I hope it's alright for me to post this here, but I wanted to share a tribute video I found of Unreal on Youtube.

It's been at least 4 or 5 years I last played Unreal. The game itself was from 1998 but for me it still is one of the most immersive and atmospheric games I've ever played. I never have been able to get the true same experience or feeling again in other games like Unreal offered.

Played Unreal and other games back then on a 3DFX Voodoo, unforgettable memories. Even with all those great graphics we have now, I would love to go back to those times.

The part where you're in the hallway and the lights close.
Scary stuff.

I just recently got a dedicated server configured and fired up for my friends and I to play on. They were console gamers back then before I met them and converted them to PC gamers. Needless to say this will be their first run through this game. We played up to IVSKran the other night and they're loving the hell out of it. I spent weeks trying to convince them to play it with me and now they're begging me to fire up the server to play some more. :D

Yeah, I remember that part. It was an awesome introduction to a new enemy. Back in those days something like that was really new. Loved how everything slowly went black, and then after a few seconds you would see red flashing lights, hear an alarm, and being attacked while feeling disoriented as you didn't know where the enemy was coming from.

Heh, very nice. :D Great to hear you're all enjoying it.

Another thing I loved about Unreal was the music, it had some of the best music I heard in a game. And every level had its own unique music score.

I always liked the color palette they used. Same thing with ZTN maps for quake2.

A true classic, look how good a texture pack makes this 1998 game look. The reason why is because this game and many others back then were made solely for pc. It shows and it pays off, everything today is dumbed down and looks the same.

OH, man.
I really wished I kept all the old PC games I purchased over the years. I had most all the classics and that one would have been on the top shelf. I remember the reflection and water effects was a first for me.
Very very cool.

It's great to see other people loving Unreal as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. :)

If anyone is interested, you can find the high resolution texture pack (S3TC textures) here (choose high-end textures):

There's also a special D3D10 (DirectX 10) renderer available for Unreal (Gold) and Unreal Tournament which improves the visuals of Unreal, fixes graphical glitches and creates a consistent great look throughout the game, as well as adding new graphical options.

If you don't have a DX10/11 card this OpenGL or D3D9 renderer will also work very well for DX9 cards. It works just the same as the DX 10 renderer, improving performance and visual quality, as well as adding a lot of graphical options for Unreal (Gold) and Unreal Tournament.

This was my first PC game purchase. I loved a CTF mod called RealCTF. The grappling hook was a great feature. Wish the mod would have made it to Unreal Tournament. Good times. I Remember playing with {NBK}Boom. He was damn good player, especially with the ASMD.

One of my all time most memorable gaming moments was stepping out of the crashed ship at the start of Unreal and taking your first look outside. It took my breath away.

One word: Steam. Wait till holiday sales/ summer sales/ even weekend sales, you can genereally pick up bundles for cheap. I got id pack for 30bucks. 3 years ago, with unreal pack for like 20. Dark forcers/Jedi knight series for 15. A used copy of JK2 goes for more than that. They even have some good midweek/daily deals to.

The only bad thing i found out about these classics: If they used redbook audio (quake 1/2, Jedi Knight series, a couple others i cant recall) the publisher didnt upload the music with them. You can get "patches" from steam forum members for respective games to add it back to the game. Also they can be a little quircky running on new OSes and Hardware.

Yeah, I remember that moment as well. I never saw something like that before in a game back then.

I've started replaying Unreal yesterday, and I really have to say that already I'm enjoying it so much. It really gives me that feeling again of something I've been missing in games for a long time.

The Skaarj are still as tough as I remember them. Very agile, fast projectiles and they really avoid your weapons fire very well. Their close-up leaps towards you as well as their fighting moves (for example a 360 degrees spin) with their claws are deadly. When my armor ran out, I had to be very careful before entering a new room or area, looking everywhere if they were hiding or patrolling nearby.

I just finished the Kragijar Mines, and about to enter the Temple of Chizra. I'm really looking forward to it.

I couldn't agree with you more. I've gotten more joy out of playing through Unreal again than I have from practically every game that has come out within the past couple of years. The minimalistic nature of its story telling, requiring the player to investigate what's going on themselves via the translator makes it a truly immersive experience. The combat is fast, challenging, and absolutely unforgiving. No game can possibly be like it today because this new generation of gamers (mainly console playing COD gamers) would not have the patience for it. They like to be spoon-fed their games and have their hands held every step of the way.

