Move over Kinect, the Leap is here and it costs less than seventy dollars. Although the video demonstration below is on a Mac, fear not, this device works equally well on a PC.

Saw this on G4 yesterday. If it works as good as it looks in the video, definitely in for 1.

it does look cool

though the 'rumor' is that the kinect is far more powerful than it shows now, and its severly limited by the 360, due to having to work with the original ones that have low usb bandwidth

and oh yeah, every copy of Windows 8 on the desktop should come with one of these

Totally Meh.

I would NEVER want to play though Half-Life 2 as shown in that brief demo. In fairness certain tasks and apps work well for a touchscreen like interface...not just limited to Angry birds, and Google Earth. Bot most apps are not.

I would stick it to my coffee table and use it for my HTPC, would be a nice way of scrolling through my library and a nice conversation piece.

Sure looks very interesting for the price. There aren't any specs on their site though, apart from "8cubic feet of 3D interaction space", which i assume is centered around the device.

The only question is the availability of programs/apps that can take advantage of this.

I'd like to see this used in:

-MMO's such as second life, where the sensor creates a 3-d image of your face and in real-time creates a character of whatever race/species conforming to what you actually look like IRL. Other users would see YOUR facial expressions but as a virtual character; combined with VOIP to have a more immersive experience.

-Point and click adventure games. Instead of just "using" an item on another item, you virtually pick the item up, rotate it / manipulate it into the correct orientation for whatever the puzzle is. Take it a step further and have virtual puzzle boxes that can be opened, turned, etc etc

-Sex games

Just a few ideas.

I just posted this yesterday on the Computers and Gadgets section, this would be cool to try out just for kicks. But I'd rather spend the $70 dollars toward an SSD at the moment.

Pre-ordered one.

The idea of being able to network several of these and create a large, whole room interactive space is REALLY exciting.

Now, I wait.

Looks sweet.. I might not use it for all games, but for something like browsing around files/folders/internet it looked handy. Not sure about typing text tho. Or playing FPS games. But there are very likely uses for this that haven't even been imagined yet... cool stuff.

8 cubic feet isnt much.

i suspect alot of up close and personal lcd gesturing.
looks like it could be a kinect in a little box.

I see this as being a good way to animate hands in use for video games and CGI movies. A kind of real time capture like they used in L.A. Noire.

Just pre-ordered one. Just a heads up though....their pre-order form isn't SSL/https secured. Hoping they're not an elaborate scheme to collect CC numbers.

You noticed the site wasn't SSL and still pre-ordered? lol

Minority Report was ten years ago. And the system they used was real, live tech. It existed at the time. It has just taken a long time to get to the consumer market.

Just google "John Underkoffler" - the guy who designed it for the film.

Yeah buy that was a bit more expensive and required a glove.

Neat tech, though the message on their website makes me laugh "say goodbye to your mouse and keyboard!"

So I guess people won't actually type up documents in their future?

If you paired it with Dragon Naturally Speaking or something similar, you could do away with your keyboards. Just don't just browing for NSFW with it.

Up to 8 feet?

The Leap is a small iPod sized USB peripheral that creates a 3D interaction space of 8 cubic feet

Which is a 2 ft per side of the cube area which is probably centered on the device, so a foot forward/backwards and side to side, and two feet vertically.

Future News: Logitech buys Leap. You know it's gonna happen...
