FWIW, thought this was a solid deal, just got mine yesterday.

Not going to find a brand new receiver with 4 HDMI, Audyssey, and 75wpc for much less. Only real caveat is it's 5.1 only, no 7.1, though this makes almost no difference for movies - humans can't determine the direction of audio cues well from behind the head, etc. This would be a consideration for gaming though.

Anyone know any good bookshelf speakers to go with this for computer usage?

Depends on how much you want to spend.

For value I like either the Sony SS-B1000 or the SS-B3000..

Also on the extreme value end are the Dayton B-652 from Parts Express (though I think the Sony B1000 sound better)

Polk also makes some pretty decent bookshelf monitors at different price points.

+1 on the Polk Audio speakers. Just make sure whatever you go with are either 6 or 8ohm speakers.

I found these when I was looking to downsize my Def Techs. I use the smaller 170 bookshelfs for my computer (amp & dac). I use the 340s for HT. You can also save some money grabbing b-stock. Plenty of great internet dealers out there if you don't mind doing in home 30 day trials.

If you want something smaller, these are great too.

$200-300 for speakers and a little more if they are that worthwhile

Dammit, I need 7.1 for my father's HTS. His Kenwood receiver recently died. I should've pulled the trigger on the Shop Onkyo sale that just ended yesterday. :(

no 7.1, though this makes almost no difference for movies - humans can't determine the direction of audio cues well from behind the head, etc. This would be a consideration for gaming though.

This is why the rear speakers are monaural and not stereo. It's just that it's behind you - you get the directional from the side speakers and front speakers. It works, and it does it well, it's just not a huge difference.

Some movies would probably benefit more from it (quiet sneaky style movies or Jurassic Park style movies).

Not a huge selling point, unless you already have 7 speakers.

I'm looking for a new receiver, but NOT a Sony. That's what I have now and it really sucks. It's going in the bedroom for the audio there. I'm looking at Onkyo, Denon (which is a personal favorite) and Yamaha (which has proven to be great for my past receivers).

But, one thing that's been difficult to find: lots of HDMI ports. I have an HTPC, Blu-ray, HD-DVD, Xbox, and Dish receiver with HDMI. Add to that expansion (in case of PS3/4), I'd need at LEAST 6 inputs. 3D capabilities, Sirius, Internet radio...

That, and a good set up for speakers. I'm debating on whether or not to get a regular sub for ~$600 or build a Dayton sub for the same price. Just hear conflicting stories on the Dayton's (Parts Express).

Goddamn... $600 for a subwoofer? Holy shit for that it better have an 18" driver or something!

I have a $1300 Rythmik Subwoofer. You going to throw a stone at me :D.

Lets see, in the $600 dollar range you can go with......

Epik Legend
SVS SB12-NSD
Outlaw EX Plus
Rythmik FV12
HSU VTF-2 MK4

And even more choices, just listed more of the common ones with the best bang for the buck value

Largeish room built for a home theater. Gotta go big. The 10" Velodyne that was in there was good, just not great. Upgrading components and want to go big this time. 12-15" should do.

SVS and Hsu have some great reputations. I'll check those out.

That's a nice sub you have there. I looked a Rhythmik but I ended up getting a HSU VTF-15H. So different products in different price ranges for different folks. Nothing wrong with that. This is my second HSU product, they are a good company.

I got the AVR-1712 with MultiEQ XT from Frys for $227 about 2 months ago. Got two of em :) One for upstairs and one for the bedroom!

On bookshelves: gotta give a shout out to NHT (nhthifi.com) - if their lower end speakers are anything like the Classic 2's and 3's, you're in for a treat. Ascend Acoustics is also a great recommendation, as is Polk at the lower end - my "cheap" Polk in-ceilings have ended up sounding the best!

Some of us like our bass. Was so close to going Rythmik, their tech makes for very high quality output. Ended up spending ~$1700 on two Epik Empires.

Well done sir.

Is it me or are there no digital inputs? I'm assuming then that it can definitely read the audio off the HDMI stream?

Anyone use this with a game console? How is the lag?

I have the SVS SB12-NSD, got it for $450 on CL. Totally worth it and more. Thing is a beast.

75 Watts enough for good floorstanding and bookshelf speakers? I've been looking for a good receiver to go with these Sony's:
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSF-5000...TF8&colid=2QUV0HGUISZU8&coliid=I1JXBENZHJ1ZMX
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-B1000...UTF8&colid=2QUV0HGUISZU8&coliid=I1M3D0SKT4LQ1
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-CN500...UTF8&colid=2QUV0HGUISZU8&coliid=IIVFPTZH6WCRN

Though I guess watt ratings arent everything...

My 9-10 year old Denon is a 100 watt per (7) channel reciever while my speakers are around 2-240 watts.. Plenty of power at 100 watts so yeah you'll be just fine.

Correct, but it also has one optical and one coax digital in. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_033AV1612/Denon-AVR-1612.html?tp=179#details-tab Lag should be a non-issue.

+1. WPC ratings on receivers can be very misleading (All channels driven? What distortion? etc.) but those speakers are relatively efficient at 87-89dB/1W, so you should have no trouble waking the neighbors.

