Can I splice 3.5mm cables?

why splice? you ruin the integrity of any shielding the cables may have. 25' cables aren't that expensive..

I've used ones from Radio Shack, but over time their connection weakens so you have to "jiggle" or turn the coupler to re-establish a connection. Getting a bunch from MonoPrice is the way to go imo.
you're taking a cable that has 3 layers similar to the cross-section of an onion, and trying to make sure each channel and connection doesn't bridge with another is a minor pain. most good cables also have foil shielding for EMI, to reduce current induced hum from other devices and cables, and cutting and splicing does away with that protection, effectively.
