Sprint Customers: Did your rates recently change?

BTW, this IS a material change to your contract if you're getting a discount. If you're looking to leave Sprint, this will let you out ETF free.

Thanks. Mine changed as well. My contract is up in August, but I think I just might switch now with this info.

Question though. I want to port my number. Would I just go to Verizon and have them port the number before talking with Sprint to cancel my contract?

is this bullshit? yes

is it totally unwarranted? maybe not if this helps them increase revenue to help continue with their lte buildout and improving their current 3g network.

I still have a few days left on my current cycle so I dont know the figure it'll increase my bill yet, but if its no more than 5 bucks or so, oh well. They are still the cheapest network and service has been fairly decent for me. Now if this would increase them to the price of Verizon, Americas Most Expensive Network, I might think about using this to get out of my contract and sell our current phones to cover the cost of moving to verizon.

Anyone know if the other carriers do the same? (ie discount only the main line and not everything else?) If thats the case, then sprint is only getting in line with the other two.

Their pricing might be the lowest, but when I have full bars and it takes several minutes for a youtube video to start playing I get pissed. Their data network sucks ass. My 4G, if and when I do get 1 bar, maxes out at 4mbps. My 3G gets about 700kbps. My friends Verizon 3G hits 3mbps and his 4G gets a solid 8-10mbps.

You get what you pay for. Shitty data speeds and clogged networks.

I'm switching. The extra ~$20 I pay per month will be worth it. Besides, I get a 20% discount with Verizon instead of the 18% i get with Sprint. So...it might equal out in the end.

No, you need to call Sprint and cancel your lines so they can mark the account free of ETFs. Let them know you will be porting your numbers and they will set it all up for you so you don't have problems.

This makes me consider Verizon even more:

Lets go down memory lane and do some quick math.
2 years ago a family of 4 with 4 HTC hero's and a 20% Corp discount would pay:
$130+20+20-20%(34)=$136+Taxes and fees

Since a month before the EVO was released Sprint has changed.
1) $10 for premium data on "Premium" phones.
2) No employee discounts for the additional lines (Plan is now $144).
3) Annual upgrades = gone.
4) $10 premium data on all 3G phones. (Plan is now $184, when you change phones)
5) Some maintenance Fees increased to $2.
6) Your base plan is now split from $130 to $110+$20.
Plan is now $188+taxes and fees

Mine is the same as last months bill,
sprint-bill.jpg

I was a very happy sprint customer for years, they decided to pass some fees on to their customers so i used that as a breach of contract (only because my wife hated her samsung instinct and i didnt want to buy a new phone)

Once i called to cancel the service they didnt fight me at all and even offered a 20% discount on my entire bill. very tempting, but we had already got new android phones with a different carrier.

Yes, you are on SERO, Zepher. Oh well for those of us who don't.

They offered early upgrade for 45$ or release from contract. First two Rep's were stonewalling until I started reading the T&C.

Yeah I'm using this to get out of Sprint to head to AT&T for the new Windows Phone. The first person I called told me it was impossible, but later I got a voicemail from Sprint apologizing for the rep being wrong.

It only applies to those with a family talk plan with a discount. You might be able to get out of it if you have no discount, read the slickdeals thread for all the info.

Just talked to a really pleasant woman in account relations or something. They let me out of my contact no questions asked. Amazon wireless has some sweet ass prices on Verizon phones right now. Galaxy Nexus here I come!

EDIT: Just for clarification, I am on a family plan, and receiving a military discount. Sprint coverage blows on Ft. Drum, and I've been waiting for a way out. Thanks a ton, OP!

EDIT2: Done and done. Paid $140 out the door for a Galaxy Nexus and a Droid Bionic from Amazon. No activation fees, no ETF from Sprint. My phones should fetch about $350 at XDA. I'm going to make money, get better phones, and better service. WOOT!

i would love to switch to verizon but 89voice+30sms+60 data just doesnt fly with me.

my sprint bill went up then down 146 to 139 this month. Im still looking into whats different.

We moved to an area that isnt even on sprints coverage map and i have no bars in the house without the airvana. Ill just pay the 3 bucks more its going to be once the line switches and hope US Cell gets the nexus before june.

Just an update..

Yesterday, I spoke to Retentions. They gave me a choice, either upgrade early @ 45$ fee when I upgrade or release from contract. I said, okay 45$ isn't too bad. I went to the Sprint Store and they said, "There is an additional 36$ fee." So they wanted me to pay $45, $36, plus cost of phone.

No way. Called them back and had them credit me those costs (both 45 + 36) or I was moving on. So they did. Now I'll take advantage of the 50$ off from Best Buy (gift card towards phone purchase) and pick up the phone. I'll look into selling one of my EVOs and my girlfriend will do the same come June/July if she ends up not liking it. She has an EVO too, it just has some quirks.

