim NewEgg is the "second largest online-only retailer"...I don't even see another large online-only retailer above NewEgg in their list at a passing glance.

There's no doubt that Egg is big...but they are being abandoned rapidly by the people who made them who they are.

Without public trading , we really have no idea how big Newegg is. Correct? I mean Valve is still a mystery , no one really knows for sure how much capital they have yet estimations are never stopped on its current value.

Nice to see a Newegg employee posting.

Newegg has turned to shit, simple as that.

I used to use NewEgg a lot, despite being a CA resident and having to pay taxes. Why? Because their prices were that good. With the occasional exception that is no longer the case. I will still use their site to search for things, read user reviews and of course take a look at their prices; but 95% of the time I will buy from Amazon instead. Why? Because often times their prices are the same, if not, better; no taxes to us CA folks; and as I have Prime two day shipping is "free" and one day is damn cheap if I'm desperate. (Pity it isn't $4 per order instead of $4 per item or I would use one day all the time) As for weeding out 3rd party vendors one can select Prime / super-saver shipping, or you can restrict your searches to amazon.com only.

Not to say I haven't had occasional issues with buying things from Amazon; but so far they have taken care of it each and every time. A couple months ago I bought a screen protector package and a oem hardshell holster setup. The holster / backside case turned out to be for an extended battery, even though no where in the listing did it say that was the case. As for the screen protectors, despite searching for 'Bionic Screen Protector' I somehow wound up on sp's for the Droid X/X2. I wrote to Amazon just to express my frustration; even said that I should've paid more attention to the SP specs, although I did make a point of explaining that nowhere on the SP listing page did the word 'Bionic' appear. How did they respond? 100% refund and feel free to keep the incorrect items and do whatever I pleased with them. THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is what customer service is all about. Seriously doubt that there's really a chance in hell of NewEgg doing do the same. Have numerous other examples of Amazon taking very good care of me. So while their listed price isn't always the lowest, the over all price usually is; and the peace of mind knowing that if I am unhappy with my purchase Amazon will take care of it with zero bitching is damn near priceless.

Uh, yes, with Newegg you do, since they filed for an IPO, which its since withdrawn. It hasn't had a down year since it started selling in 2001. For all you people talking shit like "newegg employee", I simply went and looked when I heard about the IPO years ago. Frankly this company has always been relatively large. I simply attacked the concept of "only geeks knew about it". That's a bunch of crap. They carry rice cookers for God's sake. Get a clue people.

NewEgg only started selling tables, rice cookers, Halloween costumes, and other crap made in China in the last few years within my knowledge. There was a time when they only did computer hardware....just like there was a time when their "Daily Deals" were actual deals and not just items being adverted at MSRP.

lol almost all their crap is made in China. Hell probably most of what you care about is made by Foxconn, in China.

Last month I ordered from Newegg for the first time in almost a year (had gift cards, only reason I ordered anything at all), and they shipped me not only the wrong item (I ordered an air purifier, they shipped me a rackmount server chassis), but it was much more expensive than what I purchased.

When I complained, they tried to make me pay return shipping (lol?), and then refunded me using the wrong funding sources despite assuring me 3 separate times they would not do this. It eventually got sorted out (the refund I mean, they never did send me the original item, and in fact told me NOT to order it again as they told me I would be shipped the wrong item again), but the Newegg of 2012 is truly a joke.

edit: I should also mention I had to physically telephone call Newegg personally twice to resolve it. They're email and chat support is just laughably, insultingly inept.

Show me any company where that is not the case now a days!

Not to sound like a total fanboy; but Amazon isn't. Have had good success with their online support... but I will call them 95% of the time as their phone support is fast and competent.

The search engine is like that on purpose, so people can 'shop' instead of 'search'. I'm not saying I support it, but just that it is in fact intended to work like that.

Newegg might have a sales uptick.
Amazon is starting to charge sales tax on September 1st for CA and PA.

Of course Newegg already charges sales tax in California, but they don't for Pennsylvania.

