Mass Effect 3 Discussion Thread

Ugh, your one of those. This can work if you stay in a sniper's field of fire because they can help keep you from being overwhelmed. Most of the people I've seen who play this way die a lot. Many people treat the game as "run and gun" or "run and melee" which often gets them killed on anything but the bronze challenge level and even then they die more than they should. I swear most multiplayer games are filled with people who have never heard of a defensive position, supressive fire, field of fire, sticking together, etc. Which is odd because in first person shooters I tend to run and gun quite a bit because I'm good at it, though my KT ratio isn't that great. I do usually get more straight up kills than others. With Mass Effect 3, I play the multiplayer like I do the single player. I stick to cover when possible and melee only as a last resort. I pick the best defensive positions and stay to those only moving when I have to.

As a result I don't die very often. In fact on bronze I usually don't die at all and when I do it's on the last wave.

The valiant is one of the better sniper rifles in the game. That is aside from the Black Widow. The Black Widow is only slightly heavier but it does a considerable amount of damage comparatively. And the N7 Valiant is far more damaging than most of the other sniper rifles in the game save for the Javelin, M-98 Widow and the Black Widow. The Mantis may do slightly more or about the same but it's single shot where as the N7 Valiant holds three shots. I started using the M-90 Indra last night in single player just to try it out. Apparently it and the M-13 Raptor are more like assault rifles with increased accuracy and a scope already attached with two free mod slots. They don't give you that satisfying one shot kill with an exploding head, but you can keep guys at range with it. Add the concentration mod to it and the M-90 Indra is more effective than I ever thought it would be. Sadly though, I really liked the M-29 Incisor in ME2 but in ME3 it sucks. They made it even weaker it seems. Still good for shields, but you don't encounter shields often on normal mode and in the harder modes, it lacks the punch you need to do anything but wear down shields.

it's true that i build my biotics as glass cannons but i don't need snipers watching over my shoulder, i just work better if i don't get surrounded. I do a good job not letting enemies flank me, and controlling the crowd, i just hate a nice juicy warp getting wasted by a headshot or a freaking overload when there are other enemies to shoot. you give me a corner of the map with my fair share of spawns and cover my back; i'll make sure none of them make it over to bother you.

otherwise, i have a salarian infiltrator that i use the valiant on, good times. plays pretty conventionally as a sniper/infiltrator. other than that, i just recently unlocked krogan sentinel and he's a frigging blast. with the widow and geth shotgun he's perfect. good from long range with heavy weapons, no cooldowns to worry about, and on bronze difficulty or in a room full of unshielded enemies. go nuts with the headbutts

What i will say i hate the most is that i choose quickgame with all random settings. i hate that if i happen to have a bronze character selected and show up in a gold difficulty game, i get insta-kicked. never mind that i have an N7 rating over 100 and that i have plenty of gold chars...insta kick

Alrighty! Just got back home with my copy of ME3 and it is installing as we speak. Wife and kid are in bed, got my Carcharias headset plugged in and Ive got a 12 pack of Yuengling in the fridge with one already open sitting next to me. This is the most stoked Ive been for a game since Final Doom in 1996! Also the first time I paid $60 for a game! Got a brand new G700 just for the occasion too. Gonna be a long night folks. Got a feeling Ill see the sun rise.

Enjoy yourself! :D

Indeed, have fun MacLeod. You're in for a treat.

I'm curious, how in the hell would the story carry on without Mordin?? I'm really curious how they would write their way around it were he dead. Anybody know?

I didn't play that way, but I believe they replace him with another Salarian scientist.

*spoilers*!!

Damn, I chose the Geth as an ally over the Quarian's. When the fleet is destroyed and she throws herself off the cliff, I almost couldnt believe it. I was genuinely sad and regretted my decision. I dont remember playing many games where I have sat at a decision menu for a full minute wondering what to do as the answer isnt always clear and right. She was my favorite female character in the series and it was tough to see her go. I havent played many games that got that type of emotional response from me. Im sure I will hate the ending but the gaming experience is really excellent so far.

^This is one of the first video games I can remember that actually made me feel depressed.

get your rep high next time you can save both

Thats good to know. My rep bar is about 95% full, I am surprised that wasnt enough? I assumed it happened because I sided with the Quarians all the way up until the decision was to be made.

hmmm...finally saved up enough for the black widow. Tried it out and am kinda disappointed. Sure, the power is terrific and the firing rate is reasonable considering...but the weight is just a little bit too high to be worth it. I love being able to rattle off incinerate in between sniper rounds.

