Next Xbox could come without a disc drive

compression used by microsoft to fit the same exact game that was on a blu-ray disc on a DL DVD and it wasn't because the PS3 version of the game was better or anything. they were the exact same game, same audio, same graphics, same resolution.

I dont know anything about the compression, but this isn't entirely true. Some 360 games now come on multiple discs. Say what you will about it but that just seems wrong these days to a lot of gamers.

I just hope digital download will be an option for all games for those who have the internet connection...

Companies are digging graves for themselves.
If the next consoles don't have optical drives and lock used games = less console sales.

Until there are no limits on Internet bandwidth like the old days, I don't see the coming gen of consoles being without optical drives.

Lots of people still don't have Internet and lots of parents won't download games for their kids. they would feel better buying the actual disc.

Also if you are reaching your bandwidth limit, would you really want to wait for the month to finish and start the new month to download a 20gig game that will eat up 30-40% of your bandwidth?

God I miss the 90s

even without a disc drive you can still buy games at gamestop or walmart.

they would just be a game disc box like you have now with a game key inside.

input key and game downloads its simple.

And half a day later you can play it lol

Disc drives are mandatory for the near future, with crappy Internet through most the country, backwards comparability, people using their (insert system) as their (insert movie format) player, no used game market, and the inability to just play your game at your buddies place, we need some format of physical media, and discs are cheapest. 4x or 8x blu ray is the likely candidate.

And that still wont address bandwidth cap issue.. Game release on the last tuesday of the month which happens to be last day of the month and your at 98 of your 100GB cap. Game is 8GB. Are you going to stop and wait a day while everybody else is playing?

If you already going to have a box at retail, im sure it wont cost much more to put a disc in it. Thats one of the advantages about disc, cheap to mass manufacture.

This next gen will have disc drives. Disc still has to many advantages for most people. I see an online store coexistiing with retail for next gen. Its pretty much that way now on the three systems.

Interesting rumor about going with some sort of cart/card based storage. It would almost certainly be more expensive to manufacture, but they could totally kill the second-hand market by putting a small amount of write-only flash on the card. Publishers might be willing to eat the higher cost if it meant more new sales.

Price being equal. I'd prefer to buy games on SD cards over disks because the load times would be better, they wouldn't have a chance of scratching, and they wouldn't make noise when reading.

Most likely this rumor is talking about the rumored Xbox Loop, which is a dedicated Roku or AppleTV-like device that has the Xbox name on it. It will likely tap into existing media features, and support XBLA games and perhaps the XBox Cloud (like OnLive) service. No optimal media.. because its a form factor platform, likely to be priced ~$150 to reach another market.

MS will then announce/release a true successor to the 360 with optical media.

Settle down people.

Look at the vita right now, it's the first console to have same day digital for every game, and a card based physical release. Same day, and every digital version is 5$ cheaper. Even at this, where digital would benefit a handheld more than a console because you wouldn't be carrying cards with you, card sales are still up. Were getting there, but were not digital only ready yet

I can see them putting a disc drive. But only for Blu-ray/CD Playback. Cause with the constant increase in flash media storage capabilities. I'm sure microsoft will be able to come up with a proprietary technology for their consoles that the games will be on some sort of Flash Media (SD, etc.) and will be locked to read only. And then once this happens, Sony will come running up from behind doing the same thing with their Memory Stick Flash Media. Cause right now, we can buy a 16 GB SD Card online for around $20. So Imagine what Microsoft can get them for in bulk, and then they can put the games on them while having the cards locked to read-only. And they will have the games priced @ $70. And because they will have phased out production of newer titles for xbox 360, ps3, etc. They will force us into purchasing the new console and we all know that we all will give in and they know this, which is why they know that no matter what they do & how much they charge. Video Games to us people who play them are like nicotine to cigarette smokers. It does not matter how much they raise the prices, people say they are gonna quit or they can live without b/c it is too expensive. But eventually, we will give in.

Even in bulk, it would not come close to how cheap it is to manufacture optical disk. Plus capacity of blu ray is 25gb single layer with mulit layered capability. Also printing of optical media is faster than "SD" type media, so developers wont need as big of a lead in time for day one sales, have issues with reprint because the game sold more than expected, or wont cost them as much if they game doesnt sell and they have to much stock left. Has most people forgotten the lessons Nintendo learned with N64? While the N64 was a great system, in my opionion better than playstation, it didnt do as well becasue cartridge cant match the economics of scale optical could. catridge/SD media is fine for portables, where size and toughness matters a lot more.

Exactly. I think 8x BluRay, while dreamy, is pretty ideal for what we'll see next gen.