ProTip: Sprint won't charge you an activation fee if you buy a used phone. Dunno which handset you wanted, but many of the new-ish ones can be found on Craigslist.

I understand that. I am looking at the iPhone 4S. So the new-ish ones on CL in my area are a little on the high side. Trust me, I considered it. I even considered moving off Sprint's network entirely. But overall I dig the service. It's the customer support that made me do almost a 180 and ask for those kickbacks. And I deal with them maybe once a year. So *shrug*

I was hesitant due to the cost of Verizon as well, but it's really not that bad. On Sprint I had 1500 minutes, unlimited texting and data. Two lines for this was $150. There was tax, but then a 15% discount for being military. The two evened out, my bill was $149 every month. On Verizon I went for a 700 minute, unlimited texting plan that was $100 a month, plus $30 per line for the 2GB data plan (which is doubled to 4GB in this months promotion), so $160 a month. Verizon has the same 15% discount, so that should again wash with the fees. $10 a month more isn't a significant amount.

I get less minutes, but I used 136 minutes on both lines last month, don't care. I lose my unlimited data, but I also used less than 1GB of data last month on both lines. I don't see myself surpassing 4GB of data, so I don't care that it's capped. Verizon has full 3G coverage where I am, and they are testing 4G here, which they say should go live by summer. Sprint doesn't even have full 3G coverage here. I spend more time roaming @ 1X data than I do on 3G. It's super lame.

+1. This is why I left Sprint. It's great that they're $15 cheaper every month, and it's great that I get unlimited data and can call any mobile phone and not use minutes. It's not great that data speeds are so slow that doing anything takes FOREVER and out of everyone I'm out with I'm always the one with the slowest phone even though I have a much more advanced and faster device. Also, realistically, the only person I use a significant amount of minutes talking to is my girlfriend, and she's on my plan, so that's a moot point.

To me, you get what you pay for. I won't go over my data cap, I use WiFi at work and home, so that's a non-issue, but knowing that my phone is going to work when I need it to is worth the extra $15-20 a month.

I use 100 voice, 100 sms, 1.5gb data a month. My wife because she uses it for work and is the boss uses 1100voice, 1000sms, 300megs data a month every month.

Im in the boondocks with no 4g happening ever, The high school where my wife is mostly has no signal from verizon or sprint, just us cellular.

If i could go to a 700min plan and get verizon for 149 i would, she gets 18% for being in the school district but she uses too many minutes to have to watch it every month.

I agree with pretty much everything you guys said. But I'll caution you that with Sprint you weren't paying for ANY minutes that called to ANY cell phone. Verizon doesn't do that, just with their own network. So expect your "billed" minute usage to go up. AT&T has it as an option at least with their family messaging add-on.

February has less days, maybe that is why?

from my understanding, all activations are now charged and cant be waived.

I am aware of this, but still not worried. Before moving to sprint, I had 700 minutes on a T-Mobile plan, and never crossed that. Verizon doesn't charge nights and weekends, correct?

i pay $40 +10 for unlimited data for an evo 4g on sprint

haven't noticed any increase in my bill

It only applies to people with family plans who receive a discount. Discounts are now only applied to line 1 instead of all lines. For example, I get a 15% military discount. They used to calculate that 15% off of $150, my total bill. Now they are calculating 15% off of just Line 1, which is $110. It's only a few dollars, but that's irrelevant. They keep sneaking this shit in there to slowly raise rates. Sprint is a shitty network that people only like because it's the cheapest. If they are going to keep bumping their rates until they are in line with other carriers, then there is no reason to use them.

That's exactly what I told the girl in retentions too. I said I wasn't angry at Sprint, and was aware the dollar amount is very low, but I did not feel Sprint provided good enough service to warrant paying anything more on my bill. She understood and let me out of my contract, ETF fee, without so much as an argument.

i got charged 7 bucks when i switched the wife to an EVO 4g from her other phone. It was a premium data charge on top of the now 10bucks a month for data she wasnt paying with old phone. So thats the 146-139 difference. Kinda odd but ok whatever.

yea true i was thinking of getting T-mobile because they have HSPA+ and its only $49 a month with 5gb of data

I had T-Mobile and HSPA+ was pretty nice. Honestly, I really liked T-Mo. I had them for 9 years. I switched to Sprint last summer because I was moving to an area where T-Mo did not even have 3G coverage, so I moved to Sprint. I should have waited, but Sprint was doing their promotion where they would pay your ETF if you port your numbers, and that was the only way I could afford to switch carriers. Once I actually got here, I found out that Sprint's coverage is a joke here. It's spotty and slow as shit, half the time I cannot use my phone when I need it. Verizon is the only carrier with towers on post, which were supposedly commissioned by the army. It sucks that I have to give up my unlimited data and pay more in the process, but I can't freakin' use it anyway.
