Not that old, 30ish, Nintendo Golden Era types. I have nothing to do with this podcast but I figured there are some people out there who will probably enjoy it. They just bring up and discuss 8-bit/16-bit era games over course of the hour

http://www.1up.com/do/minisite?cId=3156908

They have some pretty cool interviews as well. They had the guys on from Tengen discussing how they tried to circumvent Nintendo and some other fun guests. Any other listeners out there?

Me

Its funny most people think video games are for kids.

I should show them screenies of the pot plants in the first hitman game and the guy snorting coke.

BTw I have my old NES still sitting in my closet. Thinkning of selling it on ebay.

ill be 32 this year but i dont feel old, saw a thread on steam skyrim fourms and some ppl in there 6's 70's playing skyrim lol, which is totaly bad ass, still hard for me to picture though cause my dad is in late 50's close to 60 and all he knows how to do it turn on a PC lol one of the smartest guys i know to he just dont know how to use a PC, my mom can though

ill be playing games still though when im 70+ lol

retronauts is the shit!! I like that Jeremy Parish is no longer the host. The Tengen episode is one of my favorites as well. If you like this podcast you should check out retrogaming roundup (this one is long as hell cause its like a once a month deal, 5-6 hours long! :O good for roadtrips) Retroforce Go! is decent but one of the hosts has the most annoying voice ever.

Discovered this podcast when I got into video game collecting a couple years ago. So many episodes of retronauts!

If you are a fellow collector or if you have some old games for sale/trade please PM me! :D

I'm sure we have this same thread every 6 months or so :p

I'm 30. Thing that drives me nuts about "retro-gaming" is that it is fairly console-centric. The last console we had in our home was an NES and I didn't play it that much as I preferred things like Wing Commander, Space Quest, Ultima, or later on Fallout, on the computer.

On that note, After naming those games, I don't see why something as simple or stupid as Legend of Zelda would make everyones top 10 games. Damn console gamers. :D

Its just a matter of audience. A lot more people played consoles than PC games. Hell, I am and have been an avid pc gamer for about 15 years now but there just arent as many people in the same boat. If I go somewhere and ask about Baldurs Gate, I will get mostly blank stares. If I then mention the speed scooter level of Battletoads, some people are going to know what I'm talking about.

I resent you calling Legend of Zelda stupid. Simple it may be, but also a fantastic game.

35.

I don't like console games, as you might guess, given my job here. I don't agree that Zelda is a fantastic game. It's a mindless romp full of endlessly repeated gaming moments.

8-bit Atari & Commodore era here!

M.U.L.E. rules!

;)

Ah, I thought you meant Retronauts threads (which is what I made this for), I get it ;D

Ah ok, my bad, I'll stop going off topic then ;)

On topic, yeah, I'm not into super-retro-ancient games, but I occasionally go back to the early NES days as well as some late 80s/early 90s PC games which is around about where my gaming life began. I'm only 26, but my eldest sibling was 8 years older than me so I'd be that annoying little brother wanting to get them off the computer/NES so I could play my games :p

I disagree sir. Maybe you were too old when you played/were exposed to it?? Please explain.

I had a nice conversation about MULE with the most random person recently. The cashier at the Palace Station convenience store near the lobby. She still has her NES and still plays it on there. I told her she should play it on PC with friends multiplayer. She seemed excited when I told her she could do that. :)

NICE!

Who would have thought of M.U.L.E as a pickup line... :D

Seriously, the multiplayer version which came out is not bad actually.

The original Atari 4 player version was awesome in tournaments... Sorta like a pre-cursor to the LAN party back in the day...

Hmm, looks like I'm going to be pulling out the old 8-bit now...

Agreed. I would say to them, "Grow up and enjoy life." Clearly they're out of the loop on a healthy balance and outlook on reality and life. ;\ Sure, I would agree that video games shouldn't be everything or anywhere near a dominant portion of life, but I wouldn't go all out to say video games are 100% outright an abomination and childish, immature thing. THAT in itself goes to show a lack of maturity, that there is possibly some pride, and that the person is internally stuck up [with themselves] or butthurt or something.

Ill be 40 in a couple months and have been playing video games since my Atari 2600 (which I still have) in 1982 then moved up to a Commodore 64 in 1984 and played that thing into the 90's!

I remember when Electronic Arts' logo was EOA for some reason and loved playing the original Castle Wolfenstein when it wasn't a FPS.

In a lot of ways, video games are for kids. They are a frivolous waste of time when most of us have more important things to be doing. I still love them, but I cant really argue the point.

argh! the same can be said for every other form of entertainment!

I'm 41 and I actually started on green screen games at my dads office in the 1970s and then some CPM machines and the 2600 > C64 > Amiga.

I had half a wall in my bedroom covered with those old EA game folders - I think the logo was Cube/Sphere/Pyramid more than EOA - but that's how it looked.

My dad is 63 and when he's not working, he does like to blow off steam and play the Battlefield games. He's also played a lot of Tribes and Guild Wars.

The biggest problem for him is that he is pretty old school in that he won't hardly spend money on himself. His gaming system was getting very out dated and would not run BC2 when it came out. I upgraded my system mainly so I could give him my old i5/750 motherboard and RAM - then I coordinated with my sister and my mom and we got him a case and power supply for Christmas and once he had most of a system together, he was able to justify buying a few things to finish it out...