Are those 3 guns the only ones that will be for sale via the specter requisitions terminal, or will more guns become available later?

If I wait to buy ME3 will they ever include DLC in the original purchase or will I have to buy it separately no matter what?

ME 2 still has no GOTY edition or anything of the sort. I would not bet on it for a while.

I read (I think on this forum) thatt the DLC sales of ME2 did pretty well. I doubt there will be incentive to make a GOTY edition.

On my second playthrough and I just discovered that the upgraded Carnifex handgun is a frakkin' beast! I'm one-shotting Cerberus troops--even Guardians--in the head with this thing.

How did I just now discover this?!

I don't remember where I got it at, sorry.

I'm pretty sure I upgraded it to level IV so far, in Normandy's shuttlebay.

EDIT: Mass Effect Wiki says you find it in the Ex-Cerberus Scientists mission on Arrae, or purchase from Kassa Fabrications on the Citadel.

Carnifex is found in the mission where you rescue the ex-Cerberus scientists. If you missed it, it should be available in one of the citadel shops.

yea towards the end during that cerberus refugee mission where you meet up with jacob, on the way out to the roof.

it's like the handgun version of the saber rifle, pretty absurd like basically the same exact stats with less weight and fewer rounds. I prefer the saber though, since you can buff accuracy with the damper mod, and I rather have ironsights than scope. this makes it a beast with even more ammo, and accurate enough for both hip/sniper range if you're good with irons. tons of fun for infiltrator especially if you're not into the scope slowmo, just keep toggling cloak and own everything in sight at full speed.

The Black Widow is pretty good I think. At least for soldiers as weight is really a non-issue for them. Sure you don't get to use adrenaline rush often, but I rarely need it either. Classes more dependant on their powers such as vanguards and sentinels may find the weight trade off to be too high a price to pay for the power. The M-11 Wraith is actually a pretty good shotgun because it's more or less a slightly more powerful M-22 Eviscerator. The M-77 Paladin is the worst of the bunch as it isn't much more powerful than the M-6 Carnifex, but it holds two less shots.

On a first playthrough with a given save, I rarely buy anything but the Black Widow from the Spectre terminal. I pickup the other weapons on subsequent playthroughs just to have them all. But by the time I've got enough to by the M-11 Wraith after buying the Black Widow, I'm pretty close to getting the Geth Plasma shotgun which is a better shotgun all around as far as I'm concerned. So while the M-11 Wraith is a decent shotgun, there isn't a real incentive for me to get one, much less use it.

Just curious, as I haven't played MP yet - does adrenalin rush work exactly the same in MP as SP? Just wondering how that would work.

As much as I've played ME3, I can't really say. I rarely use it in single player or multiplayer. I've hit it before in multiplayer and it seemed to work pretty much the same, but for a much shorter duration. Since it's a time dialation effect, I wonder how that works in a mutliplayer setting? Does it slow things down for you, then resync the game to the rest of the players?

I'm going to go find out right now. That's bothering me.

Interesting, so it does work the same...you're wondering the same thing I am. Seems like you'd have to do some weird juggling with the code to make that work.

The dialation effect isn't as strong, but I don't have as high an adrenaline rush rank in MP as I do in the SP game. I tend to favor the solider class quite a bit because I like having all the guns. So I tend to pick heavier weapons which kill my power recharge times. So in SP, I rarely use adrenaline rush. In multiplayer I favor the infiltrator. (Which has a permanent time dialation effect when looking down the scope of a sniper rifle.) A soldier can only have two weapons in multiplayer which really negates the best advantage of the class in general. In the regular game a Shepard / Solider has a different gun for every type of situation. Other classes deal with situations in a number of other ways. For example: A sentinel has biotic attacks which covers them in situations where they may not be appropriately armed to deal with a particular adversary.

It's a shame I don't know how to use the Twitter. Apparently the twitterer "Mass Effect" said the DLC won't be released in April, but the announcement will. I absolutely hate when companies do that.

I'm hoping for an expansion. $29.99 for an extra 15-20 hours of gameplay or something like that would be pretty sweet.

This is actually a good sign. It means they probably won't just package some re-edited cutscenes or some previously made content and call it a day. They are going to have to work a bit harder to deliver. They are probably figuring out what direction to go and they'll announce their overall plan in April.

And more than likely, if we are lucky we could see something as large as the Shadow Broker DLC which will probably run us about $10.

