If you want to know why it is such a bad idea to let the U.N. take over the internet, just listen to what they say they will do with it once they get control.

Democratic and Republican government officials warned this morning that a United Nations summit in December will lead to a virtual takeover of the Internet if proposals from China, Russia, Iran, and Saudi Arabia are adopted. It was a rare point of bipartisan agreement during an election year: a proposal that Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin described last year as handing the U.N. "international control of the Internet" must be stopped.

Lot's of government fear when international interests want to control what happens on the internet. Yet there is no/very little fear when continental interests want to control what happens on the internet. There's some sort of oxymoron in there somewhere... if only I could find it.

Wait, thriving Dictator Vladimir Putin thinks handing over control is bad? Why, that's Unpossible.

Continental interests have bought and paid for political parties spinning for them. International interests, not so much.

This would be the first practical step to a one-world government. If the UN could control the internet, and the content of the internet, then they could also control what people think because content control equates to the discussions that are help in the public forum, and the battle for freedom always begins in the mind.

It'll begin with one seemingly small "gesture of faith" aimed at cooperation and peaceful "tolerance" in the effort to be politically correct. It will end a few decades later when tyrants have complete control over our lives and we will no longer know what we believe. Of course they can't do it too quickly, but over time the general public will begin to believe the lie that it's "for their own good"

While I don't think the UN should have control, we have to keep in mind that high level domain control is currently held by arguably the most corrupt country on earth.

And the dissemination and incorporation of New Speak into our daily lives will begin, and reinforce the international state.

However, if they handle the control of the Internet like they handle issues in the Middle East, will anything really change? Everything will just be talked about but nothing changed. :D

"These are terrible ideas," Rep. Fred Upton, a Michigan Republican, said during a U.S. House of Representatives hearing. They could allow "governments to monitor and restrict content or impose economic costs upon international data flows," added Ambassador Philip Verveer, a deputy assistant secretary of state.

Am I the only one who read that and thought, "Yeah, only the US is allowed to do that, dammit!"

no, because there are freely available examples of other countries doing this, China comes to mind at first.

regarding the whole idea - are you f'n kidding me? HANDS OFF MY INTERNET FREEDOMS!

He probably can't figure out a way to get kickbacks from it. As soon as he does, he'll vehemently argue for such a proposal....

:D

While I agree that the UN is probably not the one to control the internet, the US complaining that other countries will censor things and ruin the internet are rather hilarious after SOPA and PIPA's attempts. I guess if it gets ruined ... they want it ruined on their terms.

Yea brosef, It sure is a slippery slope from communications infrastructure planning to mandatory UN mind-control devices and the arrival of the antichrist or whatever.

I think the United Nations is too "temporary" to handle something of this magnitude. A healthy sneeze can dismantle the UN and cause it to be abolished, and then what? It's like letting the League of Nations take control over the internet. How'd the League of Nations work out for the world?

None of the lawmakers that supported those bills actually read them so they didn't know any better.

yet both parties have no problems about the gov taking control of the internet for american citizen for the same reasons.

If you think the United States is the most corrupt country on earth you might want to try reading some different propaganda once in a while.

Somehow I do not like this idea at all ;). At least the U.S. government is united in it's refusal of it. I hope this gets a lot of publicity, because it really needs to not happen.

I don't believe it's possible for any one particular entity (or a group of entities) to "control" the internet. Only in participating countries could the internet be "controlled" by means of filtering, and that's not really a viable longterm proposition.

And here I was thinking that the US created the internet and people around the world connected to it because it was better than anything they could have come up with.

Of course you can control the internet. Hardware exists in locations subject to government regulation.

Those were "attempts". In many countries those would be just a warm up for what the government can already do.

Bordak, no place is perfect, but you must be either really young without much life experience or really sheltered if think the US is even close to being the most corrupt country on earth. Kickbacks and bribery are just accepted ways of life in many, many places in the world. In some countries citizens EXPECT their leaders to enrich themselves in office; if not they think they don't have enough ambition. Industrial espionage is widespread throughout Europe and Asia, often with the consent of the governments.

If you think what the US does is anything like what Arab Muslim countries, Russia, China and even many European countries do with the internet, then you are simply mistaken. Not even close.

Yep, it's almost funny to watch those whose panties get in a bunch if the US government tried to eliminate movie/software/music piracy and then watch them put in on the same level as countries who will block out anything that questions the government or shows it in a bad light.

So when an international tax is levied, who comes to the door with the gun to collect it? An enemy, foreign or domestic?

US bad, so lets ignore what the UN is doing.

Even if the US is bad, its a red herring for the issue at hand.

At this point in the game, giving the UN power over anything is a bad idea. I have been anti UN for around two decades now. So take whatever I say how you like. I believe the UN should exist, but believe it's powers should be drastically curtailed.

The internet, should not be censored by the U.N. What our own country does is bad enough. I could not imagine what it would be like with the U.N. destroying the show.

The US, Franc and Britain have veto power. So. Good luck with that "take over."

If they adopt these ham-fisted standards and only implement them on their own domestic networks. Good on them. It's not like it'd be anything new.

This. Bowing to the will of the MPAA (and frequently FAILING) is not quite the same as kicking down my door and disappearing me because I said Chairman Asshat sucks monkey balls on Facebook.

The USA has it's problems, but I'd rather have our problems than live in China or a 12th century theocracy like Saudi Arabia.

the US will suggest a compromise: hand over control to the RIAA and MPAA because they are independant, non-governmental entities.
