Electronic Pickpockets Hits The News Again

not sure how "swiping" a car through a slot is any more difficult than "swiping" a card across a sensor.

I'm amazed the States hasn't been quick to adopt chip cards. That would mitigate some of the risk as the information being transmitted would be a bit more secure.

With all the trouble RFID causes, why are they on credit cards? Do credit card companies want these to be stolen?

The video is ridiculous. If I saw someone waving an iPad by peoples asses I would "nudge" him and make him drop that thing :p. "Oops, I broke your credit card scanner I MEAN iPad."

Even so, I find it hard to believe that someone wouldn't say something or find it fishy.

Time to foil wrap your wallet. :) Going to send this to my non tech savvy friends too!! Muahahahhaha

Sadly this coverage is for the NBC station in Chicago so it isn't typical FUD from a small local news station either.

The station really played it up when they aired the segment as if somehow magically "hackers" were doing this when in reality it was almost a ad for the guy in the segment to sell his RFID blocking sleeves.

It's only more difficult for dense people who can't seem to figure out that they don't have the mag stripe facing the right way.

So now I have a legitimate excuse to destroy those sitty tablets on sight...:D

I saw someone waving an iphone at the starbucks drive thru the other day. I knew then I was in the wrong place.

If only we only had a means to pay for goods and services without all these fancy electronic gadgets. Perhaps something made from paper or even a metal. Maybe we can get those lunkheads in the government to come up with something.

I just think it's a shame that we have all of this technology and the goal is to find a way to steal from someone rather than put the tech to good use. I guess it's a sign of the times, no one wants to work for their income anymore. I don't think this is what was meant by trickle down economics. Maybe if they start throwing these bums in prison it might change a little but they need to start at the top with the one's stealing billions and work their way down.

Still no convictions from 2008 thieves.

My latest Visa came with the RFID on it. I called the bank to send me one without it. The person on the phone didn't really understand why said I was protected and not accountable. But if this still happens, you still have to deal with it and it can be a long agonizing process.

I just cut mine out with a utility knife. It's not like the chip sits in the mag strip or anything. I'll do my part to look out for mag/pin scanners... but I'll be damned if I'm going to be on the lookout everywhere I go for some dick waving his magical iPad case around like some sort of credit fairy godmother.

People around me thought I was paranoid... I'm now linking this article for some sweet vindication. :)

yeah
we've gotten so lazy. It is no faster swiping than sliding.

good thing tin foil works, so we don't have to pay those guys who make the sleeves.
tin foil between two sheets of paper, and I'm good.
