Corsair, a worldwide designer and supplier of high-performance components to the PC gaming hardware market, today announced the Corsair AX1200i Digital ATX Power Supply, the world's most advanced modular power supply for PC gamers and enthusiasts.

The AX1200i's digitally-controlled power circuitry provides incredibly stable voltages, and exceptionally low ripple and noise. These features are aided by the reduced component count and elegant circuit-board layout made possible by the DSP-based design. These design elements also contribute to the AX1200i's 80 PLUS® Platinum certification and incredibly high energy-efficiency of up to 92%. The high efficiency also results in reduced heat, allowing the AX1200i to operate in a silent fanless mode until the PSU load reaches 40% of the maximum power rating.

I thought 80+ gold cert was the best and they are saying it's just 80 plus Platinum which I thought was one grade below gold standard or am I wrong?

Nope, 80 Plus Platinum is rated higher than Gold. In the 230v server environment, there is one even better than Platinum with a rating of 80 Plus Titanium. Right now, there is only one 80 Plus Titanium power supply and its a Dell.

I posted this in another thread about the AX1200i.

To see if this PSU is worth it, we will have to see if the Corsair Link software has it's matured any...last time I looked into it, the Corsair Link software, and the firmware for the Corsair Link units were big letdowns. It's too bad that's the case, as the control Corsair Link is supposed to give you is something I really like. :(

While low ripple, noise, etc. sound good, you wonder just how important they are when just about everything you care about CPU/GPU/RAM/SSD etc. is on the other side of yet another power supply (DC/DC converter by any other name)? Meet the specs, exceed them by a healthy fudge factor, but I can't see spending extra for lowering the ripple even more of something that is going straight into the input capacitor of a DC/DC converter.

The efficiency and low fan use is another story.

If you start with clean power, everything will get clean power regardless of board level filtering. If you start out with crap power, then you might get clean power to the components after board level filtering. Hell, if your board level filtering fails, bad caps on the board and such causing video issues as an example, putting a clean PSU can "bandaid" the problem.

So basically, if it starts clean, it will definitely end clean.

If you get a good quality UPS that delivers clean power along with a good PS you should be good. I remember one time right after a hurricane I was bored to tears but no power and the power company estimated a week before it could be restored. I stupidly hooked up my computer to the generator for a moment to do some quick gaming (Internet was actually up LOL) and a few days later the power was restored. Well, after a few days on normal utility power I noticed strange freezes and lockups. Check I checked the voltages on the PS they were all over the place and the 12v rail was dipping way out of range under load. I replaced the PS and the problems were gone. Serves me right for exposing my rig to dirty power :)

Seems like a really bad idea to be giving enthusiasts any measure of control over something as critical as the power supply. Or does the software only allow monitoring capability?

Pretty sure its only monitoring and fan control. I'd also expect it to override control if it gets too hot.

Wasn't there a good article not too long ago stating that all these efficiency claims amount to very little on a real scale when compared to each other? Reliability is far more important to me personally.

You mean this article?

It's a good read :D

80 plus isn't perfect but I think it did acheive the goal of putting efficiency on the list of things PSU buyers and vendors care about and then slowly driving up the standards. Yes some vendors lie just like some vendors lie on max power output but that is why we have the likes of hardocp and jhonnyguru.

We are certainly at the point of diminishing returns though, when your PSU is already 90% efficient there just isn't much room left for improvement.

The important thing to take from that article is how imperfect the 80 plus system is, not that efficiency is non important.

Efficiency is still a very important metric. Wasted energy is directly proportional to wasted heat, and many of the efficient PSUs reach that efficiency due to high quality components. These PSUs will run quieter, and often produce the lowest output ripple noise.

You can think of efficiency as a byproduct of a well made PSU (usually). The best thing you can do, is look for an efficient PSU, then read reviews on it and compare it to others.

Don't expect this PSU to come cheap since it has the Corsair Link and you can adjust the settings on your desktop. Pretty neat design, just hope that the program doesn't destroy the PSU somehow by messing with the settings lol