Why would you want to do that? Dont! That was a mistake I regret the most when I got rid of mine + all the games years ago. Now recollecting them with these RIDICULOUS ebay prices (and no oldschool games in flea markets around here) is a pain in the ass.

Turned 28 just month ago. Already feeling the age creep up on me... Not literally, just the sudden unexplained growth of my (beer) belly, which wasnt there just a two years ago, is alarming me. :D

I agree with you. 34 here and I grew up in the 80's playing consoles and even as a kid I thought Zelda was boring and repetitive. Run around hacking stuff and collecting little puzzle pieces or solving some puzzles. Give me Final Fantasy, SMB, Castlevania, etc anyday.

Ridiculous. Just because you're not being productive that doesn't mean "its for kids". Its a pastime just like fishing, playing golf, stamp collecting or whatever. I spend 60 hours a week being "productive" at my 2 jobs. When I get some down time, I want to kick back and enjoy some gaming.

Agreed. It isn't necessary to be productive in your life 100% of the time. What is the point in that? Yeah you could probably always do something but without being able to enjoy life and your hobbies what are you doing all that crap for? I'm 33 and I love playing games. I prefer PC games but I'll play on any platform as long as the game is good. My parents swore I'd grow out of it. It seems obvious they were wrong about that.

I'm 35 and hell yeah I remember playing space quest, and Ultima. I had Wing commander as well, but never got into it.

I think my favorite oldie but goodie was the kings quest series (I think I started with 3, where you were a wizzards apprentice) - I spent many an hour on all the old sierra games.. including leisure suit larry, lol

most of the current pc gamers have no idea that we used to have to put a 5 1/4" dos disk in to boot the computer and then switch to your game disk.. hard drives? whats that? lol :)

Does 27 count? :D . I play PC games with my Uncle who is 40. He is into games like Skyrim and the like. My dad gave up gaming when he was in his 30s. I do not foresee me doing the same.

30ish predates the nintendo golden era, I was playing on an atari console and commodore 64 well before Nintendo became commonplace.

Hmmm, I dont know. I rarely feel satisfaction playing video games that I get from other types of activities. For instance, I wanted to go play Mass Effect 3 all day on Sunday. It was a nice spring day so I took the camera out, went for an 8 mile walk and got a bunch of pictures. I feel a lot better overall going out and taking those pictures than I would if I had played Mass Effect all day.

I guess its a matter of perspective. I would say that video games/television/movies are all in the same vein. I guess it doesnt really matter though if you are happy. I dont want to offend anyone either. I had a 4 year MMO addiction so my perspective is a bit different on the entire issue.

My point is that it isn't necessary to be productive all the time. You need to take time to enjoy life and all that you work for. Sometimes that may mean going and working in the garage. Other times it may mean sitting on your ass and playing a game all day, eating pizza and only suspending gaming to use the bathroom. The problem is that many people never find the right balance with their activities. I'm not any different. I've often spent too much time doing one thing or another.

Cool, I'll be 30 in two months. We have much to discuss.

Like a poster above me said, 30 predates Nintendo's golden era. I am happy that I was a part of it though, although my first gaming system was an Atari.

Taking a hike all day, fine tuning your car's engine all day, gaming all day, running a marathon all day, throwing a BBQ with a dozen people all day...

All can be considered unproductive from a financial standpoint...

However...

A hike will improve muscles & reduce stress.

Fine tuning a car engine will improve your dexterity and problem solving skills.

Gaming improves your focus, concentration and fine motor skills.

Running a marathon will improve your ego and stamina.

Having a BBQ is a good social event to enhance social standings.

Excess in any of these can be bad vs others...

Same league? Ultima is probably the best Western RPG series there is (until they jumped the shark with 8 and 9), Space Quest and Wing Commander need no introduction, any proper gamer knows who Roger Wilco is, or who the Kilrathi are.

While Zelda may have sold more, I don't see how it is in the same league as the games I listed, its just lacking in content, even for the time, considering Ultima 1-4 were also on the NES.

I was a super nerd and had the fancy "robot" second player for the nes, where you had to spin up the gyros and set them on the buttons, lol, anyone else play with that? I still have my nes but not my robot. :(

oh and my atari 2600 was one of the early ones - it had wood paneling. I would play space invaders till the cows came home. I wish I still had that.

I'm getting dangerously close to 35 and play as much as I ever have.
I jumped on the gaming train back in the Atari days, although the first console I ever owned was the NES.
It's pretty amusing how targeted we actually are. A good chunk of nostalgia (Kid Icarus for instance) games are aimed right at us.

Wow, I'm the oldest on this thread so far, 44. I suspect there are far older people than me on [H] still doing their stuff, but just a little slower than when they were - or in my case, a lot slower - I was once a UK Atari 2600 VCS championship finalist and now I get beaten online by just about anyone :)

MULE does rule... but then so did Paradroid, or Lunar Jetman or Rebelstar Raiders or Elite or Wizball or Lord of Midnight... the list could go on a while!

Anyway, thanks for the link, will take a look.
