The debate has been going on for years and is very likely to continue until email is no longer a viable communications medium. The leading contender is V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai who claims he invented email as we know it today back in 1978 when he was only 14 years old. Ayyadurai was honored by the Smithsonian in February, but the debate still rages among Internet scholars.

Ayyadurai says that his invention was quite different than anything that came before — that email is the electronic version of the interoffice, inter-organizational paper-based mail system.

Me, the others are filthy liars who owe me monies so they invented these nonsense stories.

When I get my next $1m I shall sue.

I'm pretty sure that it's a little too late for this to matter to anyone but the people arguing over whether or not they're the ones that invented it. Besides that, Al Gore invented the Internet so everything else that came after it was just building on his work. If Al Gore wanted to do it, he would have invented e-mail, founded Facebook, and came up with the idea of Google spying on everything you do...if he wanted to.

So this guy pulled an apple and took something that existed already and applied it differently and thus he "invented it'?

That's all well and good, but who's going to invent the successor to email? Email as it exists today is a shody system in need of revamping.

That's a human problem, I think.

Now fax machines... that is another story!

User Mail was part of the Unix OS before 1978. I used it. You could access it over a telephone modem.:p

14 year old nerds think that they invented everything, because it is like the world never existed before the discovered it. They take something that they discovered, dab it with their turd, then claim that they invented it.
I remember when InBoxes & OutBoxes were actually boxes with “In” and “Out” written on them. I have seen nothing on the Internet that I have never thought of before, so you have all stolen my ideas.

I don't think current email will die..kind of like fax machines.
I don't know I use quite a bit.. but I don't have fakebook, I view it as a liability.

If Al Gore invented everything, who invented Al Gore?

He also invented time travel. He is his own grandpa.

Does it really matter who "invented" it, or in this case "named" his version of a pre existing tech email? As long as no one looking for a pay out, it does not matter to me.
If he is looking for a pay out, then we just rename it S-mail or something and gnu it.

iMail. Oh wait that's something apple would do...

Just realized MS already renamed it as well. Hotmail, duh, I am forgetful.

The discussion over on Slashdot pretty soundly proves this guy is an idiot. In no way shape or form did this person invent email, nor did any of his ideas make it into the modern day email lineage. Hes the cro-magnon of email inventors.
