GK104 = GTX 680 (confirmed), paper launching soon [SA]

Why up? The 680 is not the successor to the 580, regardless of the name. Look at the die size, power consumption and performance and that will become abundandtly clear.

The people only buying the fastest part are a minority. Most people buy cards that have great perf/$ and according to AMDs MSRP, none of the 7000 series is good in that regard. It is clear that at maybe $350 GK104 will outsell the $550 Tahiti XT by orders of magnitude (if supply allows).

Whats the point in releasing the 580 successor a year after the completion releases there top end successor. The big thing here is they have nothing big! Nothing big at all.
They obviously are no where near its finalization.

If you think they will list it at $350.00 I have a bridge to sell you. Please stop the non sense you are giving us in the nvidia camp a bad name.

I returned the 7950 the moment I was confident in a imminent kepler release.

You have your opinion, I have mine. Don't be so arrogant please. I'm not representing anyone but myself.

Where do you get a year? A year would mean January 2013. We know nothing about BigK. After the Fermi debacle it is only natural that Nvidia is more careful with their 500+mm2 beast this round, meaning they wait until they can make it with acceptable yields. AMD set the bar low, so if Nvidia can compete using only GK104, it's not nice for us performance freaks, but it's acceptable for Nvidia from a business point of view. No sense trying to make GK110 when you get 1 good chip out of 20 or so.

What are you guys talking about:
http://semiaccurate.com/2012/02/07/gk110-tapes-out-at-last/

Probably be a couple more months before it releastically would be on shelves. On other hand, due to fact GK104 can compete with AMD's highend, might just want to sell GK110s in Tesla & Quadro boards where they have insane margins... especially with limited production on 28nm. Throw all small GK104 chips to consumers.

Eg they already got someone wanting to buy up to 18,000 GK110s at couple thousand each, why would they want to sell them to us for $500?
http://pressroom.nvidia.com/easyir/...prid=807741&releasejsp=release_157&xhtml=true

Yeah obviously if they can make enough to cover everyone great, but same time they talked about yields on 28nm they also talked about low number of wafers.

I don't know why you would think there isn't going to be a GK110 at some point - obviously not soon, but possibly in 6 months or so. If the mid-range GK104 card can compete with the 7970, there is no real need to push the GK110 out the door before it is ready. They'll take their time with it and then when it is released it will compete with the AMD refresh of the 79xx cards, whatever those would be called. Just because Nvidia might finally be able to compete with a smaller chip (GK104) doesn't mean they aren't making a big one.

Im sick of this new pricing scheme. High end cards used to be introduced in the $400 range with everything else ranging below, and prices would steadily fall after launch. Now it seems prices don't waiver after launch and they release every new product at an even higher price point. Over a year ago a GTX 460 and GTX 560ti could be found around the $100 and $200 (respectively) range fairly easily. A year later and its close to $50 more expensive

I am a gamer. I don't care about what and how much this company make3s or that company makes. I and alot of ppl own a 7970 and it is a very powerful card when oced.

If the competetor comes out with a new line of cards I want it to be alot more powerful. I want to have a reason to upgrade. I don't give a shit if its good enough for other ppl or sales I want it to be ALOT better than what I already have

Please just accept that you are talking about yourself. Most people i do no were not willing to pay 500$ for the HD7970 me included and decided to wait until Nvidia steps up in order to compare and make the best choice and of course save money.
This in the end is what happens with every new round in the GPU department. The vast majority of enthusiasts is waiting and not pulling the trigger immediately.

Calling a mid range card and giving it the *80 GTX moniker is somewhat confusing, just like that time when NVIDIA named the slightly overclocked 8800 GTS the 9800 GTX.

I just want to see the high end card released first.

Even if it's named the GTX 680, priced around $450-500, and Nvidia's best performing card for months? You have a slightly perverse way of seeing things then.

Looks like they are copying ATI's naming convention where 58XX cards were high end cards and when they released their next generation cards, it used 6 "8XX" convention for mid range cards

Whatever works...it would be silly for them to offer something better than a GTX 580 and give it a midrange name at this point. The GK110 parts aren't going to be out for a long while, but they can go any direction with naming the parts.

GTX 780, GTX 685 Ti, etc. Frankly, I think both the GeForce and Radeon brands are a bit long in tooth.

Wether or not Nvidia pulls another gtx400 or wether all the AMD fanboys cry themselves to sleep at night when the numbers come in..

I think we can all agree that its a DAMN SHAME that most of the power of these cards will not be used for another couple of generations when it comes to single monitor gaming. I can see myself holding on to my 7950 for another 4 years without breaking a sweat, which makes me a sad panda.

