Sony talks PlayStation 4

I won't buy shit if its over $299 unless it comes with games and or a decent sized gift card

Screw better graphics. Work on better animation, AI, and physics engines. Graphical advancement is hitting a brick wall and sick of brown and grey "realistic" games. They're ugly as shit to me.

I am playing Dark Souls and Demon Souls on my PS3. Both games have good animations and physics, but there is a pretty big leap in graphics going from Demon Souls to Dark Souls. Dark Souls looks nothing like brown and grey, it is flat out gorgeous! However the Hardware for the PS3 is really maxed out running Dark Souls. Upgrading the textures, lighting, colors, detail, etc. from Demon Souls to Dark Souls has brought the PS3 to its knees. The console is not powerful enough to run the game without serious frame rate hits.

In my opinion the PS3 is cooked, at least if Fromsoft is any indication. They have taken the graphical abilities of the console to the edge. If you see the improvement in graphics between Demon Souls and Dark Souls, there is no way you would say "screw graphics, they are not important." Graphics are important. When they are done well they go a long way in contributing to a game's enjoyment.

Gameplay is way more important then graphics

Yes, but at some point the stagnation kicks in and it's time to move the tech forward. In theory although not always practice: Better tech = more potential for better games.

From Software knows this. :D
But luckily they did a nice job with both Souls games graphics IMO.
Demons Souls is darker and drearier than Dark Souls, but it's still a cool looking game IMO.
I mean the first time you encounter the dragon in Boleteria 1-1, Wow.

But yeah Dark Souls has better lighting and I do like that it's more colorful. The graphics and textures seem overall improved, but the performance tanks in a few areas like Blighttown. I was sort of amped for the PC dark souls port, but now I think it will be a quick and dirty job and not especially optimized or polished.

To a degree. If that was completely true retro consoles would have greater sales than they do however they don't.

With home consoles you need to push the edge in a new way (motion control for the Wii or Kinect for the 360) if you don't intend to make graphics one of its more important features.

I'm sure the PS4 will be graphically powerful , Sony hasn't skimped on graphics in previous generations. I do hope however they move away from custom designed chips that aren't well understood in a programming sense. I want them to pick a chip that developers understand how to push so we don't have lazy 3rd party ports this time around.

You guys realize if they announce the next gen consoles at 2013 E3 that does not mean the console will be out in 2013. You are still looking at a 2014 release or maybe a 2015 release. But I'd say it would be realistic to announce Next Gen console at 2013 E3 and Release in 2014.

I've thought this a few times too. I still expect the next gen to come out next fall, I am more curious about when they might announce the existence of their new hardware.

Dream scenario to me, just for the utter balls and assholishness it would require would be for either Sony or Microsoft, or even better both to announce their next generation 2-3 days before the launch for the WiiU. I cannot imagine a more amusing way to take the wind out of the sails of the WiiU launch than for this to happen. There is some precedent to this happening too. The week of the Vita launch in Japan, Nintendo released a game for the 3DS, i forget which one, that seemed like a very strategic distraction style launch.

I don't think that implies anything. In the past they have announced at E3 the year before launch but that's not a hard and fast rule. I'm 95% sure both next gen systems will be revealed and launched in time for next Christmas season. There is no reason to wait longer. Some developers have had next gen SDKs since last year.

I'd love to see a new Playstation console next year. I just hope that EVERY console maker improves the lifespan of their machines this time.

I don't want another RROD or YLOD issue with multiple consoles for people who actually use them... Adequate cooling and a solution that doesn't involve surface mount processors (both cpu and gpu) would completely eliminate that possibility altogether.

I doubt Sony and MS will give Nintendo more than a year of market penetration. People will buy the Wii U; the name is almost the same... Frankly if the LCD screen just turns into a gimmick, you still use the Wii sticks or "Pro" controller. I bet Nintendo would make some good money marketing a Wii U without the LCD controller

if the PS4 will really come out next year I will have to wait for a price drop of the next gen console in matter of 2 years ... I still have my PS3 and I'm still enjoying it lol ...

We will not see a new PS3 or 360 hit the market in 2013. They both have been very clear on 2014.

not been paying attention to Microsoft past few weeks have we?

2013 is very much in play.

Didn't realize the leak had a year but it is still all rumor right now. I guess I don't care enough right now. Developers could stop making games for a year and I doubt I'll still complete my current backlog, never mind the games I keep wanting to play that have been out for many years. I'm in no hurry for next gen.

they're not in a hurry for next gen either; microsoft is in a worse of spot really cause the xbox just doesn't touch the ps3 in my opinion. it used to be comparable but not any more.

the ps3 is at its prime right now idk if you guys played uncharted 3 or saw the demo for the new god of war the ps3 holds up EXTREMELY well for its age and will still last a couple years. and just to reiterate what somebody stated in this thread already... a 2013 E3 announcement for next gen consoles probably means there wont be a release in 2013

Doesn't the PS3 still have an unused CPU core that could be unlocked? I know that CPU power isn't the only thing holding the PS3 back but it would certainly help get a little more life out of the system.

No, not at all. What it has is one of the SPUs is reserved for the Operation System. So programmers are suppose to program their game with (MAX SPU - 2) in mind. You may be noticing the -2 and thinking ...that's odd. In order to increase production, the PS3 also allows up to one broken/fault core in every PS sold! To increase the yield, while PS3s are being made, one core is disabled. Generally the core that doesn't work should only 7 out of 8 cores run and if they are all working then arbitarily 1 core.

So there's the reoccuring rumor that maybe they could unlock that locked defective core for all those people whose locked core wasn't really defective. You could do that -- except -- a certain percentage of your PS3 customer base would get slow performance, random crashes, errors or be unable to run given software.

All those PS3 games that seem to be maxing out PS3 hardware and all those games that seem to be maxing out xbox 360 hardware, basically are. I think even Naughty Dog with their title Uncharted 2 said they maxed out the PS3 and felt they couldn't push it any further from a technical standpoint. Not surprisingly, Uncharted 3 wasn't much better than Uncharted 2.

I'd bet money the next gen consoles will have better graphics than anything we've seen from the best PC games out today, i.e. Metro 2033, Crysis whatever..

I agree with everything you said other than that. I doubt the next consoles will run a maxed out 1080p Crysis or Metro there will have to be compromises.

Yeah, if console gamers are lucky they'll get as good of graphics as the current PCs and not much more. That's typically the way it's been in the past anyways.

I do think that many gamers are gonna be dissappointed in graphics, because naturally they will increase in quality less and less as time goes by and we reach photorealism. The jump between PS3 and PS4 will be less then the jump from PS2 to PS3. Just as the jump from PS2 to PS3 was smaller then PS1 to PS2... the days of being "blown away" by graphics fidelity are slowly coming to an end for many, it's more up to artistic and gameplay innovations, which is good IMO

I'm optimistic we'll continue to see great games though. The doom and gloom comes I think when people just get tired of gaming and need to move on with more interesting things in their lives. I mean, people's interests change over time, you can't always blame others for that...
