Corsair Obsidian 550d?

Well, from my understanding, the front 120mm fans suck air from the side and bottom openings, so you can leave the front panel mounted. Correct me if I'm wrong.

he means the snap-in cover for the 2x120mm fans... but i dont see how that affects aesthetics if you've got the door closed... maybe he does mean the door.

Actually you're both right. I was mistakenly under the impression that the front panel has to be removed for airflow purposes...must have had one of *those* moments.

Thanks for the clarification all.

Can I fit 2 Thermalright TY-140 or TY-141 in front? They are 140mm fans but they have mouting holes for 120mm.

I had the P182 and P280. I think the 550D is a much better quality case. It feels well constructed I the the 550D is also a bit quieter and it cools a bit better...

Ok. Thx for the reply. Guess i'll be going for 2 x 120 in front and 1 x 140 bottom and 1 x 140 rear.

hey guys. just got my 550d yesterday. didnt take any pics, but made a couple of vids. will upload and post links to utube here today.

Hi guys, I'm new here and I would like to ask where and how many fans should I put in this case? i plan to build a new rig using the 550d case. And what brand too for quiet cooling and great airflow. :D I also want it to be quiet and cool as possible.

Agreed. Tho the P280 did a better job cooling my stuff. Fwiw, I'm using 2 SFLEX E in, 1 out, and one on the VenX.

I'm using that fan configuration for an internal exhaust 580 and an i5 760 with no issues. Depending on your config, room temp, and tolerances, you could even get away with quieter fans like sub 1000RPM Noiseblockers.

I'm guessing these has already been answered, but I cannot find it (and I've read the entire thread over the past few months).

Do the 3 stock 120mm case fans included with the 550D come with 3-pin or 4-pin connectors? I remember reading 3-pin only, but wasn't sure if it applied to all 3 fans or not.

I'm planning on using an Asus P8PZ77-V Pro motherboard which has 6x 4-pin fan headers and want to control all 3 stock + 1 extra (bottom) case fans via Asus FanXpert2 (or SpeedFan) using temperature based adjustments. I understand I need 4-pin fans to do this (as the 4th pin is what allows PWM), and I'd rather not spend another $30-40 on replacement fans if I don't have to.

Is it possible to control fan speed on 3-pin fans via voltage modification (versus PWM which I understand is another method). Sorry, tried to research this stuff and cannot find a clear answer.

I also just realized the NH-D14 I bought likely only has 3-pin fan connectors, going to have to crack it open tonight and look as ideally I want all 4 case fans + 2 heatsink fans to be controlled based on a temperature profile so I can have silent desktop use with the noise only ramping up during load.

Thanks

Here it is with all the corsair stuff :)

Its the corsair H60. And it is a bit loud, not alot but their. Its certainly the loudest thing in my system. I may replace it with an air cooler instead...

That's the Corsair H60. Personally, I think it's the best CPU cooler on the market. Pair it with two Noctua F12-PWM fans and its dead silent @ 600RPM. Stays pretty cool and the fans never need to go above 1100RPM at full load to keep temperatures in the 60s.

Whatever keeps the CPU cool, and the fan quiet. I'm running my Noctuas at 600RPM at idle and 1100-1200RPM at full load. Temps vary from high 30s / low 40s to mid 60s. Sure I could get cooler temps but then I would hear the fans.

I'm really troubled with the fans. Especially with the settings, how can I control their speed or how would it automatically change in RPM when the temp goes higher?

I have a stupid question. Really lol. Can I not removed the side panel cover or it would not let the side fan to have air intake? I'm really new to this kind of stuff. D:

If you put fans on the side panel, leaving the side panel cover on would make them almost useless.

What brand of fans do you think should I buy for optimized cooling and quietness? I already considered buying a noctua nf-p12 for my heatsink, even probably single or dual fan for push/pull. Any of you know a good cpu heatsink? I saw the cm hyper212+ and evo and the reviews of it are good but I would like to know if there are any good or probably a better heatsink than that.

What fan setup would you guys suggest? I can't decide whether to use the side or top vent or even both. Is it also good if I go all out noctua fan? XD answers woukd be appreciated.

I'd think intake on the side would be better from temps than using the top. I'm using an H100 in the top though, so the side is closed.

Sorry, but can someone confirm that while a 3-pin fan can connect to an MB header there is no way to control the fan speed RPM? You need to buy a 4-pin (PWM) fan to be able to control the speed?

The SPCR review linked above has the CPU and case fans at 9v and 12v, how did they do it?

Just picked up a Fractal Define R3 to replace my file server's Antec 300. It was on sale ($80) and a lot cheaper than the 550D ($140). I haven't had much time with the R3 so I can't draw too many comparisons, but on first glimpse (1) the hard drive cages on the 550D are far superior but (2) the front door on the R3 with its magnetic clasp was executed better (even though it isn't bi-directional).

I might consider modding the 550D with a few magnets and remove the door clamps on one side. Any suggestion for some low profile magnetic tape or something?

The dudes over in the R3 thread have hacked the thing in very interesting ways, might want to post your door question there? :)

I will get this case in 2-3 days, what brand of quiet/good airflow case and cpu fans should I get? At the moment, I only Noctua which is a quite expensive but good fan. What brands are also good? I was thinking of going out all Noctua fan on my case.

Nobody can confirm that, since it is possible.

SPCR probably connected the fans to some fancontroller with volgate read-out or just a normal DC power supply with voltage control. You remember the kind of powersupply you used in physics class?

Good point, I guess my question is can the Asus P8PZ77-V Pro control 3-pin fans via it's MB fan headers, I will ask in the appropriate place :).

Ordered my 550D yesterday from NCIX (Canadian) for $121.96 with no rebates required, thanks to a pricematch on DirectCanada.com, should be picking it up in a day or two since they have it in stock at my local NCIX.

First question, depends on your motherboard. Check your manual... most motherboards can either control through PWM (preferred) or voltage.

As for the SPCR review, just use a 50 ohm or higher resistor inline to get the voltage drop you're looking for (or use a fan controller/rheostat, or make your own).

Could you link me? I'm a bit lazy to browse all the pages since you didn't say what page contains your post. :D

Does anyone know if the Noctua NH-D14 fits in this case?

Specs:
Height (without fan) 160 mm
Width (without fan) 140 mm
Depth (without fan) 130 mm
Height (with fan) 160 mm
Width (with fan) 140 mm
Depth (with fan) 158 mm

Yes it will fit but there will be clearance issues as they say. It might hit your ram sticks especially if they have big heat spreaders/ Anyway, Asus Maximus Gene V was recently released. Any thoughts of the Noctua NH-D14 fitting on it?
