I've been using OpenOffice for a while but just reformatted my PC and wondered if LibreOffice or a different office suite was any better? I've personally never had any qualms with OpenOffice but my I put it on my Father In Law's machine and it continuously reverts the save type from .doc to .odf which he hates.

Any other/better options?

Google Docs comes to mind, but it's definitely not as feature-rich as Open Office or MS Office.

I went with Libre, feels VERY similar to OpenOffice (which I suppose is a good thing for me), feels sleeker though.

Thanks for the input!

Huh. I knew Libre forked off of Open, but have still been using Open on some rigs. Maybe I'll try Libre for a while.

Kingsoft Office Suite hands down.

Dang, now I have another to check out. ;)

I just downloaded this and am trying it now.
What I've seen of that suite before is that the free version prompts you to upgrade and there are ad's, etc.

What's the report on it?

*edit* OK, I see what I was remembering. It's the prompt for changing UI to the ribbon, you have to upgrade for that.

Seconded. KOS is the best free office suite I've used(I've used LibreOffice and OpenOffice). Documents(word, excel, ppt) open quickly, save quickly and are easy to manage.

We got one specific build of the free versions where the guys at Kingsoft forgot to disable the ribbon as in Office 2007 :D

KOS reminds me of Office 2003 (that's not a bad thing). I haven't tried opening .docx files in it yet though.

That looks really great; how's the compatibility with MS Office files?

Of all the OO derivatives, my preference is Lotus Symphony > Libre > OO; mainly because Symphony tends to render most MS Office files better than the others, at least for me.

Symphony isn't going to last much longer though, last I read they were donating their code to OO, and probably won't have new releases.

But yes, I can easily do without an installed office suite because of Google Docs or Skydrive
