Hello my fellow PC gamers,

Officially, yesterday was the first day of the Quake2World Open Beta. A short description from the official site:

Quake2World is a Free, standalone first person shooter video game. Our goal is to bring the fun and excitement of straightforward old-school death-match gaming to a more contemporary platform, and perhaps to a new generation of gamers. Quake2World is multiplayer-only. There is no single-player or offline gameplay mode. If you have no Internet and no friends, Quake2World might not be for you.

I've been in contact with the development team for a short few months, while the game has been under development for several years. For my personal description, it's an amalgam of what made Quake 2 fun inside of a modernized engine (it's a heavily modified Quake 2 engine that incorporates dozens of engine improvements, such as native md3 support, per-pixel-lighting, shaders and in-game browser)

Minimum requirements fit pretty much machine built in the last decade:

  • Windows XP, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Recent GNU/Linux
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 1GHz CPU
  • NVidia GeForce 8500, ATI Radeon HD 3850

Currently it is under heavy development and the team is always looking for new members, particularly mappers and texture artists. The team invites everyone interested in some old school FPS gaming in a modern engine to give Q2W a try.

The best way to contact the team to leave feedback, criticisms, ideas and bug reports is on IRC @ #quetoo on Freenode.

Once you download the game, you have to run the Update.bat file that pulls all of the game content from the content servers to your local machine via rsync. If you want to make any permanent edits to your configuration, use the quake2world.cfg file (in Windows, it's located at My Documents\My Games\Quake2World\default\quake2world.cfg, OS X and Linux should be in your home dir ( ~/.quake2world ) )

Seeya in game! :D

I PM'd Steve and Majordomo to get it on the News but I guess post-April Fools News is more important :-\

i can't get it to launch on Win7 64bit using either 64bit or 32bit clients

on launch:
command prompt, in-game menu for a split second, command prompt again with a lot of failure errors

:(

edit: apparently you need to use Update.bat file first.
updating now...

i should have read the instructions! http://quake2world.net/books/documentation/installation-maintenance

ok, tried it out a bit. everything looks like lasers... and i'm sad they didn't keep the old Q2 gun sounds. perhaps a sound/projectile pack in in order :)

Looks like i need to tweak a bit with my office PC. massive input lag. might have to upgrade my 9500gt to SLI ! :D

I think I was gettin smoked  Got a u3011 here at work and my POS appeared to be having trouble at native. lol Badass though, none the less. I'll be back once I clear this false positive outta the AV.

What kind of textures are they looking for? "retro" or modern? The site isn't very well laid out and it isn't stated clearly!

From the looks of other maps, a little of both. They're recreating the old popular Q2 maps and bringing new ones along.

Updated the Glenridge servers today with the latest code;

  • Enhanced player movement (notably movement walking up/down stairs)
  • Blaster damage increased
  • Other small bug fixes

If anyone wants to organize a match later on, let me know

ID needs to relase a Quake2 Live.

yeah quake 2 multiplayer was always my favorite MP experience. Q3 just felt too hectic and the "sports" theme to it was a huge turn off as well.

Thanks,

but I cant connect to any of the servers. Says there all shut down.

All of my servers are up and running AFAIK... anyone else having problems?

Did you run the Update.bat before launching the quake2world executable?

Quake2World beta v.1617 now available.... be sure to run your Update.bat !

  • Fixed ammunition problem where correct amount of ammo was not given to player upon pickup
  • Fixed weapons not dropping upon death bug
  • Fixed bug in water areas where player would not sink and occasionally would stick to walls
  • Some OS X-centric directory fixes

Why would I want this over Quake Live?

  1. It's free (QL is too, but free is good)
  2. Supported by the community with new maps, models, skins, etc. are produced regularly to keep rotations fresh (http://quake2world.net/blogs/jdolan/help-wanted)
  3. Is actively being developed on a DAILY, if not HOURLY basis
  4. Runs on just about anything (maybe even Raspberry Pi..?)
  5. Q2W is an iteration of Quake 2, with very similar movement and weapon behaviors, whereas QL is closer to Quake 3 Arena
  6. Engine enhancements such as per-pixel-lighting, shader support and probably a dozen other things I can't remember at the moment

resets my keybinds every time I launch and I can't seem to locate the external config file, what gives?

Config file should be in your Quake2World/default directory as quake2world.cfg. Check out the original post for the locations of this file. It should keep all settings that you set while in-game. So are you rebinding something while in q2w, quit, and when you reopen it, the bind is gone? Or did it rebind back to its original key?

Some patch notes for v.1623..

  • Fixed demo playback problems
  • Tweaked ambient light on entities
  • Included jumping animation when pushing off the bottom of water-filled surface and other water-related tweaks

As always, update.bat that puppy and get in the game! The Glenridge servers are updated daily to reflect all new changes (as I am in charge of them), the Q2W.net and Ikarus EU servers are also updated regularly for our European friends

dark shade, quake2world.cfg does not exist. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? :p
but really though how the hell could I not have a config file...that doesn't make any sense.
anyway all I mainly need to rebind is mwheeldown for rox and mwheelup for rails.

Hmm yeah without the quake2world.cfg the binds will not stick (the engine has base binds without the .cfg file so the game operates even without one, the quake2world.cfg is loaded after the engine binds so any binds in the .cfg file take precedent)

Run your update.bat again to see if the quake2world.cfg gets downloaded. If not I can pastebin a default copy for you to use.

I ran it just before I made that post to see if maybe if it would add it, but no go.
If you could upload one that would be great, thanks

played it -- there is nobody in the entire world online to play with.

Even if there was -- to be honest it's no where near as polished as Quake Live -- the price is right though. I realize this is something project/community driven thing but right now Quake Live blows this thing outta the water. And thats factoring in im a MUCH bigger fan of Quake 1 and 2 vs the Quake 3 arena style that's on QL.

Considering QL is a fully released game by the original developers of the Quake series, and this has been in developmental beta stage for 4 days, you'd be right. ;) We're gathering more people together to play (trying to get the word out is the hardest part), tried getting a News plug here but no go.

If you want to play with real people I'm sure there will be more on tonight.

I thought you said it had been in development for years in your original post...

It has been in development for years, by a small community based team with limited resources ;)

I think we may need to send out Public Service Announcements as to what "Beta" stages entail.

  • Not Polished
  • Buggy
  • Not Finished
  • Playable

If folks expected the beta of Q2W to compete with Quake Live then the expectations are far too high. It's an unfinished, in-development game with hourly code commits and constant changes. For instance, the blaster has a new skin in this next release and I think you'll find it 'familiar' and much more pleasing to the eye

iteration of Quake with (what I feel like are) the best aspects of QW, Q2, and Q3A

I felt this too. Look of Quake, weapons from all three iterations and a speed somewhere in between the three.

The only populated server at the time had five players and I had a ~100ms ping (<50ms avg in other games) :/

Still a satisfying nostalgia trip.
