Hello all. I appreciate any and all help. Getting a parts list for my brother.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

Mostly gaming and web browsing. It's being used in a living room, but not really as a HTPC. Just gaming from the couch.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

$1000 USD, tax and shipping included.

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.

Military base, in Japan. So it'll be shipped to an APO. I have no idea if there are restrictions on what you can send to an APO.

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

CPU.
Motherboard.
HDD, maybe even small SSD boot drive if budget permits.
ODD, whatever is cheapest.
RAM.
GPU.
PSU.
CASE.
Windows 7 64 bit copy.

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

N/A

6) Will you be overclocking?

No.

7) 7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?

1080P tv.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

As soon as I have a parts list.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.

UEFI would be nice but not necessary. My brother is admittedly pretty clueless when it comes to computer things so I figure if he NEEDS to go in to motherboard settings, UEFI might be easier for him to understand.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

No, refer to question about parts.

Thanks again for any help.

EDIT: Seeing as he's in military, moving is pretty frequent so I was thinking of making him a smaller rig. whatever is a good, small, MATX platform would probably be best.

CPU. i5-3450 $219.99
Motherboard. ASUS P8H61-I $79.99
GPU. ECS NGTX560TI-1GPI-F1 GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB $204.99
PSU, CASE. Sugo SG07 $199.99
SSD Samsung 830 128GB $129.99
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM $99.99
8GB RAM is ~$40

$954.93 so far. Add an ODD and whatever else I forgot. This from Newegg.

One possibility, depending on the games you play, is to use a i3-2120 instead and pick a Radeon 7870. Unless your game can use four physical cores, the i3 is aplenty and a speedy GPU like the 7870 will be better.

Could also move down to an SG05/6 to save some more money there. Both of these would require a slim optical drive though.

A mITX setup might work:
$190 - Intel Core i5-2400 CPU
$80 - Asus P8H61-I Intel H61 mITX Motherboard
$40 - G.Skill Value Series F3-10666CL9D-8GBNT 2 x 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM
$250 - PowerColor AX7850 2GBD5-2DH Radeon HD 7850 GHz Edition 2GB PCI-E Video Card
$80 - Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$29 - Samsung Slim DVD Burner
$10 - SYBA Model CL-CAB40042 SATA to Mini SATA Cable with Molex Power Adapter
$200 - Silverstone Sugo Series SG07-BW mITX case with 600W PSU
$100 - Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit OEM
---
Total: $979 shipped.

I definitely recommend the 7850 2GB over the GTX 560 TI as it uses less power, is a bit faster, and has more VRAM.

Could fit all that in an SG05, which would save about 70 dollars. Also, for the SG07, you still need a slim optical drive.

Updated the list. Though I still like the SG07 over the SG05

This looks good except the case needing a slim ODD. I was thinking since that 7850 is so small, maybe get a lian li q07 and whatever modular power supply you'd recommend? Would probably save some money that way too and then could up the CPU a bit to still fit within $1k budget.

EDIT: Saw your updated build. Didn't think a slim ODD would be that cheap. Hmm. Also, does newegg charge extra to ship to APO??

Not sure what your plan is, but it might make more sense to have the parts shipped to you (presumably in the US), put it together, and then ship it to him in one box. Some places charge a significant premium for shipments to APO. You might also look into getting a case locally - might be cheaper than having one shipped.

I was trying to tell him that it'd be easier for me to build it and ship him the whole thing but he's insistent on building it himself. I'll have to talk to him about what he wants to do after I find out from newegg and amazon how much their shipping to his APO would be.

Thanks for all the help everybody. It's greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Newegg wants $80 and Amazon won't even ship to his APO. Oh well. I just told him to go ahead and order the parts and ship them to himself.
