Dear sir, welcome to the internet.

Can you love your tech products and companies to the point of being irrational? Meet the fanboys. Some people--often called "fanboys"--support their favorite tech companies and products in the way that rabid sports fans root for their favorite teams. This column is for the fanboys out there. It's time to realize that criticism can be helpful.

Hah, video included was awesome... Apple fan not liking to see an apple laptop plugged in.

Seriously? wtf?

As far as I can tell, irrational hatred is the order of the day of late.

This all blew up about a 1 sided article about apple email on tablets, and android email on tablets, phones, 3rd party apps. How they all don't work in some form or fashion. So all android devices don't work. He obviously loves his apple devices, which is fine, but because other devices don't work like apple devices (although they work, and work well for millions of others) they are broken... That is a FANBOY.

And this folks is EXACTLY what he was talking about in the article. Good job providing a perfect example.

It does have a slight tinge of Apple bias but I wouldn't outright call the author a fanboy based on what I've read.

I also admit that his other articles that he references do come off a bit as Apple biased. Basically his complaint about Android email is that there's no unified "Android" email app. Oh wait, there is. Google Mail. But no, according to him that doesn't count...?

It would be kinda hard to have a unified email app considering how many Android versions and devices there are. He does address that somewhat in the article.

Basically what it comes down to is Apple's mail program has like these one or two specific features he likes but since it's not in the Gmail app or the "default" mail app, somehow Android has failed.

FWIW I've never had a problem with the default Android mail/Gmail apps.

The Gmail app doesn't count because well it is just Gmail. How exactly does that count when not everyone in the world uses Gmail or just has one email account?

Also every single mail app I've seen on Android phones or tablets has been either meh or complete shit. The one on my Epic won't even delete email messages properly so it requires me to log into my Hotmail account on my computer to do it. I'd rather check email on the piece of shit Samsung Omni I used to use. The email app on my iPod Touch is significantly better in every way.

Comparing tablets I've used an iPad and ASUS Transformers for months and the iPad one is much better. Again like on phones the Gmail app is great, the app for other email is not. I have no regrets linking non-gmail accounts to iOS devices, but I can't say the same about on the Transformer. My mother's Toshiba Thrive seems to have an alright email app or at least it works well enough for her so yay for Toshiba. With Android devices I'd honestly rather just check non-Gmail email accounts on my computer.

There are apps specifically for Hotmail and Yahoo Mail, but those are even worse and of course it's really not a good solution. Google needs a good default email app because relying on manufactures to do it is very stupid and really only causes problems like the article addresses.

Try K9 mail. It's similar to the included mail app on Android, but much, much better. I have 3 accounts I check with it (all IMAP), and it works perfectly, no problems using the phone when I'm on the go and the desktop mail client when I'm at work.

Fair enough. Though I'm not sure which app you're referring to in terms of Android email. I have one that seems to be the "default" (although I am using a custom ROM so I'm not completely sure) and it doesn't really seem that different in functionality from the Gmail app, both of which I think are fine. I have Hotmail linked to the "Email" app and it works fine, deleting and otherwise.

How do you separate the noob fanboy from the pro one who actually knows what he's talking about though?

Dont bother. A better criteria is to separate them based on how rabid and sub-rational they are. Makes it easy to deal with them that way.

Good thing that author doesn't follow the [H]. See up thread for example A and any threads after a review for product X (particularly GPU reviews) for exhibits b-zz.

Guess I am not surprised people people couldn't separate a column about fanboyism from the examples given in said column to exhibit fanboyism. Just like some people cant roll their tounge or taste phenylthiocabamide some people cant employ metacognition.

The proper term for a "Pro Fanboy" is Dick.

If they really knew what they were talking about they wouldn't be a fanboy. They would be an educated consumer discussing the pros and cons of a product regardless of it brand.

Wait. Bashing Apple because he's using the powercord so the battery doesn't deplete? Am I missing something here? He's near an outlet and has his computer plugged in so he's wrong? What's the opposite of a fanboy called? I'm sick of those types.

Asshole? :D

he's a fanboi of mediocrity. everyone knows that Apple products are superior. Lord Jobs said so.

(also, he probably made up his stories by saying all his friends were female. nevertheless, good thing he tried to address this topic.)

This is exactly the BS I hate. Why does everyone always have extreme hatred towards Macs but I have yet to see the same attitude towards Windows (this post was not included in this example, this idiot is a extreme exception.

The mac works well for some, windows for others. I'm tired of seeing stupid posts.

If you don't like Macs, don't like them, its that simple. If you don't like Windows, don't like them. But seriously both OS are in some extreme trouble.

Windows 8 is about to crash hard.
Mountain Lion is about to crash hard.

The "pro" users are the ones who will suffer the worse because they are narrow-minded.

END OF RANT.

There is a lot of Windows hate, too. I don't use a Mac because it doesn't do what I want it to do (or I haven't used it enough to have it do what I want to do). I don't hate Mac's, but I will take a jab at Apple when I get the chance (fuckin' wankers!) just because it's fun and I don't do it in seriousness. I'm a Windows fan, but not a fanboy. Windows SUCKS hard at a lot of things. A webserver running Linux/Apache/etc. will run circles around an IIS install (IMO). Mac's I'm not too sure about - JUST BECAUSE I HAVE LITTLE EXPERIENCE WITH THEM.

And the whole "Apple just works." saying doesn't fit the bill anymore. Maybe in 2001. But, nowadays, any Windows machine "Just works". I'm a gamer, a sys admin, and a hardware guy. I guess I can do sys admin stuff with a Mac, light gaming, but when it comes to hardware, Windows wins (so does Linux, for 2 of the three - WINE doesn't cut it).

Fuck Windows. Fuck Mac. Fuck Linux. I'm a Commodore 64 fanboy. You can all burn in hell.

Lots of pot calling the kettle blank in this thread.

It's generally because apple tends to over-sleep their products calling them magical and whatnot and it not living up to the hype. There is plenty of windows hate as well, mayhaps just not on this forum. Fanbois are usually just people having issues with post purchase rationalization, but don't kid yourself into thinking it's a one-sided situation.

Over-sell, damn that edit button

nice, it only took 9 minutes for someone to pick up the troll bait.

see how emotional this topic gets so quickly? it absolutely doesn't matter what you write, it will result in rage. there aren't just fanbois, but also the paladins of the internet who try to stand above petty controversies by yelling "U SUQ" at fanboys with exactly the same attitude.

Oh, and to back up my post - I'm buying an iPad 2 in mid-April. I'm giving myself a challenge to see if I can learn and actually USE Apple products and run a multiple OS ecosystem at home and work. My wife uses an iPhone and an iPod Touch. I'm going iPad for now. If I can find a sub $500 Macbook I'll probably give that a try, too.

So what if I say my experience with Windows 8 is just as good as Windows 7? ;)

If you can bring yourself around to the 'Apple way' of doing things, you'll probably like it. If you resist, you'll end up having a bad experience with it.
