Screen resizes when playing a video

I can't figure how to fix this problem. I have my computer hooked up to my sony tv and the resolution is set correctly, but whenever I play a video the resolution changes. My taskbar and the edges of the video are outside of the screen. When I close the video, the resolution goes back to normal. Any idea what's going on here?

I'm running an Nvidia 560 TI card, using a dvi to hdmi converter and the hdmi cable connects to my sony tv. On the latest firmware also.

youtube videos are causing the screen to resize without you switching to full-screen mode, or is this only occurring when switching to full screen?

No, I'm not switching to full screen. It changes when I press play and my desktop edges and taskbar are not within the frame of the screen. And when I do full screen the video, the edges of the video are cut off.

Unfortunately we will have to wait for someone else to weigh in on this one, i can't think of what would cause the issue you describe. It is an interesting issue and i would like to hear how you solve it when you figure it out.

when you say your tv is "normal" when not viewing video, what does that mean? make sure you are running the tv in the native PC resolution. if you do not then your screen will be all screwy. my old sony lcd had a weird pc resolution. either that or the videocard is auto-resizing the picture ( i cant remember the techinical term for it) there is a setting for that in the video resolution area.

The tv is set to it's native resolution 1920x1080. When I play a video, the resolution changes and when I close the video, it goes back to it's native resolution. (1920x1080)

Does the TV have different input modes and have you selected the correct one? What connection are you using? Sorry, I just read you're using HDMI.

This was how I had it connected with my other computer setup. My older setup had an ATI video card. Connected to the tv the exact same way and I never encountered this problem.

i have the GeForce GTX 550 TI and the same exact problem. This is the most frustrating thing ever - but you're not alone!

Edit: For what it's worth, I'm using a new ibuypower hooked to a sony bravia tv via hdmi with windows 7 64 bit. The screen will flash to black for a moment (during which I can still clearly hear all audio). Then the entire screen comes back, but the display overscans.

Edit2: check this out: http://bluxte.net/musings/2009/01/11/removing-hdmi-overscan-sony-hdtv I think it has to do with the fact that we're both using sony TVs. Apparently they have an issue with overscan. This article doesn't quite work for me - my menus are set up differently, but I think there's going to be an option in the tv's settings to turn it off! :)

We fixed it!!!

So: the overscan is fixed in the settings of the bravia tv itself. In order for the full pixel mode to show up at all we had to adjust the tv settings *while it was playing a video*. We went into windows media player and had a vid play on repeat. It gave me time to dig through the menus and set the picture mode to 'custom'. Otherwise it only allowed me to switch between text and video.

BUT the screen was still flashing to black anytime a vid started or stopped. So we went into the NVidia Control Panel, and under display go to 'adjust desktop color settings'. Under '3. Apply the following enhancements", change the digital color format to YCbCr444'.

That should fix everything - huzzah! :)

It MIGHT lower the screen refresh rate down to ~23Hz. You can just bump that puppy back up though and it'll keep your screen fab-u-lous :)
