AMD Radeon Announces HD 7000M Series Graphics

I'm liking how AMD planned, and is using, their fully enabled pitcairn core as the 7970M, very efficient chip and pretty much perfect for this use. They just down clocked it to fit the power requirements.

But the 675M is Fermi, not Kepler. The 680M is the real competitor to 7970M and has yet to be officially announced.

Did you get your order in for the 7970M already? I heard XoticPC offered it for a few hours, then had to show availability dates as "end of May".

Oh I know. It's considered a rebadged 580M pretty much, so I wasn't expecting much. My laptop's outfitted with the 7970M as far as I know (in sig.), so hopefully there's no shortage or whatnot.
 
The 7870M looks like a fantastic card for its power draw, just slightly under the 675M in terms of performance but at about half the wattage -- if the benchmarks on AMD's slides are to be believed. Nvidia's lineup is just plain weird: the 660M is nothing more than an overclocked 650M (DDR5 version), then the 670M and 675M are just rebadged Fermi. Who knows how the 680M will perform against the 7970M. Judging by the performance of previous generations, a bit faster at a big price. The real winner here looks to be the 7870M, if they can get it into smaller laptops.

For me at least, the most important part will be the new power-saving tech and switchable graphics. If they can get that working on Clevo-based systems -- as I really don't want to buy the 10 pound + power brick Alienware -- I'm definitely looking to get a P150EM laptop.
 
I'm wondering about the next generation mobile Firepro cards. The numbering convention of AMD is too confusing for me to follow for sure, but I assume the next 17" Firepro card should be based on the 7970M, right?

Wasn't the last mobile firepro card the M8900? That was based on the 6970M. So their next one should technically be based on the 7970M. There's also the M5800 alongside the M8900.

When it comes to naming, AMD takes the sh*t-cake.

That's what I am thinking, but AMD does nothing to market these. When I had the Firepro M7820 (the card previous to M8900) they did not even have it mentioned anywhere on their website. I guess we'll know when Dell announces their M6700.
 
Yaay! Now I can run crappy console game ports with overpriced DLC at 120 FPS with everything maxed out instead of 100 FPS! My e-peen feels bigger already!

They don't do a very good job of consumer level of advertising for these things. When I was selling computer goods to businesses I would get a ton of junk in the mail praising the firepro's, but it wasnt from AMD/ATI, it was from the OEM.
 
On the desktop, the FirePro 7900 is pure ownage (for the price of course). It will be interesting to see what comes from the new architecure in both mobile and desktop.
 
I like how they tout the latest and greatest, first 28nm gpu etc.. then simply pop out of a 15 pin dsub (vga port) at the end of the video.

I was like WTF? why not a display port or hdmi. LOL :D

When are they going to launch an APU with a 7800 series IGP to enable dual graphics with these chips?

I loving my HP laptop with AMD APU + GPU in crossfire works nicely. Only problem is with CPU bound games where the APU is a tad too slow, but only the crap games suffer this problem.

Crossfire profile support used to be an issue for the first 6 months after launch, but they have now fixed it with APU support in the monthly driver releases.

I am a bit disappointed there is no crossfire for Rage though. Currently replaying it on Nightmare mode and 100% completion. Even with APU only I still get 40-50 fps in Rage lol.
 
No point in the FirePro for games, kind of a useless direction to go.

Far be it from me to stop someone from doing the graphics work, but was just saying that using the FirePro as a gamers card is kind of a pointless endeavor.

I agree with what you said, but still don't see mention anywhere that someone is wanting to use a FirePro for games.

The FirePro cards work great for gaming. The M7820 did great, my Quadro games great too. You do get much more gaming perf/dollar out of the gaming cards, but it's not like the pro cards suck at gaming or anything. For me, the gaming performance trade-off is worth the extras you get in a mobile workstation.
 
i hope this thing makes its way onto the next macbook pro, and that multiple monitors is supported. been waiting for this.
 
Does AMD have anything like nVidia optimus to control power usage in laptops with these chips, or is it just if it doesn't have a switch to go to integrated you're always using the big one?

I'm thinking of picking up a sager soon once they have these and ivy bridge in them, but am just wondering if nVidia is worth a bit of a performance hit to get a better battery life. Don't want a 7970m being used all the time, sagers advertise optimus on their nvidia versions but I don't see anything similar or a manual switch if you go with AMD.

I'm guessing here but it looks like it's on all the 7xxx series mobiles. They may or may not put a sticker on there...
 
So what are the chances we could finally get a thin sexy 14" gaming laptop with this card and IB Cpu?
 
Optimus, Enduro(?), switchable graphics...

It all comes down to; on batteries you want to use the Intel or AMD integrated graphics, plugged in you can use the discrete GPU. All the laptops I've used recently do that just fine.

Using the discrete GPU while on battery is a rather short lived experience... ;)

I was just unsure that all AMD laptops even had an integrated chip to use or not. I don't see it mentioned on a lot of AMD equipped laptops.
