How do you guys and girls running this as a Win 7 OS drive prevent the WinSXS folder from quickly getting out of control as you install games and apps?

I bought one of these in November for $30 for my pfsense router, and it is doing fine so far. This was a good deal! I would of bought another for backup with the prices of HDD so high.

The WinSXS folder isn't what it says it uses. One can have a 40GB OS drive with 20GB of free space, and, say, 30GB "used" in just "WinSXS". WinSXS is links and Windows doesn't calculate it as one may expect.

Yeah, I guess I just missed out on this. Would be a great replacement for the CF card I have running my router right now.

Tracking for mine shows they are in Wisconsin, should be here tomorrow. Will play with them this weekend I hope.

I should have mine tomorrow or Friday. The seller is in Wisconsin per the tracking. I am in MN. Win!

LOL, someone on ebay bought a couple of them, than put them right back on ebay and doubled the price. HAHA.

mine came today. it has a copy of windows installed on it. ran hdtune to test it and all is good. decided just to sell it instead of keeping it.

I get out of work in 2 hours, my 4 are waiting at home. What are the speeds on yours?

I have no idea why I bought these...lol. For some reason I thought 16gb was good for something...

Mine are here today. I bought 4 and not sure why lol. I will use 2 for sure.

I just realized there's a bunch of personal shit on these drives. One of them contained a kid using a Flip camera to record his class and then talking with a teacher. Then a few pictures of a lecture or something.

*Edit* Seems the same video/pictures is on all the drives but then some drives have different user names. I think these came from school laptops or something and they were all linked on one workstation with RDPs across all the drives connecting to different PCs with the same identifiers.

USB3 != full speed due to the design of the USB3 architecture

Yeah I am installing W7 on it now to see what I can get out of it. Interesting info on these drives though, alot of different student profiles on them. Light as a feather too.

Not worth it unless you get like 4 of these in RAID IMO. For the price your better off getting a real 64GB SSD. These things are pretty much good for a small HTPC running Linux/XBMC/Ubuntu or squeezing a tiny W7 install on there for shits and giggles.

Mine just arrived, they are really light and didn't ship in antistatic!

I am going to put them in my desktop tonight and do some benchmarks and reviews.

Here's the status and performance on mine (~13.8GB free)

Haven't secure erased it yet. Has a bunch of miscellaneous files stored on it. Very surprised no one didn't even attempt to zero it out.

Drives are in!

Results are decent for $50. Seeing around 250 MB/s copying over a 5 GB vmdk. The 3 drives are in RAID 0 with a 128kb stripe. I formatted mine right off the bat so I can't say if anything interesting was on my drives.

My 2 came in a nice cheap bubble rap envelope and no static. I will play with them later this weekend.

Perfect for my htpc. Was using an old PATA drive. Imaged it over to the ssd. Mediabrowser menus/images are much snappier.

A few questions.

Any easy way to mount these in a desktop 3.5" bay? Adapter brackets seem more than I want to spend on these drives.

Also, what's involved in wiping a SSD? Same as a traditional drive? Or only need to write once or twice?

I got some while ago on Newegg some plastic 3.5" kits that let you put two 2.5" SSDs into one 3.5" bay. Was like $5 or something like that. Nothing fancy but it worked just fine.

If anyone has purchased more than they think they will use, I'd be interested to take one or two off someone's hands.

Feel free to send me a PM.

Thanks,
Dave
