I just ordered a new iMac with a 1tb drive. I will be installing an SSD in it for a total of two drives. I want to make the SSD the OS drive. How do I install Lion on the SSD? Would I just need to clone it to the SSD? Or because of the different drive types, does it need to be a fresh install?

Thanks.

Fresh install is always the best way to do it. Or do a full system backup with Time Machine, then use your dvd installation media and perform a restore from a back-up.

I don't think install DVDs are included anymore. That's one reason why I was asking how to get it installed on the second drive.

There should be a recovery partition on your drive in lieu of install DVD's. You can boot to that and restore from your Time Machine backup.

Wow!! I did not know that. My bad. I didn't know Apple went that route too. When I bought my MBP few years back, it came with the DVD installation media.

It must be a somewhat recent thing if true. My 2011 MBP came with a full set of DVD's.

Just to confirm, after installing my SSD as a second drive in my iMac, I used CMD-R to go into recovery mode. I then chose to reinstall Lion and selected my SSD instead of the original drive.
