Apple vs. Facebook: Why Users Are The Losers

It is a battle of the ages, Apple versus Facebo...wait, did you just call us losers? ;)

Apple's distaste for Facebook became apparent with last week's preview release to developers of Mountain Lion, the newest version of Apple's OS for computers. The OS includes a slew of new apps (Game Center, Reminders, Notes) and new features (Gatekeeper, Notification Center). What it doesn't include is Facebook integration--a baked-in connection to Facebook that would make it easier for Apple users to share more on the world's largest social network.

Why would you want Facebook integrated into your operating system???? Your phone is one thing, and I don't even really want it integrated into that!

yeah, I completely agree with you on both points. Visiting a webpage (or using an app) is one thing. I'm praying that MS doesn't do something stupid and add social networking integration into windows 8.

Seeing as Facebook could go the way of MySpace, I don't think I'd want it integrated into an OS either...

My distaste for all things Apple is fairly well known. But even I agree with them on this.
Facebook is a disease and a privacy nightmare. I'd be damned if I actually integrated it into an OS.

Fuck
That
Noise

How the hell does Apple get away with biased integrated crap like this but MS can't even give the user something useful like a virus scanner?

I think Facebook integration is silly. I think Twitter integration is just as silly, if not worse. Apple is still worth avoiding just for the twitter integration.

I hate Facebook and I hate Apple.

I still have a Facebook account, because there are so many moronic people who use it as their only way to communicate/send party invites/etc. I also have it because now Spotify requires you to, and if I want to play scrabble with my wife on my phone? Oh wait, I need Facebook for that to work.

I am a reluctant Facebook user. I wish the damned site would just die. Cant Anonymous turn their efforts against Facebook instead?

And Apple, is the evil fucking empire of lies, deceit, ripoffs and Chinese slave labor. They can't die soon enough either.

I agree it's stupid, but Apple integrated Twitter.
Of course, it is more logical for Apple — Twitter is for hipsters, and hipsters usually have Macs.

Now, if there's something I agree with, it's that both Apple and Facebook are for losers!

Because Facebook and Twitter won't sue them and might actually pay them to have the support. They don't make money off of people buying the software somewhere else. Short version: Apples vs oranges.

Thank you very much miss south carolina... Tell em why you mad son.

It's still anti-competitive..Twitter now has an advantage over facebook on OSX just as MS would have an advantage for one of their software products being pre-installed in a default Windows install. I don't want anything pre-installed, but this just seems to be the same exact crap MS always gets blasted for.

I will never use a system that has a character limit.

twitter is 'okay', but most 'regular' people really shouldn't have much of a use for it (and honestly, it's the reason why I think it has the most staying power). I use it on my phone almost like an RSS reader. I can stay up to date with whatever interests me, in realtime, instead of waiting for new/blogs/etc to post it.

For example, because of twitter, I got news about the latest (for example) jailbreak for iOS5 directly from the developers. The regular blog that I usually go to for that kind of info didn't post it for a few hours. It was the difference between getting it done early and waiting for Apples servers to die down a few days later from the rush of people jailbreaking their phones.

Same with MineCraft. When Jeb releases a new .jar, you know about it instantly instead of reading about it a few days later on RPS.

It's a stupid way for people that actually know each other to communicate IMO, but it's great for staying up to date with whatever you're into.

You must have missread the article, it said they
put facebook integration into Mountain Lion.

Windows 7 has Security Essentials pre-installed doesn't it, never bothered checking a fresh install, but I know it's on the laptop even though I have Norton (personally I like having it there for the occasional scan).

Agreed. It's all bloatware.

One of the beautiful things about computers is how they are so customizable. If you like something, you install it, if you son't use something, you remove it and don't waste space/desktop real estate/ CPU cycles / RAM on it.

Pre-installed crap is just another way for the OS maker to encroach on my user experience, and bother me...

I usually don't buy pre-made computers, but when I have to (like with laptops) the first thing I do, is a clean install of windows to get rid of all the included bloated software crap.

Why would you want to integrate something that could disappear in a year when the next new thing comes out? I think social networking is a good thing, but the way it is being used leaves a lot to be desired.

