Need 3.5 pounds of highly enriched uranium? No need to look on the black market, just give Kodak a call, they had a nuclear research reactor in their basement. The best part? It's been there for the last three decades.

For more than 30 years, Kodak Park was home to a little-known underground labyrinth containing a small nuclear research reactor, one of the few of its kind in the world.

Well, you learn something new every day.

How can a company capable of manufacturing a nuclear reactor, and use if for more than two decades...

fail?

Those wing nut wack jobs in Iran are cause for concern...?

It's just a research reactor. Any university worth a damn with a nuclear engineering department has one.

Most universities in the USA have lost or are getting rid of their research reactors and radiological sources, as it is way too much of a hassle post 2001 to keep the stuff on hand.

Not true. As someone else stated, these have faded away to a very small number. Although your statement would've been more accurate say 20-30 years ago.

Rochestarian here as well. I was surprised when I read that in the Sunday paper. I guess they kept it under pretty good wraps.

The impression I got from the article is that they only bought it, not built it.

My understanding is that the nuclear materials were all removed under government supervision a few years ago.

The kind of devices were common once. It is not like that had some secret power plant running. I dislike the idea that people are reacting as if this was something being hidden from them.
There is no conspiracy, you didn't need to know and you didn't know to look for it.

Nuclear reactors, fission, nuclear weapons.... these are textbook exercises today.

That's why it's so ridiculous when people claim that [insert nuclear-enriching nation here] is years away from a weapon.

The weapon is the easy part.

It did seem fubar that the cops and especially firefighters didn't know.

Umbrella Corp coming to a town near you! Whats life like in Rochester?

I want a reactor in my basement. Screw those solar panels or wind turbines. Just gotta get a lead lined recycle bin. :D

"Corporation keeps big secret by not even trying.

This and more at 11." - Your local TV news reporter.
