A BrailleTouch App that will enable the visually impaired to join in the Twitter revolution has been developed by researchers at Georgia Tech. The device will enable blind or vision impaired users to send text messages using six buttons representing the six-dot Braille code.

Did you even watch the video? As long as someone instructs them on the basic functions of the app, I'm sure a blind person could easily text with it. Now, what about reading a text? Does it spell out each word, letter by letter?

Siri.

"Is Siri accessible to blind and visually impaired users?

Yes. VoiceOver, the screen reader built into iOS, can speak any text that’s displayed in responses from Siri. You can navigate through the responses and have each one read to you. This includes the days of a weather forecast, the body of an email, the details of an answer from Wolfram|Alpha, and more."

While Siri is good for reading out what's already in the iPhone, Siri is not perfect for voice recognition input. BrailleTouch could be one way to address some of the concerns raised by blind people about Siri:

You must remember that from the very beginning in System 1.0, Apple was way, way out in front of everyone else for being accessible to the blind.

Anyone remember the braile screen output for the blind guy in the movie Sneakers? I thought that idea was pretty ingenious. Is there anything like that in existence or was it something made up for the movie?

I guess Apple are running out of clueless sheep to buy their products. Marketing to blind people seems like a logical progression.

Totally, there are braille printers and braille "displays" that are basically a few rows of display area where it updates text as it appears on the "screen" for the user to read.

Screen reading software (text to speech) and voice recognition software for text to speech input. The voice recog on Android phones is pretty good (haven't tried Siri on iphone), though I'm not sure on the state of mobile screen readers I'm sure they are out there.

Finally! Sexting blind girls FTW!

Seriously, everything that enables more people to use technology is a good thing.
