When is this going to finally happen. Seems to me like Sony is testing out the waters with the psn plus service. Give away free games and discount stuff in order to reel people in and test the water a bit. Im down for discless if we can get new games at a bit of a discount

1) Going discless will make the next-gen systems a no-go for people with no or bad internet.

2) Going discless will kill Christmas gift sales, which account for most game sales.

3) Going discless will kill the retail presence of game consoles and games. Out of sight, out of mind.

4) Sony still has an interest in promoting blu-ray.

people need to get with the times, its a digital world

They can buy gift cards good for game purchases

Consoles will still sell in stores, the companies want the used market to die anyways so they win on that end. Once again sell gift cards good for the games amount

They can still use the blu ray drive for movies.

It just needs to happen, they bitch about piracy, so go digital like steam and be done with it. No more used game sales either which is fine with me I don't buy shitty games. There are ways to do it. I don't know a single person who plays games and doesn't have home internet.

They won't happen anytime soon.

Data caps from ISP's will prevent this from happening. Most gamers have slow ass connections that would result in slow downloads , errors or corruptions.

Even then brick and mortar stores would throw a huge fit because physical media drives there business. Once you take that away a very large industry that rely's on physical media being present would implode and it would only serve to hurt gamers.

I don't think gamers would have enough confidence as well with no physical media , PC gamers don't mind at all but console gamers aren't ready for that leap yet.

Discless games will not prevent piracy. If anything, it could make it easier to play copied games as you don't have to worry about getting the "cracked" binaries on to a supported medium.

I wouldn't be surprised if in a couple of generations the consoles will be discless, perhaps a reusable SSD or low cost, high capacity memory stick to transfer retail copies to consumers systems (for the countryfolk.)

I dont wish for the consoles to go exclusively discless, but I sure would love to be able to have that option, day one, to purchase and download any game I want from the PSN. I also would love maybe a little break on the price for that, or at least for the prices to come down more quickly like they seem to do on Steam for the PSN.

They are making strides in this direction lately with the PS3. Mass Effect 3 could be preordered on the PSN and then downloaded at Midnight. Then, more recently, the game Sorcery allowed for you to preorder and even preload the game before the day the game came out, you just weren't able to play until midnight of the launch day. I think the preloading is a huge step in the right direction for this. Retail/gifting can still have some part in things too. Gamestop can sell cards like they do for Gold and PS+ if they want.

I have to disagree with this. The only reason we have pirated stuff now is because of physical media. You have piracy on consoles now because people rip the disc files. If its a locked down os on the system with no discs and one source like steam to get the games how can you pirate anything?

really....?

You know, WiiWare games are getting pirated and they are download-only.
XBL games are pirated, and they are download-only.
Which leads me to believe PSN games have probably gotten pirated.

People will find a way.

If this is truly the case, Sony really does need to update their servers and provide a better wireless card for the PS4. It currently almost takes me an hour to download a 2gb patch for BF3. On my computer it is much faster, and seems faster even on the 360, but not by too much. This is not just a BF3 thing either, I have had slow download speeds while downloading content I have purchased from the PSN Store.

Wrong , having it be download only will not prevent piracy. The PS3 didn't really have a lot of piracy to deal with anyway thanks to its large game sizes. Most people can't download 25GB to 50GB games in any reasonable time frame or have data caps that would make it pretty much impossible for them to get more than one or two games a month , not nearly enough for piracy to have a serious effect.

Downloadable games will not lock out piracy and could in fact make it easier. Considering the game will not be encrypted on the drive (drive encryption would require specialized hardware on the hard drive to run at a reasonable speed otherwise it would take forever to decrypt a 25GB to 50GB title). Some crafty hacker could figure it out I'm sure.

Blizzard pretty much figured out how to stomp out piracy , force online DRM. Everyone hates it and its caused nothing but problems but I bet piracy for Diablo 3 has been non-existent (for now).

The ps3 was cracked wide open the same with the 360 all because of game discs. Without game discs people would have to download the pirated games. Ps3 game sizes are huge on some titles and like you said it would cut down on piracy because it would take forever to download and with data caps from the isp it would really cut it down.

It wouldn't be as easy as going to the video store renting a game and ripping it to the hard drive if the next systems didn't use game discs. They always bitch about used game sales but they don't change over from physical media to digital.

If they have a locked down system, force updates, and have some sort of drm the shit would work. They need to take some lessons from steam and learn how to do it correctly.

It is not possible at this point in time for it to be successful. At least not in the US/CAN, or much of the EU. In a place like Japan or some other "we actually have high speed internet and almost every one is connected", sort of place, this could work.

Maybe the generation after this one coming up, 6-8 or maybe 10 years from now. Even then, enough may still want the disc, and retailers that want something to put on their shelves, that it hangs on.
The way it currently is on the PC, where most content is available via both digital and hard copy, is likely to become the norm next gen, or the one after for the consoles.

It sure would be nice not to have to deal with DVD/Bluray.

The PS3 piracy is still really low though. You can't crack a new one and Sony has done a good job smashing people in the face with firmware updates to prevent new crack methods.

It took sony quite a while to fix it but they finally did I give them that much, now microsoft on the other hand not so much lol
