NJ Town Bans Texting While Walking

Alright then, I guess you guys shouldn't let the fact this has literally nothing to do with what your upset about get in the way of working yourself up into a misguided furor. That would just be too rational.

Would you let up? We've obviously expanded the scope of this thread. You are the only person who does not seem to understand that simple fact.

We should just stop discussing a very real issue because the initial impetus for starting the discussion is of questionable origin? Yeah, that's totally rational. The original story is pretty much irrelevant. Steve posts all kinds of sensationalist crap all the time as you should know by now. We generally ignore the specifics and discuss the broader issues surrounding the story.

I'm not sure why it bugs you so much that we have decided to discuss this issue.

I'm going to guess that you are being sarcastic, but for those who don't get it:

Cell-phones do not emit ionizing radiation. There is no second hand radiation poisoning and the sun is more harmful than cell-phone exposure.

How dare you try to tell me that some radiation isn't dangerous... what right do you have to decide what types of radiation to which I get exposed?
Next you're going to try and tell me that little girl's experiment about microwaving water wasn't real... People need to live more naturally and radiation/chemical free which is why I eat healthy things like nuts and bananas and I have replaced all of my dangerous formica and linoleum surfaces with natural granite.... Keep your oppressive and dangerous radiation away from me and my kids!

Then what? You're going to claim that third-hand smoke is less dangerous than industrial exhaust or unpasteurized milk?

The issue of "government overreach" is largely invented and often as a result of spurious information like what was presented in the article. Here's a clear cut case of local government doing exactly what it should do, yet you can't even seriously discuss it because the thread is hijacked by reactionaries complaining about something that didn't happen. If you want to have an anti-public sector circle jerk, cool, but at least do it when government has actually done something wrong.

Everytime you get pulled over Officers should do test (like if you are drunk or no) to see if you are stupid or not.

if you are than you should get ticket, if you are not you are free to go.

Bananas are naturally radioactive fyi, if you manage to eat like a hundred trillion in a short while you very well may die from it.

I heard there was a light at the end of the tunnel. The optimist in me was excited for only a mere second until I realize that the light was in fact, NJ.. :(

So are nuts and granite... and here I was thinking that my sarcasm was incredibly obvious....

What if im standing still? Dancing? Shuffling? Skipping? Moonwalking? Texting in a wheelchair?

Why do you think it's fair to punish the vast majority of people who aren't stupid enough to injure themselves while texting just to protect a small amount of people who are stupid enough that they will just find other ways to be stupid (if they even obey this stupid law)?

I don't recall mentioning anything about fairness in my comment.

And how fast were the drivers going?

They probably weren't hit by cars, probably walked into poles or fell down open man holes, maybe even running head on into msnither texter. Lol

The worst part is that in many cases, these tiny incursions into our freedom have nothing to do with actual safety or coddling of the stupid. They are about revenue. Issue tickets for something knowing people will continue to do it anyway, and you've created what is essentially a new tax without actually calling it a tax.

Everything is being subjected to an ever-increasing amount of government regulation, almost always under the guise of protecting the stupid, when in reality it's about making a much larger legislative base from which to charge fees and fines to "tax" people with.

+1
Glad to see some else get it.
It's a never ending circle "more regulation"="more taxes"="more regulation"

You do realize that some natural granite can be a significant source of radiation and radon gas.

Fort Lee or Fort Ree as we call it. Is giving 485 fines to people who text while walk. its the same ticket for Jay walking. Small ritzy towns are finding new ways to ticket people.

or using it as a GPS?

They probably wouldn't care because, once again, the town didn't ban "texting while walking". It didn't ban anything. All they did was say they're going to more strictly enforce jaywalking laws, and not because people are texting but because they are... wait for it... jaywalking. Read the original article ffs.

I can't be sure; but they may have enacted the law to help drivers from being sued by idiot pedestrians who are texting and walk into traffic without looking. Ft Lee is a town with lots of traffic, and people routinely jaywalk from between parked cars, etc.. If you don't know why they need to specify why doing stupid things is illegal, you haven't been sued by a pedestrian who ran out in front of your car 'because he thought he could make it', and then sued me for $10 million dollars for something that was clearly his own fault for being a dumb ass. And even though it was dark, and he was crossing in the middle of the block from between cars, my insurance company gave him $5 mil. This country is fu**ed up.

another great example of government getting in the way. The human gene pool has a natural way of purging failed genes; let it run it's course.