I'm now waiting out, hoping the AVR-1712 gets a decent pricedrop. You get these benifits over the 1612:

* Audyssey MultEQ XT instead of "regular" MultEQ
* 7 channels x 90 watts
* The ability to "assign" the two extra amps
* 6 HDMI inputs (up from 4 on the 1312/1612)
* 2 Component Video inputs with 1 output
* Dedicated "2CH DIRECT/STEREO" menu for configuring 2-channel audio differently than multichannel audio
* Zone 2 functionality (no pre-outs, must be powered via the two "assignable" amps)
* Room-to-room IR jack for hard-wiring a remote control (e.g. from another room or to hide gear in a closet)
* NO USB port

Yeah, whats up with that anyway? These models don't seem that old.
EDIT: Oh, they are a year old, guess they're on their way out.

An important criterion for speaker selection is the desired size.

For a smaller setup, I like the DIY ZaphAudio ported-box Kits based on the 5" ZA14W08 midrange:

- http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/2-way-speaker-kits/zaph|audio-za5.2-tm-2-way-pair/ - regular 2-way
- http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.co...zaph|audio-za5.2-tm-2-way-pair-with-cabinets/ - 2-way + enclosures
- http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/index.php?p=catalog&mode=search&search_in=name&search_str=zaph - The Zaph lineup in case one wants something larger based on that same midrange (MTM bookshelf, TMM towers, etc)

- http://www.audioheuristics.org/measurements/Testing/ZA14/ZA14.htm - Independent review of the ZA14W08, comparing it to the Seas Excel w15cy and Dayton RS150.

- http://zaphaudio.com/contest.html - user-submitted designs using the ZA14, including designs featuring a tweeter replacement = upgraded SB acoustics tweeter.

For a larger size, however, it's fairly difficult to beat this sealed-box combo: Dayton RS225 8" mid + Dayton RS28A tweeter : (the low distortion and high output capability of the RS225 is impressive) http://www.audioheuristics.org/projects_gallery/RS225_RS28A_updates/dayton_reference_rs225.htm

- That review compares the RS225's distortion to that of the venerable 7" Scanspeak SS8545 and related Usher driver. The Dayton was expected to be competitive at lower frequencies because it is an 8" driver, but it's actually cleaner throughout most of its bandwidth.
- Larger 8" relatively high Xmax driver allows for sealed box AND decent midbass at the same time

- Box used is the Parts Express 0.75 ft^3 sealed.

- Some additional LABOR is required for this build... you need to gather the electronics for the crossovers, and you'd need to do some drilling and cutting into the Parts Express box.

Onto Fully DIY subwoofers (for those interested):

- Modest Price: Dayton Reference HF, 15" if possible; prefer ported or passive radiator
- A little more money: Acoustic Elegance AV series, 15" if possible (passive radiator recommended, ported 2nd best, sealed still good), or the (unavailable I think) IB series woofers if Infinite Baffle mounting is desired (not common).
- Cost no object: TC Sounds LMS 5400 Ultra, 18".

I have the distortion numbers on these drivers...they're all EXCELLENT. There isn't much out there that performs like these. I might post some data later, but for now:

Here is some logic behind choosing these:

Dayton Reference HF: Distortion numbers are among the best (similar to or better than the Peerless XLS, mentioned below). Xmax is reasonably high at around 14mm rated = decent output.

Acoustic Elegance AV series: Slightly higher Xmax. The older AV series was based on an upgraded TC2+, I was told. The TC Sounds TC2+ is well known as a driver that beats the Peerless XLS, which is used as a reference by Linkwitz. - Unfortunately, these drivers are not available right now, and AE is somewhat of a custom manufacturer = long delays every time.

This also means that the TC2+ (revised version = TC-1000, I think) = a great option. I'm not up to speed with the current TC Sounds lineup, with the exception of:

TC Sounds LMS 5400 Ultra 18" = surprisingly low distortion. Highest output of...almost any driver available. I wouldn't waste this in a sealed box - multiple passive radiators for sure. It's a power-hog, and I wouldn't use it for that reason alone, but it's amazing.

Dayton Reference HF is a steal...if you can build a box for it. I'd personally go for 2x of those, and place the boxes far apart, but equidistant from the listening center = to lessen room modes, thus improving the "distribution" of bass in the room... which becomes an important factor in serious setups. In fact, it wouldn't be unreasonable to use 4 subs (in a bigger setup), arranged somewhat diametrically with listeners in center. Asymmetry might actually help in this case...

Edit: CRAP! I didn't realize this was the HotDeals forum...I thought I was in ComputerAudio. Sorry... I'll still leave this up, but geez :(

+1 for denon. i got a denon 1604 paired with B&W speakers. Amazing sound for almost 12 year old stuff.

Denon makes great receivers. I have AVR-1912 that I got from a closing Best Buy for $349.Couldn't be happier.

Yeah I may see about returning the refurb onkyo - this multiEQ stuff sounds like it's important for HT use. The 1712 seems like the ticket but seems like everyone except amazon warehouse deals ($320+) is sold out.

Call Electronics Expo for their best price. Their best price is closer to $200 than $320.

+1. Great place. I buy all my Yamaha's from here. Also, if you find a better price from a legit dealer, they will match/beat it.
