Hi!

There used to be a time when NEC 2490 with H-IPS and A-TW "no-white-glow" filter was the one (I got 2690 because 2490 wasn't sold in Europe).

What (or which) is the current most recommended all-around IPS monitor? (Eizo SX2462W, NEC PA241W... ?)

Just being curious, not that I plan to buy a new one :)

Thanks

Not sure about an exact answer to your question but right now many of us are enamored by the low cost South Korean glossy IPS monitors, 27" 2560x1440 $330-$400 shipped.

The current brands being discussed are the Shimian, Catleap, Crossover and Davi.

The Davi is different than the rest in that it has a matte finish with claims that it isn't an overly agressive coating (?), feedback is just starting to come in though.

Here's the massive discussion thread in case you've missed it: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1675393

As someone coming from a 20wmgx2 IPS, I have to say, I'm exceedingly pleased with my korean monitor :)

The 2490 with the ATW still beats everything if it were new. Let's not compare slanted stand factory production reject panels with NEC and Eizo units.

If you re-read my first sentence, you'll see i wasn't comparing. But otherwise hundred's of peoples' testimonies have rolled in, many with trained eyeballs, and just about all seem extremely happy with their purchase.

What's funny is that, besides the occasional tilted Catleap stand (it is the Catleap with this problem), a lot of premium priced 27" monitors exhibit the same defects, Dell, Hazro and Apple included. The difference with them is that you have a warranty/guarantee to fall back on, but you're paying double, or even triple, for that luxury.

An overwhelming majority of the Korean monitors are arriving in either perfect, or near perfect condition.

If you dislike glossy and don't need wide color gammut, the 24" 1920x1200 Dell U2412M can often be had for $300. That NEC is probably still superior in various ways tho (beyond color gammut).

Wasn't really directed at anyone just jesting and suggesting if OP bothered buying a 2690, a 1.5K+ monitor at intro, and mentions Eizo, then playing Russian roulette with essentially bare panel production rejected monitors with a very difficult to fulfill warranty probably does not fall under best all around IPS monitor.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I have yet to hear of not more than one person (who lucked out and got a review panel) since February, after sifting through thousands of posts, who has had a absolutely zero defect panel, even those who pay specifically for it. OP does not even want to buy anything just scouting the market. These are hardly competition in the same market as NEC and Eizos, the Dell's even aren't.

Haha, good points, they aren't really meant to compete, the Korean IPS monitors are consumer all the way, a pro may be able to work with them with a little extra effort (calibration etc) but they certainly aren't the target market. They are a value play taken to the extreme imho ($324 shipped, who would have ever thought?)

As for your second paragraph, i cannot confirm nor refute with absolute certainty. I have heard many say that they didn't have any dead/stuck pixels, but they may not be looking closely enough, nor would some of them recognize certain other flaws like milder tinting, or notice that occasional thin feint bar at the bottom (but it's supposedly present on other 27" LG brands, Apple etc).

Thanks for the answers.

Well, my question is intended more towards mid and high-range models which are available in Europe. If you speak about specific "good value" korean monitors, better post their model names. And I'd pass on glossy monitors :)

Btw, in case my NEC 2690 breaks down I have two 2090s in reserve. Bought them some time ago from german eBay for a quarter of their price :)

There's no real need to look at recommendations for these monitors. They do what they say on the feature set so all that needs to be done is to select the model that meets your needs. You could also wait til June to see whether the 4K imac panel I've been banging on about appears.

Biges! :D

LG W2420R is A-TW polarized so that would provide the closest experience. Maybe XoR can chime in here, as he has one.

Otherwise the NEC PA241W is also quite good and can do wide gamut and sRGB gamut very well.
