I'm posting this because, well, I bought it in an electronics market in Shanghai, and I guess I'm somewhat paranoid that it could be fake.

Compared to my OCZ vertex 3, this drive seems quite a bit slower. I'm also including one of my 7200 spinner.

do these numbers seem right? Do I have the drive setup wrong?

My first suggestion is to us AS-SSD and/or CrystalDiskMark. I tend to trust them more than HD Tune. Also, a lot of the stuff they sell in Shanghai markets is of questionable origin, that is why it is always best to purchase from a known, reputable dealer who you can easily go back to and with a posted return policy in case of problems. In any case, were these of a bare drive or of your system installed on the drive?

Those sequential numbers also look like the drive is running in SATA2 mode.

Your random write IOPs should be between 30 and 40k. 20k is WAY too low even if the drive is running on a SATA2 port.

I would recommend using Samsung SSD magician to test the drive. It will perform a TRIM pass and then immediately benchmark giving you pretty consistent results. I'm getting ~45k IOPs 4k random read and ~40k IOPs 4k random write on a SATA2 port, with the OS on the drive itself.

I hope you bought the drive at a shopping mall style market and not an outdoor flea market... the outdoor markets are notorious for selling fakes of EVERYTHING. There's still a chance you can get ripped off at a mall but usually malls have a strict complaint policy.

I bought it at the electronics mall in Xujiahui for 2350 rmb. So, not an outdoor market.

Heh, I have relatives that live 1 city block from Xujiahui, I actually bought some stuff at the Pacific electronics mall a while back. The merchants there should mostly be aboveboard.

Have you tried secure erasing the drive and updating to the latest firmware?

Your Random 4k and QD4k look good, just STR seems off. Are you sure the port it is connected to is in SATA3 mode?

the OCZ V3 has my system installed on it.

Haven't secure errased or updated to the latest firmware. it already has about 100gb of work files on it.

maybe i'm an idiot and it's not in the correct sata mode. will check as soon as i can.

wow. something seems seriously wrong on my end.

does anybody know how to verify from samsung the authenticity of the drive?

i realized that i had my drive plugged into SATA3gps and not the 6GPS controller. i switched it to the Marvell 6 Gbps controller and these are my new scores. why would they decrease??

Is your controller in IDE or AHCI mode ? if IDE change to AHCI, changing to Marvell controller is not a good idea, they are generally slower than intel native Sata 3 ports. Consult your motherboard installation quide and check for correct native Sata 3 intel port. These results look a lot like a Sata 2 speed.

this is my board: P8Z68V PRO

it's in AHCI mode. Marvell 6gbps is not as fast as Intel 3gbps?

ninjaedit: this shows that there isn't much difference between the Marvell and Intel controllers, at least on my board.

wow...something is weird here.

i just went to register my drive at samsung.com - this is what the S/N on the sticker of the box registered as:

256mb 830 showing up as 470 series 128gb?

I meant Intel SATA gen.3 with speed 6Gbps,
Your motherboard has :

Code:
Intel® Z68 chipset :
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), gray
4 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), blue
Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10
Support Intel® Smart Response Technology on 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processor family
Marvell® PCIe SATA 6Gb/s controller : *2
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), navy blue
JMicron® JMB362 controller : *2
1 x eSATA 3Gb/s port(s), red

You should have at least 2 ports controlled by native intel Z68 chipset 6 Gbit/s, the other 4 ports are controlled by a Marvell chipset witch isn't as good as intel one.

The two grey colored ports should belong be intel Sata 3 ;], had that mistake on my board too.

P.S. don't post your serial number ;] (or if you do not care, then post it ;p) Check the serial number on the chassis of the drive, or the S/N on the box.

i'll switch the "830" (if that's what it really is) to the Intel controller on next reboot. Currently a mechanical drive is taking its place. something still seems pretty darn fishy here....

China is well known for producing fake memory for cameras and such...could they now be doing SSDs too? I paid 2350rmb for this last week...$370 USD.

if you got scammed then tough luck, go and torch the place that sells it ;F (joke). There are indeed some kind of fake drives made in china but i dont think that is the case, check the gray port and run some tests, also if drive is 256GB and you have 100GB of data on it, it could be the case that the drive is slower, the benchmarks made by manufacturers always show a empty drive without data on it, and without couple of months real life use.

Like I said above, it looks like you got scammed. To see if it is actually a 120GB (or less) that they hacked the controller Grab a 250GB folder 'o stuff and drag it over to the drive. See if the copy completes or errors out 1/2 the way. That is a typical china scam, take a 8GB drive, hack the controller so it advertises as a 64GB drive.

looks like they pulled a bait and switch, possibly a 470 with 830 shell?

If you are lucky that is the case. If you aren't, it is an 8GB usb drive with a sata-=>USB bridge and hacked firmware to loop whatever you write over and over.

The drive is now completely full, so it must be a 256 drive...but why would the SN be one for a 128? This is super confusing...

Try reading some of the first files you copied over and make sure they are actually there.

Do not use the MARVELL controller on this series of boards!

For your board, use only the INTEL SATA3 - 6Gb/s ports for ssds.

1) From my research the MARVELL controllers, even with "SATA3" on these boards is outperformed by older INTEL SATA2 controllers.

2) You linked http://www.anandtech.com/show/4330/asus-p8z68v-review/5 saying that the marvell controller is comparable to the intel, however:
a) I dont see the intel controller being tested, atleast it doesnt list the specific controler & sata revision being used
b) From this page: "The operating system is installed on the Micron RealSSD C300, which is rated at 355 MB/s read and 215 MB/s write." This is SSD is not fast enough to be a fully accurate representation of the differences of controllers.

Hope this helps.

Good, you got lucky. Unfortunately, many have been scammed by unscrupulous sellers in China.