Has anyone been able to get SSAA working in this with a 6950 at 1920x1200? I've tried forcing it through CCC, copying a dll, making the registry changes that supposedly work for 1680x1050 and none of them work.

Actually, adrenaline rush does pretty much work the same way.

I'm trying to work out how that would work in my head and it's bugging me. Obviously the other players don't notice the time dilation, so how does it function? Then again, maybe the enemies slow down for other players too...how else would it work? Argh...

I've been wondering something about reapers and I can't find a definite answer: does an entire harvested species get processed into a single reaper? Or are there multiple reapers from each species? I guess there would have to be multiple reapers, because I think the protheans were the only spacefaring race at the time of the last harvest. Which would mean only one new reaper in the last harvest. Maybe that's how it works. Anyone know?

If anyone is experiencing a similar issue:

I was finally able to enable AA by using the Edge-Detect filter in CCC instead of Normal.

Negative. The Protheans were simply the dominant race of their cycle. They uplifted some races, but they were generally second class citizens. All of which eventually called themselves Prothean according to Javik. (Which explains different concepts in the Prothean's appearance.) As for the human reaper, it is unknown why they chose to do this. All other Reapers have been various sized craft from the 160m long destroyers to the 2km+ ships like Sovereign and Harbinger. It stands to reason the human / prothean style Reaper was to be closer to the 160m Reapers.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I'm guessing this was actually a new venture for the Reapers. I say this because all the Reapers we've seen to date follow the same basic design with the human form Reaper being the only exception. It may have something to do with the fact that Shepard's actions led to the destruction of Sovereign. Thus it may have been decided that a Reaper in that form would have been a good choice. And actually, for decimating planets like Earth, something with the dexterity and movement capabilities of a human would have been devastating. Possibly much more so than the typical slug-scorpion style Reapers. For all we know the latter are simply made to mock the appearance of a form of life long since forgotten. Oddly, they actually resemble these from Star Trek the Next Generation in a way. I bring this up as it is important to note that the creatures in question were sentient. Though one oddity is the fact that this human form Reaper had eyes similar to a Protheans rather than a human. I have no explanation for this, but it's possible that these Reaper forms are somewhat unique and only vaguel resemble the life forms they are modeled after.

All I can figure is that you end up out of sync with the rest of the team for a split second, and then it resyncs you to the rest of the group when the time dialation effect stops. One thing I noticed is that the duration seems shorter, and the dialation is less pronounced. Then again I don't have the skill maxed out either so that may be the issue.

I didn't notice time slowing down at all in MP with adrenaline rush, if that's what you guys are talking about. I had it up to level 6.

I think there may be some bugs with it. Sometimes I don't notice the slowdown either but it goes into cool down and I get the auditory noises for it. Othertimes it works like the single player but with shorter duration.

Had the easiest streak of Silver matches last night. They were all on Firebase Giant against Cerberus. Team consisted of Salarian Infiltrator (me), Quarian Infiltrator, and 2 Asari Adepts. We bunkered up in the raised fire control center to the extreme right of the spawn.extraction point. Both Infils took cover at the top of the ramp while the 2 adepts were on the otehr side of the office covering the lower approach.

The only enemies that ever set foot in the fire control room were cloaked Phantoms, which would quickly be stasised and sniped. The waves were easy since aggro split pretty evenly between us and it was easy to switch positions and cover each other if needed. The only hairy moments came on wave 10 both times because we were forced into a hacking mission behind the rubble near the spawn. Extraction was also very easy- we just held position until 45 seconds, then launched rockets (if needed) to clear the offices near extraction and then dash in and hold the area.

If I didn't have to work, I would have stayed with that team all night.

I had an awesome experience on the gold challenge level this weekend. It was on the fighterbase map, and we dug in at the lower control room using the consoles for cover. I don't remember what all classes we were, but we played 3 matches and had few to zero deaths and always extracted without issue. There were ammunition pickups near by so we held out pretty much indefinitely. But everyone seemed to know what they were doing and we just killed flashlight after flashlight.

No one was trying to melee everything, or run and gun, we just dug in and waited for extraction, then moved to the extraction point using that fighter as cover. With a 75k reward you get a new Spectre pack every single match if you want.

Saw this today:

Reminded me about what we were talking about. Seems they managed to incorporate their own version of time dilation into the MP somehow. Actually it's not clever or anything, time simply slows down for everyone who's in your line of sight.
