Some new gossip on the next iPhone, which may sport a variant A5X chip and 1 gig RAM. Also, despite earlier claims of a June release now it's back to October again.

As usual it's hard to tell much about the validity, but I'm not surprised that Apple would conceal the prototype in 4/4S casing. You know, in case it gets left lying around at some bar:p

It's going to have the same internals as the ipad I bet.

A5X, LTE, 1GB RAM

I actually have no idea if it will be in a new design though. That should be interesting.

I understand they want to keep the same form factor (3.5" display) to keep backward compatibility with all of their previous accessories (docks and such), but if they don't bump the display size to at least 4", then they're going to piss a whole lot of critics and customers off. They wouldn't even have to change the resolution so devs wouldn't have to change a thing to support it. But in the end, I'm sure they'll sell a record shattering amount regardless of what they change because it's an iDevice, so it will sell regardless of what type of incremental update they do (see iP4 > iP4S).

Not that I wouldn't put it past Apple, but I'd be absolutely shocked if they didn't bump up the screen size to 4". I'd think that would be enough to make alot of people jump ship, but like you said, people love Apple no matter what, so who knows.

I think I'm in the opposite camp: I'd prefer if they DIDN'T change the screen size. I don't like the bulk of the iPhone to begin with (especially if you put any decent cover on it). I'd much rather have a slightly smaller phone rather than going bigger.

They have a problem -

Keep same size, sell billions, let the rumors for a 4" iPhone 6 begin
Increase the size, sell billions, sell millions of new accessories

It must be nice to be Apple.

The only way I'll consider returning to the iPhone is if the 5 has at least a 4" screen.

This sounds right. Add in 4" screen and upgraded camera. Resolution will probably stay the same as current screen.

Upgraded front camera. That's all I ask. What the hell Apple?! Same camera on the new iPad also? Why!? 3G (or 4G) FaceTime too?

Also, I wouldn't mind same form factor again. Screen size is fine for me tbh. It's not a tv, it's a phone (IMO).

The only way I can see the A5X working is if they transition to ~30nm. Chip is much too big otherwise.

I heard it will be released Aug/Sept, but who knows, Apple never has a rock solid release date any year, they are always a different date, it's not locked in stone on the calendar like Christmas :)

Also heard rumors will be named iPhone6 ( for it being the 6th generation iPhone, and running iOS6, and being such a big update for an iPhone, skipping the iPhone5 name, to market it as a huge upgrade )

For Apple to get me back away from the Nexus line of phones I have been buying the last few years I want to see this on the iPhone6 this year;

- 4" or larger screen
- best in class battery life for any smartphone of 2012
- Widgets on the home screen
- LED notification light
- Siri improved and working as smooth and well as the commercials advertise

If Apple can do most of these above features, I will buy it right away.

would a 4" LCD with the iphon4 resolution still be retina? (300+ ppi)

There is no way I can go back to a smaller screen, even if it is 4". I went from an iPhone4 to a 4.3" Charge to a 4.65" Nexus. Even the Nexus feels small or "normal" after using it for a few months. I'm not saying it should be bigger than the Nexus, but 4.3 would be the sweet spot for me.
As far as development support and resolution, Android apps support different resolutions, and the major apps are on both platforms. Seems like a no brainier.

I'm willing to bet money that the iPhone 5 (or will it just be called the new iPhone...?) will have a bigger screen. Why wouldn't Apple want to sell millions of new accessories? They're kind of adopting Intel's tick-tock strategy, new case design (architechture in Intel's case) every 2nd generation.

Totally agree, the iPhone6 due out in September, will for sure have a larger screen, now it could be a small bump up like 3.7" or something, but I would bet on 4", and possibly a hair larger like 4.2" or 4.3", there was a big rumor last month, that LG just signed a big contract for an order of several million 4.3" screens going to Apple.

I don't even think they go above 4.0", which would be the killer for me. Yes, 4" (or even 3.5") is adequate, but I'm decent height with decent sized hands and a 4.6" phone seems about right for me. Heck, even the Galaxy Note seemed OK sized to me, though I think I would prefer 4.6"

Now if only the Android Market would get a few more games :)

It would break all existing apps, and would be yet another resolution iOS devs have to support. And unlike Android, it requires actual dev work on iOS to do that, and is "real" fragmentation.