The same could be said about texting on phones or using smartphones in general for it. Some people bemoan the disappearance of letter writing.

I also have it because now Spotify requires you to, and if I want to play scrabble with my wife on my phone? Oh wait, I need Facebook for that to work.
Because there are absolutely no alternatives out there...

There must always be a Lich King.

Oops, I think you left out about 15 other companies in that exhaustive list of yours. But don't let me get in the way of your misplaced rage.

You might have missed the part about twitter being put in there instead, it was all the way down in the fourth paragraph tho so that's understandable.

No. See this post from yesterday: http://hardocp.com/news/2012/02/21/win_8_security_bundle_antitrust_magnet

The number of people in 1 page of this thread that didn't read and just raged against apple is absolutely hysterical.

I agree with those that read the article in this is a smart move by apple not baking something like this into the OS. The fact that this is an article on cnet is just sad.

Bloatware is bloatware, weather you use it or not. I prefer starting from minimum OS and build up applications from there.

Preparing laptops for first use are the biggest pain that way.

Apple probably have their own motives for doing this, but on this one point I agree.

Still utterly dispise using apple products though.

Nope, Win7 doesn't come pre-loaded with MSE. I believe (by default) it has windows defender enabled by default (a very watered down version of MSE).

Actually the only reason they didn't was because they are basically still butt-hurt over the fact that HP beat then to the punch on the FB tablet app in early 2011, it's in the article. You can bet that if Apple and FB were on better terms with each other then it would have been integrated in just like Twitter is.

Tell us how your really feel :)

I don't have a facebook page, and I've been getting more iritated at all the marketing and other programs that assume everyone does. Companies have actually lost my business because thier deal was only available on Facebook.

same here. Spottify is one such service that lost my business because of their login sharing with facebook.

I also recall a few apps from the appstore that I downloaded, found out I needed facebook, deleted said app and gave it a 1 star rating.

Even though a lot of people use facebook, not everyone is willing to put all their eggs in one basket, so to speak. If your FB account gets hacked, so does everything else.

This entire thread deserves one gigantic "u mad?"

Maybe you guys should think about unplugging for a bit if people using facebook affects you that much. You're on a hardware forum, you're not better than anyone else. Relax a bit. lol

Great idea in theory. Not so great idea when you discover the clean install of windows didn't include 20 proprietary drivers for stupid laptop features like the webcam, fingerprint scanner, touchpad features, power save features, hard drive accelerometer lock ect... The last laptop I had it was a toss up as to whether it would be faster trying to clean the bloated base install, or hunt down the drivers to make the laptop fully functional again.

Dell has organized the webpage very well lately so you can quickly download all the drivers you need.

They also have a new service which I haven't yet used, where you go to their service webpage with the machine you need to install drivers for, enter your express service tag number, and an Active X control launches, that installs all the appropriate drivers for your machine. I haven't tested it yet, so I don't know how well it works though, but it seems like a neat idea (if you can trust it)

Yes, it is still a pain, but the problem with all the bloatware is that even after you uninstall it, it still leaves crap behind.

I work in IT at a company that uses all Dell's. Trust me , the way you obtain drivers from them is crap. The service code is a glorified "this is the model i have" number. It will still give you 3 options for video card drivers.

Pretty sure vBulletin has a character limit too.

I ran into this problem with my first laptop (ASUS) and just uninstalled all the programs I didn't want. Then I ran registry cleaner and then a registry defragger. Works like a charm. May take a little more time but the risk of missing a driver is mitigated.

Same here. I am a Client Support Technician at work and their web site has much to be desired.

While the website could be improved, it still isn't bad. It remains overwhelmingly superior to trying to clean the bloat out. Plus if you generally order the same machines, it is a single download and mass deploy. Even if not, generally it doesn't take more then a few seconds to pick the appropriate driver for your hardware.

That said, for those who hate downloading drivers, Revo uninstaller comes as close to cleaning absolutely all traces of bloatware off as you can get.

My SOP however is a clean install the moment a machine comes out of the box. Frankly Win 7 makes it so stupidly easy there is little reason not too. It natively handles nearly everything except some of the fingerprint scanners and such and there is only 1 download for those so it isn't difficult at all. I think some people just want something to bitch about.
