I have a Dell 2407 now and looking for something with higher resolution and better colors. From what I've read the Dell U3011 has hella accurate colors and that resolution would be perfect. I won't be gaming so I don't care about response time.

Is there anything better that I should consider or is Dell going to update this model anytime soon? I know some of their other models are LED backlit

"hella accurate" = wide gamut, which in most applications is actually not going to be particularly accurate. Primary colors, especially reds, are completely out-of-balance and excessively intense. Unless you have a completely color-managed workflow from photography through production to printing, there is no need for a wide-gamut monitor.

see this thread for some discussion.

Unless you absolutely think you need 2560x1600 resolution, stick with a standard gamut 27" panel at 2560x1440 - there are plenty that are every bit as good as the wide-gamut displays.
HP zr2740w if you want anti-glare, or if you prefer glossy, get one of the ebay korean models or this one from Microcenter.

If you don't game, and you want accurate colors, you are into some sort of design? If you share more details about how you're planning on using the monitor, you might get better feedback. Without knowing more about what your intended usage is, I wouldn't recommend any of the above monitors.

Thanks, I had no idea wide gamut could cause such problems. After reading some other articles I agree a standard gamut display will be better for me (I mostly work with web graphics)

I'd prefer something more glossy and that korean monitor sounds good but I'd rather stick with a more reputable company

How does the HP compare to the Dell UltraSharp U2711 or the Samsung SyncMaster S27A850D? Hard to decide reviews I've read for all 3 are good

Samsung has PLS panel http://www.ipsmonitor.com/news/samsung-sa850-gets-super-pls-panel-tech/
it sounds good but how much of that is marketing and is it actually better?

There is no comparison in terms of sharpness and clarity between the Samsung S27A850D and matte IPS panels due to the excessive anti-glare coating they all use.

Avoid the Dell U2711, it is wide gamut.

This image shows how the anti-glare coating matte IPS panels distorts the clarity of the pixels

The Samsung uses semi-glossy anti-glare coating, which is the lightest matte coating around. This is an image of semi-glossy coating up close on an IPS TV

In terms of the Samsung vs the HP, the HP has lower input lag and slightly better black levels, but white+light colour vibrancy is killed by the anti-glare coating, along with the sharpness. The Samsung has more inputs and a scaler so you can use 1080p resolutions with your consoles while the HP only works @1280x720 with external devices.

Thanks NCX. I don't care about input lag or being able to use it with consoles since I'll mostly be using this for coding and graphic design, no games. It's good to know it has a lighter anti-glare coating. sounds like this one might be the best for me