Ya it is sad. single screen gamers no longer will need to upgrade for years untill the new consoles are out and pushing the graphics up.

The fact that the oced 7970 maxes most games out in eyefinity is also sad. The only game this card can't max is BF3 but it gets close. Upgrading from this just to get more fps does nothing to increase the graphics visually. Hardware seems to have caught up to the games now. I have been so happy to be able to max games with 1 card in 5760*1080. Skyrim maxed with HD textures and all constantly at 60fps is awesome in eyefinity. I was hoping for a oced 680 to be 30-40% better than a 7970 oced but that seems highly unlikely now. Nvidia obviously could not come up with anything greater so they had to tell the public that the gk1o4 680 is the highend card now and to wait for the next round of cards. What I do know is with the massive performance gain in ocing the 7970 the headroom for an increases in performance probably means the 8970 will be a huge increase in performance after all they have all this time to perfect it while Nvidia still struggles

What you should hope for is for performance to be very tight across the two, this way you will reap the benefits of competition at the shopping cart.

Indeed companies should be neck and neck with each other in terms of available products. Yet, if a company manages to bring something to the floor that allows for a far better product like in the case of video cards offering jaw dropping performance then their competitor. I'm all for it. Gives the competitor a kick in the butt to get to the same plateau or fail as a result.

The ball is in Nvidia's court right now as the 7970 is capable of 40-50% increased performance at overclocked speeds over 580's max OCable performance. Their butt has been kicked for 2 months now. Will they fail?

We know that GK104 is going to be somewhere between 7950 and 7970. This is not a recipe for increased competition and lower prices. This is a recipe for more of the same.

I never said Nvidia did I?

Depends on the price. If it ends up being $399, it'll still force down 7950 and possibly 7970 pricing, even if it doesn't beat them. If it is $449 then not so much.

With all of the news coming from TSMC, I don't see how a part between 7950 and 7970 isn't released at $499. Don't see how at all.

That's a good thing for those of us running triple monitors. If single monitor gaming was pushing these cards then we'd be in serious trouble.

Quite a bit off topic, but how are you getting Skyrim to run in Eyefinity? I was super disappointed when I found out it didn't come with native support for surround vision. What's the fix?

Helifax's plugin for Dopefish's WSF new working fix was released a couple of days ago. Helifax;s temp fix was always working

http://widescreengamingforum.com/fo...ulti-monitor-user-interface-fix-disc?page=254

The game is gorgeous maxed in eyefinity. Need a good oced 7970 for it though. I use a alot of mods like the border;less window to make it run butter smooth. This game is also the example why sli and crossfire sucks and single card rules. Playing on Nvdia 3 screen for this game is like a no go. I doubt the new 680 will do 3 screens on a single gpu which is a complete fail. AMD eyefinity ftw

Idoubt it is in there interest to make single gpus for 3 screens. There is nothing worse than being forced to play on one screen when sli is not working right. AI had that prob with 580s and I doubt I ever want to go back to that again. With eyefinity you can just turn off one card and keep going!

The real question is where are all the nvidia fans? For the past couple of months every single post about the Kepler series had them screaming about how great these new cards will kick AMDs ass and how everyone should wait to buy them cause the 7970 is piece of garbage compared to the new cards to come. Are they all crying in their hands knowing that the only way to get the best performance will mean they probably have to buy AMD 7970s?

I sure hope so, else you would have wasted a lot of money.

Some more news.

Few concrete we could bring to the show on the expected performance of the 3D GeForce GTX 680 in experience. The circulating on the Internet rumors that the GTX 680, the latest AMD flagship Radeon HD 7970 by up to 25 per cent wanted to overtake, but none confirmed. Instead, it was claimed the 28-nm debut of Nvidia is Battlefield 3 in about 10 percent faster than inferior to a Radeon HD 7970 and the DirectX 11 benchmark 3DMark 11 even.In April, followed by the GeForce GTX 680 mid-range cards with GK107 graphics chips. On the occasion of the 14th to 17 May at place GPU Technology Conference, Nvidia is planning to introduce a dual-GPU graphics card with two graphics chips GK104. GK110 from large chip that is rumored to contain 2304 shader cores, by summer is nothing to see.

Why do you keep spouting crap like this? Seriously, you've been banned twice for it already, lay off.

Speculation is that a single Kepler card will do 3 screens, but of course there are no facts yet, but soon.

Exactly, who the hell would want either nVidia or AMD to fail  That would mean less competition, and way higher prices and worse performance upgrades.