I think the game's graphics hold up excellently even to this day, even without HD texture packs. Actually, I kind of prefer the original textures. The HD ones look a little out of place, given the low poly geometry of the game. With the 227 patch adding in pawn shadows, I think the graphics are perfect.

Unreal is one of my all-time favorite games. The single-player was long and varied. Toward the end you ran into some pretty crazy stuff. Graphically that game was unmatched for years, too. It was an automatic install for at numerous systems I've built over the years just to show 'em off. I might be wrong, but it was one of the first games I can recall that had deathmatch bots pre-programmed into the shipping game. They were supported in tons of other games, but rarely out of the box and integrated.
While the UT games were also a blast, I hope that Epic revisits the "real" Unreal universe again someday.

I would rather Epic leave Unreal where it is. They've completely changed as a company and there view points on PC gaming are absolutely horrible. What they had back in the late 90's early 2000's is completely dead. They are totally focused on releasing console games and they don't even care what PC gamers enjoy anymore.

Leave the past in the past.

I bought my first Monster3D card just to play this game with max eye candy for the day!

800x600 resolution!! Woot!

Still a classic and I still replay it now and then.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's great to read everyone's opinions about this game. :)

I made a little progress in Unreal, but not as much as I had hoped as I got stuck in the Ceremonial Chambers, but I was finally able to find the passage leading out of this large temple.

Next stop: the Dark Arena:

One of my defining gaming moments was playing this game on my brand new 4MB Voodoo and stepping out of the ship into the open. As someone else said, that entire sequence took my breath away. I have *never* been that impressed with a game since.

Unreal 1 was amazing, had awesome graphics for it's time, and was a fun and scary single player game, and also CoOp which rocked. Then they made the bad ass UT99, one of the best CTF team games ever made, and then Epic slowly started to go down hill for me, they came out with UT2004, with vehicles which was pretty good not great like the Uneal1 or UT99, and after that they sh!t on the PC Gamers. Fuck Epic now.

Some of my two favorite games of all time were Quake 2 CTF and UT99, both games had stellar multiplayer, CTF then was just so much fun. Haven't found games like that today.

I still play 155/55 LGI CTF from time to time.

Anyone else notice how the textures look sharper than what you find in most games today... and Unreal was meant to be played on a Voodoo1 with 2mb of texture memory.

You should play the game with the high resolution textures, seriously. You haven't seen nothing yet.

I... I never even played Unreal :( I did play Operation Na Pali mod for UT though. Loved it.

I'll try to play Unreal this year. There's probably a way to make it work in 3D, that'd be sweet.

ONP is freaking awesome. I used to run a server, well technically still got the server just have it shut down because I got tired of maintaining it.

Just finished a run through Unreal with 3 of my friends who have never played it before. They absolutely loved it and are screaming to play through RTNP now.

Unreal has aged like fine wine. It still has just as much charm as it did a whopping 14 years ago. :D

The opening real time fly through demo of the castle was enough to make most peolple scream their "O" face.

I remember when Unreal came out....bought my first Voodoo 2 card for glide goodness. I really didn't care much for the weapons other then the Flak cannon. But then I found a mod called Serpentine that replaced all the weapons with real world guns and grenades. It was pretty fun playing with those and you could even chamber a round and then top off the magazine which was a rare thing to be able to do back in those days.

Small Youtube demo
I didn't dig too deep but there isn't much to showcase the mod.

Ah yes, UT Goty edition, and after seeing a mate play it I just had to buy it, and it was my first PC game, and a good way to start off.
Those were the days, insert disc, install, adjust settings and play....no CD key required.
Did anyone else get the ClusterRedeemer.umod to play with ?.
I think you could adjust how many mini bombs it set off, and really made your gfx card work up a sweat. :D
I still play it now and again when I want to relax and have some fun and take a break from BF3, and have quite a few map packs, mods for weapons in storage.
Trying to play it online using dial up was a bit of a nightmare though. :D
To me, it was and still is a good fun game.
