Official: Apple iPad 3 event slated for March 7th in San Francisco
iPad-3-Event.png

Yes, it's finally, really happened. We just received our invite for Apple's next big event — almost certainly where the announcement of the iPad 3 (or iPad HD, or some other name no one has guessed yet) will take place. The event is being held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 10AM PST, on Wednesday, March 7th, and the Verge team will be there covering the news live as it happens. Until then, let your imagination run wild about the next iteration of the world's most popular tablet!

As you can see in the image above, that's no regular iPad display. It appears to be a higher resolution than the iPad or iPad 2. Also, the casing of the product pictured looks darker than current iPad models. It's hard to say if that's a trick of lighting or not.

What do you, guys think? Going buy one? :)

Can't wait :) Hopefully stores will have them in stock. When the 2 launched, I had to wait like 3 months before I could get one locally

Silly question. Of course we are going to buy one ;) Now waiting to the official price.

I dont think its gonna be more expesive.
Apple Always have the same prices for old & new ones. iPad 2 was from 499$, iPad 3 will be from 499$. :)

That image was in the invite? I guess they really are opening up a bit, that's sort of obvious. I don't have one with me at the moment but that even looks like a sharper image (more pixels), hard to tell.

lol thats the first thing I thought of. It's MUCH sharper than the iPad 1/2

That's the apple HDTV they are unveiling lol

I have a gen 1 iPad. I kind of wanted to tought it out until Windows 8 tablets come out, but I am too invested in the damn app store at this point and that iPad 3 screen is going to be sick.

If I was Microsoft, I would give everyone who buys a Win 8 tablet some sort of windows store incentive coupon to buy back all the apps you are missing.

Did you guys notice no home button? Could be on it's side... could be that there's no home button!

Any takers on when they will start selling it?

My bet is March 7th. Yep. Immediate availability. Kinda screw over all the scalpers who were planning on camping out a week in advance, etc.

I doubt it, there would be rumors of boxes showing up in stores with manager only and do not open till XX date.

Pretty excited. And yes the lack of a home button is quite interesting.

That lack of a homebutton means 1 of 2 things. There won't be one. Or it's in landscape mode. :)

Edit: A little less dickish, I should say that I'll be in for one. White 32GB if it's still at $599 (which I imagine it will be). I've already promised my 16GB 3G iPad 2 to a friend, definitely excited!

I'm pretty excited for this release. Most likely a day 1 purchase/pre-order for me. (Looking at the 32GB+3G)

Doubt it...

There are leak price already, and its higher price tag while iPad 2 still selling...

Also, they already have a history bumping the price on mac mini from 500 to 600..

A single price bump in their computer sales isn't necessarily indicative of a price bump in their portable consumer electronic devices. Considering that some retailers are already slashing prices on the iPad 2, I wouldn't be surprised if there was an iPad 2 price cut and the 3 sold at the same price.

I think the absolute most that Apple could justify bumping their price up by, when considering both their competition from Google and the soon to be had competition from Microsoft, is $50. There is absolutely no way they're going to justify a $929 iPad when the model before it had the same storge and capabilities but just a different screen (especially if, as you say, they're going to sell them side by side).

The more likely course, if Apple does increase the price, is that they'll increase the base storage. i.e. they'll eliminate the 16gb model and add a 128gb model at the high end, keeping the existing cost per storage prices (32GB will be $599+$130 for 3G, $100 increments from there). There's no way they could source the parts for the MBA 128gb and retail it at 1199 and not get a 128gb iPad 3 3G at $929. Especially considering the volume of iPad's sold.

Really any other set up would at least hurt a lot of people looking to upgrade from 2 to 3, I know that I would no longer consider it.

Or it is upside down with a moved camera. Or it is not the real new iPad.

There is no spoon.

In all honestly, I think the no home button is probably spot on. I wouldn't be surprised if the bezel is now touch sensitive in certain parts or if it becomes entirely software based for most buttons., consdering the And touch part of the invitation. Sliding your finger on the right bezel for volume would be pretty nifty.

nah 99% sure its on its side. i doubt they have a touch bezel, although i must admit i do like that idea if they could manage it in such a way that you dont accidentally give it touch commands while holding it.

I will definately be interested to see what all the "hooplah" is about, even though I still have yet to take the iPad plunge (just have the iPhones). I am curious if they will have an updated iOS for the new tablet, given its potential for amnenities.

Or it's a rendering...

I dont get the exciment... I mean it looks the same(except maybe for home button),hardware will be better but who cares(its not like pcs, games run good on ipad 2 also),and the better resolution(really?who cares ,its not like u use it as a pc desktop where u need to fit more things, ipad 2 is already a great screen). I could see people who dont have an ipad geting excited, but if u already have an ipad2?meh :)

Heh, I sold my iPad 1 months ago, and the resolution is a huge bonus. I love my 2560x1440, and getting a similar resolution on a smaller tablet? The screen is going to be so crisp and clear.

Do u think the ipad 2 screen is not crisp and clear?i saw it and its damn nice. I agree this will be sweet, just dont get the exciment.... Maybe i"m just not into tablets that much.

Same thing was said for iPad to iPad 2. The reason games run fine on it now is for exactly the reason you've stated. They're not PC's. They aren't constantly evolving like the PC world, so the apps are written with the idea that what is current is what should run it.

Once the new one comes out, with more powerful hardware, it will be the standard and the iPad 2 will probably start to lag behind. Much like the iPad 1 did when the iPad 2 came out.

The iPad 2's display is high-quality, but the resolution isn't outstanding. If you own an iPhone 4 or some other similar high-DPI phone, you understand the issue.

From where I hold my iPad in my lap, I can see pixelation when viewing a full sized web page. This upgrade will be mostly appreciated by those who own or have extensively used an iPad or iPad 2

Users new to the iPad can easily appreciate it, as well. Besides phones, where else would most people have experienced a high-DPI display?

Between the facts that it's job bonus time and I have yet to get my tax return...

<shutupandtakemymoneyday1.gif>

That said, Macrumors says there's going to be an 8gb iPad2 offering, then 2 iPad3 flavors, 16gb and 32gb... Hopefully that's not true, and there is a 64gb. Fortunately there are 3 leaked model numbers that would indicate there is a 64gb. I'm thinking A5X processor for updated iPad 2, A6 for iPad3.

yeah, If I had to guess, you're probably correct.

The new one is probably getting the quad core and the older one and new ATV are probably getting the A5X

IIRC the base price of the iPod Touch went up ~$30 when it first got a Retina display.

Also Foxcon wages have been increased.

Put those together and there is a fair chance of a price increase.

Mac Mini went up from $599 to $699 one year. It's possible that prices will go up.