It is always best when ATI and nVidia re neck and neck going after each other, makes the newest VideoCards from them to be the best and fastest they can possibly make, and keeps the price in check.

Right now if you are an Eyefinity gamer like me, the 7970 is clearly the top dog single GPU, with the 7970 you can finally game across three screens at 5760x1200res and have the gameplay smooth, except for maybe BF3, but it is still doable, just have to lower the in-game settings a bit. But most other games can run just fine on a single 7970 at 5760x1200res. If you are on a single monitor of like 1920x1200res, these new cards are way overkill, only a 30" Display requires one of these.

nVidia needs to come with an Eyefinity solution

Yup fanboys put too much give a crap into a company and don't think with what matters most. Their dollars. Kind of hard to understand their thought process. I want the card I buy to be faster than competitors equally priced and cheaper cards and as close as possible to the next tier. But since EVGA only sells nivida cards that usually what I buy. Customer service is also important.

I was banned for insulting ppl like you

and it is not crap. ppl like you start rumors that the new cards will do 3 screens is false there is no proof

If it is only 10% faster in BF3 it will have to be a monster overclocker like the 7970 in order to beat it

remember its the general oc of these cards that matter how powerful they are

Doesn't AMD have some uber 7900 series drivers up their sleeves to release once the GTX-680 is announced ?

Awesome translation? So is it 10 percent faster than or 10 percent inferior to a 7970?

10 percent faster. That is a common translation artifact, if you actually follow this stuff and read the linked article instead of running to post.

Agree. I have bought both ATI and nVidia cards over the years, both brands have been great. I give two sh!ts which brand is in my system, as long as I know I got the best deal for my dollar. When the 9700Pro was out ATI was king, and when the 8800GTX nVidia was top dog. Usually every couple of years they switch off.

For me I prefer AMD right now just for their Eyefinity, I would like to see nVidia come up with a card that can handle triple screen gaming easily on a single card. I have three Dell 2709W monitors, and AMD's card do it best for me. But I would be totally open to nVidia if they allow it ? Maybe the GTX-680 will do some type of Eyefinity ?

Thanks for the link. So what it sounds like is GK104 is going to end up being the "high-end" part and GK110 is going to be like the "ultra high end" or something, down the line.

Also, the "speed boost" thing sounds kinda like what video cards already do, which is clock down when not loaded...? What makes this special?

I like to see that in BF3 it's doing better, I don't give a crap about 3DMark (nor do most people here I'm guessing).

Well, if it's on par with 7970 it's high end, right? :D I sure hope it comes in and fuels a price war... we all win. The speed boost sounds gimmicky. Yeah, 3DMark is only good for making sure you don't have a major problem with a setup, or doing before and after ugrade baselines.

I didn't necessarily mean for you to go off on an AMD fan boy rant. I'll go out on a pretty sturdy limb and guess that the 600's will do surround vision on one card without issue. And if they can't, I couldn't care less. I will buy at least two Kepler cards, and maybe eventually a third down the road. Yea, AMD may be able to run Eyefinity on one card, but I promise you it's not good enough. I would never rely on one card to pump the kind of resolutions we're talking. It won't be fast enough. In today's nVidia terms, I would consider 3GB 580's in tri sli sufficient to run any game smooth at 5760x1080. Is your single 7970 faster than that? Didn't think so. Point being one card won't be enough anyways, so who cares if it can do it?

Just as you are obviously a huge AMD fan boy, I am an nVidia fan boy. AMD XXXX would have to be double the GTX XXX for me to even consider jumping out of Camp Green. So we're here, we just probably don't need to put down the other company to feel better about the one we support.

As far as this not being logical thinking and me not thinking with my dollar, it's a bit of an exaggeration, but in reality nVidia would have to roll out a pretty epic fail for me to switch. The drivers have always worked great for me and I've heard contrary about AMD's drivers, and the SLI support for the most part is very good which I've also heard contrary about AMD's crossfire. You mention being able to run Eyefinity on one card as a plus because sometimes you have to disable Crossfire and you can keep going. Well, I can honestly say I've never had to disable SLI, so I guess I keep going too. Also, as another poster mentioned, EVGA, the cards and the company, has just been too awesome to me over the years, and they don't sell Camp Red.

I don't dislike AMD at all nor will you find me bashing on them very often (unless someone wants to start bashing the companies I support), I just prefer Camp Green. We need both companies and competition for obvious reasons. If anything I wish AMD 7970 was better so nVidia had to roll out GK110 right away :D