Sounds like you missed out on a great deal. legally if they ship you an item of greater value it's yours as soon as you take delivery. You should have ordered 50 and opened an eBay store or something. That's the only way companies learn these days is to get crucified by their ineptitude.

I have pretty much moved from newegg to Amazon. More selection, lower prices and faster shipping ($3.99 same day for many items around my area)

wrong button, accidental post. :0

I still use Newegg on a regular basis to *find* items. Once I find the part I need I tend to order it through someone else these days. The biggest thing that kills Newegg for me is their pricing on APO/USPS shipping. They gouge the fuck out you with those prices. A 27'' LCD that weighs 18 pounds costs $90 to ship through Newegg.

Any sane person who has ever shipped anything through USPS of that size knows that it doesn't cost anywhere near $90.

Meanwhile, Amazon costs almost nothing for shipping w/ USPS.

Never had any other problems with Newegg though. If it weren't for the anal rape 'shipping' charges i'd still use them.

tried to order some fans the other day, with shipping came out to be $60 for 4 fans, went on ebay and got them for $25 shipped. took 2 days extra but worth the wait.

I still buy from Newegg, Shoprunner helps fill gaps with free 2 day shipping.

I just bought 3 cheap fans from them $14.97 shipped. Nothing fancy, just
have a CPU fan dying on me and I figured I'd go with 2 new case fans.

We'll see how well they do shipping to my new address. USPS failed so far with
1Saleaday.com shipment.

Dont forget Texas (started July 15 I believe)

I'll be using newegg when possible now rather than Amazon to avoid tax.

I'm not sure what you're ordering but usually whenever I look at cases and stuff on sale they're "free shipping" and i always kind of marvel they're able to offer free shipping on items that large.

Just thought Id chime in and cast my vote. Amazon has taken all my business too. Free 2 day prime shipping and no CA tax are HUGE. The new business model of newegg selling all this extra crap is annoying.

And heres some salt in the wound - as I think a few people already mentioned amazons search / item display system sucks the big you know what... so I goto newegg for research, item search, descriptions and pics etc. then just match the items I need at amazon. How sad is that. It is what it is I guess.

Amazon doesn't always have near as good of pricing as newegg.. and yeah, their seach is a huge pile of you know what.

I am still willing to pay a couple more dollars to newegg.. which usually isn't the case anyway just for their organization of products.

Even when searching for specific things on Amazon, it doesn't always bring up what you are looking for... plus then if you want the prime shipping, you have to make sure it is sold by Amazon and not a different seller on Amazon. A lot of the time, Amazon has a higher price than other sellers of the same item on Amazon.

Big huge mess is what it is.

Alot of times Amazon is cheaper, sometimes its not. However shipping + CA tax is always going to add 10-20%, so... if it is direct from amazon its very rarely more.

I know what you mean about stuff being sold from different sellers, and it is indeed a headache/something you have to be aware of. Id say 90% of the time I add a prime item not from amazon it has CA tax, which just makes me have to search all over again.

Y'know, I'm not all that bugged by sales tax. The idea is it's going to the local state. Look around, all the infrastructure you depend on is getting paid by taxes. The idea that remotely shipped items don't benefit from local infrastructure is laughable. It's basically time they started coughing up.

I've had excellent success with amazon and prime. I rarely need support but when I do they've been remarkably thorough in solving my issues. Far more than I've ever encountered from any merchant I've ever used. As for newegg, ugh, I've had no luck getting decent support. Too many repeat e-mails after getting an utterly bone-headed initial response. Then having to argue to get an RMA due to their crappy shipping materials.

I shop the price around and if it's a big enough gap I'll ping amazon for a price match. Sure, it'd be nice if their price was the best out of the gate. But I'm fond of the saying "if you don't ask, you don't get" when it comes to negotiating a price.

Funny, for how many years has Best Buy been referred to as "Amazon's showroom"? It seems like Newegg is becoming the same.
