sounds like a good upgrade?

i plan on keeping my i7 for a long period of time so is it worth it?

i plan on overclocking and getting some new TIM in a little bit so might as well upgrade yeah!!!!

also is it worthwhile for the extra 2 cores? i do a lot of video encoding

I just went 920 to i7-970 chip only cost me $450 sealed in box. I also encode video and it was worth it for me.

not saying how much money as i can see none are on the market right now.

but if i sold my i7 975 i would probably really have to pay ~200 bucks for a used 980X

What about a 970 or 980? Do you really need an extreme edition one?

Will you be overclocking it?

i will eventually overclock it.

would a 970 be a set down? the only thing i heard great about the 975EE edition is the multiplier advantage. but i'm not very educated in that area to know what it can do for me.

i highly doubt i can find a 980 but and a 980X is more of a common chip so i might as well shoot for the stars

I would look for a 970 because the 980 is still going for like $600 retail and the EE unless used forget about it.

The only think that would worry me about the 975EE is those tend to be older steppings.

And sometimes a new stepping will overclock just as much example a 920 D0

what is not used on this forum and is passed on? LOL

anyways yeah if i ever see one come around i will nab it.

so how much does a 970 cost compared to a 980X i mean i'm buying it used either way

Start checking craiglist,ebay etc

I got a brand new 970 for $450 and seen them as low as $400. I've not seen any used 980x for sale last I checked.

yeah the 980X has been hiding from me.

if i sold my i7 975 i could do a straight trade for a 970 + cash on their end hopefully.

but anyways i'll keep searching thanks!

For what it's worth, I've been seriously considering selling my 980x lately (among other parts). Ever since I started my career, I don't have the time to deal with this crazy impossible-to-move-anywhere desktop of mine, nor do I do any of the stuff I originally needed it for .. *on a laptop*

yeah desktop rigs are impossibly to lug around to the next state. but if your within the same state yeah thats fine. but if your moving to another state, you've got a problem.

it'll be a hassle if its watercooling also. ugh the horror.

Cooler master Cosmos-S RC-1100 case
Water cooled Core i7 980x @ 4.2GHz
Water cooled 2 x GTX 480 SLI @ 890/1780/2101, GTX 260 for the occasional PhysX

Sounds portable to me =)

haha it sounds portable but it is stupid heavy.

you would have to flush out everything in order to make it light.

radiator + case = heavy the rest is pretty simple after you take out the hard drives
